About Golf Star

Players can compete against one another or against the computers artificial intelligence on varying golf courses, some of which are based on actual golf course such as The Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass (TPC Sawgrass), some which are merely the products of an active imagination, such as the golf course at the pyramids of Giza. There is the career mode, practice mode, online tournaments, world tour tournaments, or team competition modes where up to thirty players can compete in real time.

After each game you can earn experience points and “Gamigo Points”. Other currencies to keep my mind are hearts as well as stars. Experience points are accumulated and go towards leveling up. Each time your character levels up they receive “ability points” which are used to improve the power, impact, control, and stamina statistics. The higher your level the more items and skills you unlock. Your character also accumulates skill points which help you learn various skills and shots to complement your overall game.

Gamigo points are used to purchase in game content like balls, outfits, golf clubs, as well as onus items that will improve your game such as increased stamina points, intelligence points, better accuracy etc. Star points are the premium currency in Golf Star and re considerably harder to come by than GP or experience points. Star points also unlock a much larger breadth of items, these points are awarded for the completion of in game quests, when you level up, or they can be directly purchased from the in app store using real money.

Heart are the “energy” component of Golf Star, hearts are used to initiate gameplay sessions. You are rewarded hearts on a continual basis and each game mode requires you pay a certain amount of hearts to begin, most require five hearts but occasionally it can get as high as 10 or 15 for featured events. Once you are out of hearts you must either buy them or promote the game via social media by posting about your loss. Generally speaking, the rate of replenishment for hearts is fairly equitable, however, if your gaming tendencies lean on the obsessive side than you’re going to be blowing through hearts faster than Yogi Bear at a picnic. Hearts can also be used to get bonus experience points and coins at the end of a round in a gambling type scenario where you have the option of giving up a few hearts for the chance of winning the “jackpot” a coin and points multiplier.

To utilize the social features of Golf Star you have to sign up for an account with HIVE. You can use the chat feature and converse with strangers without signing up, however, if you want to join a guild to know when your friends are online you have to sign up. There are some benefit to signing up with HIVE but based on your preferences it’s not a major inconvenience to avoid signing up.

There are three characters to choose from: David, Eve, and Chloe.  There aren’t many customizations as far as the characters themselves go but there is a wide variety of clothing options that really give the fashion forward golfer of today the chance at expressing themselves.

Cheats & Tips for Golf Star

To begin, if you’re not very well versed in golf terminology or the basics of the game, I’d highly recommend familiarizing yourself with the sport as you’ll be at quite a disadvantage otherwise. One of the first strategic goals you will encounter are quests. Quests are objectives that aren’t required to complete a course but can earn you bonus treats and are necessary to unlock the next set of courses. Each quest will have different rewards such as gold, items, and outfits.

There’s a plethora of things going on all at once in Golf Star, you’re constantly upgrading some skill or receiving some bonus, keeping track of these things and actually understanding them is probably one of the most crucial aspects that will determine whether or not you play the game or you thrive in Golf Star. New notifications, and there are a lot, will be easily recognizable by the red “N” icon that appears above the new whatever it is, be it message or item that you unlocked, etc.

Make a habit of occasionally checking these as they often contain important info or time limited gifts that are only active for a certain period of time. For example, once you level up several free items are sent to your inbox, the only way to redeem them is to open the message and hit the receive them, if this doesn’t happen within 6 days the free items are gone forever from your inbox and your life.

To get free coins and other in game currencies all you have to do is log in on consecutive days. The longer you can keep this log in streak alive, the more your rewards will grow. Also, there are many time specific events that are hosted by the developers that usually correspond to seasons, holidays, and the like.

One of the best cheats available to you can be bought in the game’s store. These are known as capsules or potions, these will boost your stats or provide you with tools that will greatly improve your gameplay. There are some which will improve your accuracy, strength, etc. but perhaps the most beneficial that I’ve found is the putting guide.

Much like golf in the real world, putting is one of the most difficult and skill intensive aspects of Golf Star. Based on the shapes of the curvature of the earth, the type and length of grass, you must make several accurate judgements to get that tiny white ball in the hole, a difficult task to say the least. The putting guide takes all of the guess work out of it, showing you the exact trajectory of your ball.

Golf Star Review

Golf star is an enjoyable game that you’ll never get to fully enjoy as the developers waste no opportunity in pitching a sale to you. The graphics were fairly well done for a mobile game but not the world class environment you’d expect based on the app store description. Gameplay itself was fairly uniform as far as golfing games are concerned variances between them are few and far between, what sets Golf Star apart from other mobile golfing games is the MMO and MMORPG features, but even these features are starting to gain traction as industry standards.

Although there are benefits to having many different options and features, the developers of Golf Star have overdone it to the max. At any given time there are 20 different things going on the home screen which is itself a cluttered mess. The notifications at the end of a match are far to over animated, the first time it’s cool but I’d rather not have to endure the same 30 second animation of a coin flipping and slot machines rolling every time I finish a match, I want to finish and move on to the next one.

Considering how often you’re targeted with advertisements you would think the developers would lay off with the energy requirements, these were especially annoying although there were several freebies to get you started. Customization options for your characters appearance are very limited and there are several aspects to this game which although they may be appropriate in South Korea, where the game is developed, were not what I would expect considering the iTunes store rated it as appropriate for ages 4+.

Not only is there simulated gambling, what is largely an open chat room, but users have the option of dressing their characters in skimpy outfits more suited for nightclubs than the golf course. Also the lobby music unfortunately sounded like actual lobby music.

It’s truly a shame that there are so many negative things that affect my overall perception of the game even though I thoroughly enjoyed the actual “playing” aspect. Being on the course is great and the competition is fun, but waiting 2 minutes for the game to load each time, hoping my connection doesn’t get interrupted, and having to navigate the million items on the screen just makes it too much of a hassle.

Ratings

Art 8.0/10

Vibrant graphics but nothing out of the ordinary. Far too much animation on the most trivial of things and a much too cluttered interface.

General Gameplay 8.0/10

Gameplay is itself was fun but it seemed like I spent more time reading notifications, waiting for the game to load, and upgrading stats I hardly cared about then actually playing.

Music/Sound Effects 6.5/10

The lobby music is simply terrible, generic, annoying elevator music. Once you pass that ordeal the game sound consist of birds chirping, oohs and ahhhs from the crowd, the sound of balls being hit, overall it was quite pleasant and relaxing environment much like you’d encounter on an actual golf course.

Addictiveness 7.5/10

Quite an addictive especially if you’re playing alongside friends on family via the multiplayer feature. There’ also a lot to do in terms of game modes, featured tournaments etc.

Creativity/ Originality 6.0/10

Nothing new has been added to golf since the caddy, the same goes for golfing games. The MMORPG aspect was a new twist though, being able to customize the characters, their equipment, and even the balls added a creative twist.

Overall 7.2/10
