The goal of Red Ball 4 is quite simple, you navigate yourself through each level, killing the evil squares and collecting as many stars as possible along the way. Each level is unlocked by beating the previous one. There are 60 levels across 4 worlds and at the end of each world you will be faced with a boss battle that must be beaten before advancing to the next world. When you first begin Red Ball 4 you will be shown a short animated clip which will introduce you to the games simple, yet entertaining story. You will see two red balls hanging out and having a grand old time when all of a sudden one of their friends appears, although instead of being a ball he is a square! The square red ball tells you about how the evil squares are planning to take over the world and turn everything into squares, now you, being the noble red ball that you are, decide that you will not allow that to happen, and then this is where your story begins.
The first level is quite simple with no enemies and no ways to die, it is pretty much just there to teach you the basics of the controls and game play, as you progress through the levels more obstacles and enemies are gradually introduced to you. Once you complete one level you will roll right on into the next one which I found was a nice touch to the game play that I am personally glad that the developers put into this game. The controls are incredibly simple and easy to use with left and right arrows for controlling the direction of your movement located in the lower left hand corner of the screen along with a circle button located in the lower right hand corner of the screen which is used for jumping.
In the top left hand corner of the screen you will find hearts that represent your available lives and in the top right hand side of the screen you will see a level completion bar that fills up a certain amount based on how many stars you obtain in the level. In the upper center of the screen there is a pause button that when hit comes up with 4 more buttons, a level selector button, a level restart button, a sound button which can either mute or un-mute the game’s sound, as well as an un-pause button.
On the main menu for Red Ball 4 there are also several more buttons. In the center of the screen you will find a t-shirt button that will allow you to change your ball, a play button that brings you to the level selection screen and a timer button that takes you to the speed run mode of the game where you try to complete each level as fast as possible, each world in speed run is unlocked after beating the world in the normal game mode. In the top right hand corner you will find a button for linking Red Ball 4 to Google Play Games and in the bottom of the screen there are buttons for accessing the developer’s Facebook and Twitter pages along with a settings button and a more games button.
Red Ball 4 is currently on version 1.2.6 and is available on both ios and android phones and tablets. It does require that you own either an android device with android version 2.3 gingerbread or later or an ios device running at least ios 5.1.1 or later which gives it a very large pool of compatible devices. Red Ball 4 is one of the few free games available without a large amount of in app purchases and with all of its in game content available without having to pay real money. There is a singular in app purchase option for $0.99 that removes all ads, unlocks every level without having to beat any previous levels, and gives you unlimited lives. I feel that this is a very reasonable purchase option and it is a great value and a good way to show support to the developer for making such a great free game.
While Red ball 4 may be a straightforward platformer that is fairly simple in design, it can get pretty challenging once you progress farther into the game. Luckily there are several strategies and tips that can help you when you begin to have trouble with a level. Probably the most important tip for success in Red Ball 4 is to understand the principles of the physics that are present in the game. You will need a rolling start to complete a long jump, and you must pay attention to and assess the momentum of certain objects in the game or else you will not be able to complete the levels that they are on. Another helpful tip is to try and get the gold medal on each level by collecting all of the stars and defeating all of the enemies, if you reach a checkpoint and realize that you missed a star or an enemy, it is probably a good idea to restart the level.
In Red Ball 4 there are plenty of things that can go wrong which can cause a level to become unbeatable, thankfully when this happens the face of your character will become sad which is a single for you to restart the level. This is a helpful addition to the game that makes it so you don’t have to waste time reaching a point in a level just to realize that you messed up and cannot beat it, you will know the instant that something goes wrong.
Always know how to defeat the different enemies in the game, the basic enemies get killed just from you simply bouncing on them so they are fairly simple, the ninja enemies jump around and you will need to jump on them twice to kill them, there are also several places where you will need to jump off of one of these ninjas to reach a star, button or platform, so look out for that. Once you reach the third world you will be introduced to enemies that explode after being hit, this explosion can do a lot of unwanted damage to your character so be sure to quickly get out of the way once you have hit them.
The last tip I have for you is to master the strategies used to defeat the bosses. Each boss uses the same strategy so learning how to play against it and beat it can be very helpful. To damage a boss you will need to hit them while their eyes are yellow, after you hit them 3 times you will unlock a checkpoint, at this point the boss will start summoning enemies for you to defeat, after defeating these enemies you will have to hit the boss 3 more times and then you will have successfully defeated the boss.
I personally enjoyed playing Red Ball 4 quite a lot. Several years ago I had quite a lot of fun playing The original Red Ball on my old iPod Touch (R.I.P old friend) so I was already fairly accustomed to the premise and basic game play of this version. The levels are all very fun and aren’t very repetitive and the controls are very smooth and well made. I really liked the level of difficulty present in many of the levels which made it a much harder task to achieve gold medals in every level. The challenges presented in each level do a great job of never getting dull and the cartoon graphics are truly phenomenal. I greatly appreciated the free to play model that the developers used in Red Ball 4, as the ads were not bad at all and every level is accessible without the need for in app purchases, and speaking of in app purchases, instead of there being multiple confusing options there is just one simple in app purchase that is a very reasonable $0.99.
Red Ball 4 has a great amount of replay value as well with the challenge of receiving a gold medal on every level and then the added challenge of getting a gold medal on each level of the speed run mode which itself is INCREDIBLY challenging. The soundtrack in Red Ball 4 had fun, catchy tunes that added a really nice playful feel to the game. I highly recommend Red Ball 4 to anybody who enjoys platforming or puzzle games as it has a ton of that content to offer for no cost at all.

Artwork: I give Red Ball 4 a 10/10 for its artwork. The cartoon graphics in the game are extremely well made and they look great as well. The different characters and backgrounds all come to life and you can really tell that the developers put a lot of work into making this game look amazing. The animated cut scenes are also a really nice touch and they look phenomenal as well as adding a fun storyline to the game to give your game play a little more meaning.
Music and Sound Effects: I give Red Ball 4 a 10/10 for its music and sound effects. The background music in the game really does a wonderful job of creating a playful game play environment with its simple yet catchy tunes. The sound effects are also executed flawlessly in the game as they really add to the game play in a positive way without becoming too distracting or annoying.
Story and Originality: I give Red Ball 4 a 10/10 for story and originality. The developers did an outstanding job of incorporating a story line into the game without it becoming too overbearing or complicated while still being a fun and original story. Red Ball 4 is a very original game that does a great job of incorporating aspects from other successful puzzle and platforming games and creating something entirely new out of them.
General Game Play: I Give Red Ball 4 a 10/10 for its general game play. The controls were smooth, easy to use, and most importantly always did what I wanted them to do. Each level offered new challenges to complete and new puzzles to solve all while being an incredibly fun game. The ads were also not bad at all which made the game play much more enjoyable.
Addictiveness: I give Red Ball 4 a 10/10 for its addictiveness. The game never got old as each level was different from the last. The game proved to be incredibly addictive and can be very hard to put down once you start. The speed run mode added quite a bit to the addictiveness as well.
