Dungeon Quest is an action roleplaying game, or ARPG in short, by the developer Shiny Box. They are mostly new at the mobile games market, with only one other game released so far, titled Space Wars 3D.
Dungeon Quest has a rating of 4.5/5 stars on the Google Play Store, while also having a 4.5/5 stars rating on its most downloaded version on the Apple App Store. The game promises no paywalls and content limitations, but countless randomized dungeons and loot to be found. We shall see how well it manages these features and how addicting it is!
If you were unfamiliar with ARPGs, they are generally heavily action based, top down RPGs, with some kind of background story sprinkled on top. It’s not the most popular genre on the mobiles gaming market, but Dungeon Quest nonetheless tries its best to show that these kind of games can be successful on any platform.

The game starts you off in the character selection screen, where you have three different classes to choose your character from: Wizard, Warrior and Rogue. At first you only have one slot available for characters, with more being able to bought for real money, so choose wisely!
The Wizard is the first and oldest class in the game, focusing on magic and ranged attacks with wands, staffs and similar weapons. Wizards can use multiple types of weapons in their main hand, which can grant the player Barrage, Blast, Comet and Pierce attacks. Their offhand items on the other hand provide more supportive skills, including Teleport, Summon, Manashield and Skullshield. As the Wizard gains levels, they will also have the opportunity to use more powerful abilities such as Meteor, Twister, Timewarp and Shatter.
The Warrior in Dungeon Quest is the brave fighter class, as expected. He uses physical attacks and abilities with swords, hatchets and other melee weapons. Using these weapons grants the Warrior with attacks such as Cleave, Flurry, Smash and Charge. Offhand items also provide more powerful abilities like Bash, Sprint, Toss and Fear. These are not all the Warrior is capable of though, as when reaching higher levels they will be able to unleash Earthshatter, Torrent, Throwsword and Shieldwall as well!
The Rogue is the third and newest class in the game, using both melee and ranged weapons to cleanly assassinate her enemies. This class is able to use daggers, bows, flintlocks and even chakrams to fight, having abilities such as Quickattack, Guided Shot, Richochet and Boomerang. Offhand items also give the ability to use skills like Laytrap, Vault, Swap and Coatweapon. As the Rogue reaches higher levels, she will also be able to get new, powerful abilities like Blinkstrike, Smokebomb, Mirrorimage or Multishot.
Depending on which class you choose, you will not be able to use weapons and items meant for other classes. Don’t worry though, as each class has enough variety in available items to keep you entertained. Characters also level up as they gain experience, gaining 3 stat points per level. These points can be added to Power, Health or Mana, giving you passive bonuses.
Dungeon Quest features 8 difficulty levels: Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Epic, Legend, Mythic 1, 2 and 3. Choose as you wish, but later difficulty levels can make the game very hard. Each rise in difficulty level gives enemies more health and power, but also gives you more experience, luck and gold find. It’s a high risk – high reward system.
After choosing the difficulty, the game shows you 4 different acts, which decide the setting of the floors you will fight your way through. Each act has 5 different floors, each new floor being more difficult than the one before it, and every 5th floor being a Boss room. Does this mean the game only has 20 floors? Not exactly, as once you finish all 4 acts, there is still the option to continue and replay the previous acts, but with enemies being much tougher than before. This system makes it so that the game has 200 different floors to play on, and different truly means different, as the game uses randomly generated floors, so you won’t see the exact same one twice!
The general gameplay is simple, yet depending on your build can become much more complicated. Each floor has a random amount of enemies you have to fight, with random affixes. Affixes mean enemy bonuses in this case, so specific enemies are better at things than others. For example, you might run across slimes who are resistant to poison damage, but you might also find mummies who are faster and have more health than their basic counterparts.
Other than having basic and affixed enemies in Dungeon Quest, you can also find Minibosses, who are generally bigger than others, have more health and more damage. They also drop better loot, so killing them is beneficial, no doubt, but they are not as threatening as final Bosses are. You will find a final Boss at the end of each act, which can be a giant ooze or a giant wurm for example.
Regarding floors, you can finish each by finding the exit, marked by a giant green light. You can exit a level at any time, continuing to the next floor, even if you haven’t killed all enemies. Completely clearing a floor can be useful though, as it means more item drops and more experience for the player. You can also find shrines on each floor, which provide you with bonuses for the whole map when activated, including things like extra luck or extra experience.
We have talked about affixes on enemies, but they also appear on items. Dropped items, aka loot are randomly generated, just as levels are. Random affixes and rarities are added to each new item drop, making it so that you can never find the exact same weapon, armor or ring ever again in the game. Some of the loot is also rare enough that it needs to be identified before using it, making it an exciting option to reveal its hidden stats. Affixes for weapons can be anything starting from elemental damage, elemental resist or extra weapon damage to more exciting things like life leech, mana leech or extra gold find chance.
Set items and Legend items are the highest of rarity among all, as these can even be documented in the Hero Codex, along with your heroic Feats, the Affix Dictionary and Mythics. A completionist has a lot of different things to collect in Dungeon Quest.
Other than collecting items from enemies, you can also purchase them from the Merchant, which can be accessed at all times in the character menu. Items like health and mana potions, map reveals and random vendor weapons can be bought with gold gained ingame, but there are also items available for purchase with real money.
You can buy Experience, Gold and Luck boosts for $0.99 each, or even purchase gold for real money, starting from 100,000 gold for $0.99, all the way up to 10 million gold for $19.99, which is enough to buy you more than all the available items at the Merchant. There are also a lot of purely cosmetic items like wings, horns and halos available starting from $0.99 and going up to $4.99 for various packs.
Dungeon Quest also has a pet system, with some pets available as drops from enemies after level 20, while they are also up for sale at the Merchant both for real money and ingame gold. These pets can give you different bonuses depending on type. For example, the Imp pets pick up all unwanted items and give you a rare one in exchange, and the Fairy pets heal you when you fall below 50% health.
If pets are not helpful enough, then consider the Hireling system, which allows you to use one of your other characters as a hire. This needs you to have more than one character though, which can only be done if you purchase an extra character slot for $0.99.
The game also has some banner ads at the top of the screen, even during the heavily action packed gameplay. These can be disabled by purchasing any item for real money at the Merchant, or you have to tap the red X when they pop up.
While Dungeon Quest has generally simple gameplay, it can still be a great challenge after finishing the acts for the first time. As enemies become tougher and harder to deal with, the player might start looking for cheats. Cheats are a good way to make your gameplay easier, especially considering that this game is singleplayer only, so you are not hurting anyone with it. Let me give you a few hints and tips to make you more successful in Dungeon Quest.
When selecting any of the floors from the main menu, you have the option to choose the difficulty levels as well. Choosing Very Easy, Easy or Normal might be a good idea if you are new at the game and it turns out to be too hard. Higher difficulties are a great challenge later on though, so don’t forget about them!
As a tip, if you have troubles killing all enemies on a floor, consider leaving some of them behind. You can complete any floor without killing all enemies, except for Boss floors. This might set you back on experience and items a little bit, but it’s better than being stuck forever on a level.
Regarding leveling your character, you should try to think through your strategy. Do you want to be a damage dealer, who is hard to catch? Then invest most of your points in Power and some in Mana, so you will be able to use your skills often, while doing huge damage. This will make you vulnerable to a lot of damage, but dodging enemies can help with that. Or if you want to be a tank, then invest in Health and some in Power, so you can take a lot of hits, while also dealing damage. Any strategy can work, just think about it!
As for a last tip, if you really want to cheat the game, you can give a go to the health and mana leech affix on items, which will help you almost become invincible, as long as you attack. Enemies can’t outdamage you, if you keep stealing their health all the time.
Good ARPGs these days are generally hard to find, especially on mobiles, but I’m glad I got the chance to play try out Dungeon Quest. The developers behind this game had no fear to show off they can create a memorable experience in this genre, on a platform which doesn’t have enough of these type of games yet.
When I started playing the game, the first thing I noticed after picking my Rogue character was the option to choose from 8 different difficulty levels. That seemed a little too extensive at first, but as I finished the first few levels on Normal, I realized the game is pretty easy to play. It even has an option to use auto aim with ranged weapons. I have to confess that I actually decided with using this feature, as aiming at small, fast moving enemies with the bow turned out to be an unneccesary annoyance.
I couldn’t really enjoy the game with such a low level of difficulty, so I decided to use Epic, then Legend difficulty from that point on. After these changes, the game became somewhat harder to play and I even died once, but only because I was only paying half attention to the game at that moment. Still, even after this change enemies had serious trouble damaging my Rogue, who went with an almost full Power build, with some points in Mana. I never even put a single point in Health at level up, yet enemies still seemed to be weak.
Probably part of the reason why I had such an easy time with the game was because of the health and mana leech affixes. My weapons and some of my other armor items also had these affixes, which caused most of my damage to steal health and mana as well, essentially keeping me at full everytime I fought enemies. Maybe I broke the game with this combo, but I think this shouldn’t really happen.
After beating the first few bosses and acts, the game couldn’t really provide me with more challenge, even on the highest difficulty level, Mythic 3. Enemies had a lot of health, but still couldn’t kill me, no matter what. Fortunately all the random loot, the great music and atmosphere of the game helped me deal with this. After changing my build, I was able to have a more fair fight from then on.
The game seems to be a fine ARPG for mobiles with all of its features, like multiple distinct classes, pets, hirelings, randomly generated levels and items. This is basically what anyone looking for a game in this genre want, so it’s an easy choice to try Dungeon Quest out. Be wary of the leech affixes though, as they might make your game too easy as well!

Artwork: The artwork of Dungeon Quest gets a 7/10 rating from me. While the game doesn’t look exceptionally good, it has an interesting artstyle, fitting to the ARPG genre. Ability effects, maps, characters and enemies usually look fine, although a little more variety could help, as the design of enemies can be pretty similar to eachother.
Music & SFX: Regarding the music and SFX of the game, it deserves a 9/10. The music in this game is phenomenal, the tracks are easily comparable to computer based ARPGs’ musical scores with a much higher budget. The SFX also does its job well, even while it’s not as unique as the music.
Story & Originality: The story and originality of the game gets a 6/10. Since the game is singleplayer only, I would expect a detailed story to back it up, but it’s nowhere to be found. Without any story reason for dungeon delving, the action remains the only focus of the game. Fortunately, the action is done well enough to keep the player interested.
General Gameplay: I give the general gameplay of Dungeon Quest an 8/10. The gameplay is interesting enough to warrant multiple playthroughs, especially because of the multiple classes available. Using different classes, weapons and items all change up the playstyle, making it an exciting and new feeling when starting a new run. The floors are interesting and the bosses can be challenging, while there is also a tremendous amount of loot available, concluding the recipe for a pretty good game. The only issue is probably that some affixes can break the game, making the player unkillable, so avoid those if you want challenging content.
Addictiveness: The addictiveness of the game gets an 8/10 as well. With the four acts and over 200 floors, Dungeon Quest presents a challenge that’s not easy to beat in one sitting. Even after you finish the acts, you can play on and delve even further on various floors for even more loot. Finding unique set items and legend items is a great motivator for completionist players looking for a challenge to keep playing. Definitely a great pickup for any ARPG fan!
