Cheating Tom 2 is the newest arcade game by Crazy Labs, the developer who has also released other titles such as the original Cheating Tom, My Emma :), Borderline – Life on the Line, and Max Axe – Epic Adventure!
As for its ratings, Cheating Tom 2 has gained 4.3/5 stars on the Google Play Store so far, while having a perfect 5/5 stars rating on its most popular version on the Apple App Store. For a fairly new release, such high ratings are definitely unlikely, but Crazy Labs still did it. Let’s find out this secret to success together!
The game utilizes a gameplay mechanic that hasn’t been exploited too often yet, and can be called unique. Players familiar with the first installment of the game will be happy to hear that the basic formula remains, but potential new players might also find it quite interesting, indeed! The whole idea behind Cheating Tom 2 is that Tom is too lazy to study, and instead manages to pass all of his school years by cheating on his tests. To do this, he will have to move from student to student in the classroom on each of the 100 levels, and not get caught while doing so!

Before you even get to begin a level though, you are presented with the option to choose between the two main characters: Tom and Tammy, which are entirely visual differences. Once you made your choice and started a level, you begin at your desk, sitting in one of the 12 classroom settings, taking a test. You get to move to any other student by tapping on them, and holding down your finger while a little cheat-o-meter above the student fills up, which means you got an answer copied. The top of the screen has an indicator that shows your required answers to get good marks, the maximum being A+, obviously.
Each student in Cheating Tom 2 will also have a tolerance level, which means they will get annoyed if you keep copying multiple answers from them in a row, and they will start crying, then call the teacher to bust you. Students will also refuse to give out anymore answers after you keep harassing them for a while. The tolerance level is entirely different for each student and is based on their types, of which there are 11 to be found in the game! Some students, like the “Teacher’s Pet” will call the teacher after the first answer copied, while others, such as the Gentle Giant will not even get annoyed.
The time it takes to copy answers from each type of student also varies a lot, and some are easy to get answers from, while others take double as much time, but yield double answers as well. Students might also decide to leave class early at times, which means they will start blinking, and you have to stop them by moving to their seat, before they disappear.
Some student types even have special powers, which they will definitely activate multiple times during levels. For example, the “Outsider” alien has the power to teleport between seats each time you copy an answer from him, while the mage looking guys will keep teleporting on their own after a certain time has passed.
Not only students can be tricky in Cheating Tom 2 though, as the 10 different teachers also have their own patterns of scouting the classroom. All teachers are lazy in the beginning, but they will randomly start scouting the room at times, and listen to complaints by students with their cone of vision indicated on the screen. If you move into their vision at any time other than when you sit at your desk, that means you are busted, and deserve an F- for your test. Later on things will get even more tricky, as the principal might also check in at random times, doubling the dangerous vision cones.
To battle this somewhat unfair advantage teachers have, you get a few powerups to aid you. These usually appear on a random seat in the classroom, and you can pick it up by moving to the seat. The first powerup will turn you into a ghost for a few seconds, making you invisible to the teacher, while the second one will let you teleport from seat to seat for the same short time. The third powerup is an alien ship, which will kidnap the teacher for a few seconds, giving you a free cheat pass for the time being. There are also two more powerups that get unlocked later in the game, but let these be surprises for now!
Powerups in Cheating Tom 2 can also be upgraded, by spending coins earned after completing levels. Upgrading any powerup will usually add extra seconds to its active time, while upgrading multiple times will increase the price. Getting better grades on levels also yields more coins, than if you were to barely pass with a C, so doing well on levels means more upgrades for you!
A fun side feature of the game is the Year Book, which notes all of the students and teachers you got to know so far, with a witty description for each. You can also see your unlocked dances, which you get at every 10 levels, up until Prom Day.
As most free to play games, this one also includes in-app purchaes, allowing players to spend real money on coins, or to get “excuses”, which are used to excuse a bust, allowing you to continue a failed level instantly. A small bag of 25,000 coins is sold for $0.99, while a chest of 100,000 coins will cost $1.99. The cheapest bag of excuses goes for $1.99 and includes 3 excuses, while a chest of excuses costs $2.99 and has 10 excuses inside. If you were to wish for a really easy experience though, then you can purchase the “All Gates Pass” for $3.99, which will let you get away with all busts.
Cheating Tom 2 also has ads that will usually pop in on game start, and after every second failed or completed level, but they can be disabled by spending $0.99.
Cheating Tom 2, as the name suggests is all about cheating, but not only in the gameplay! As certain levels can be quite tricky, you will no doubt wish for excuses, or more coins to upgrade your unlocked powerups. For this reason you might want to take a look at exclusive cheats for the game. Whether you want to learn more about these options, or would just like a few tips, let me help you out!
The most useful cheats you can find in the game are the excuses, no doubt about that. Excuses cost real money though, don’t they? Thankfully, there is also a free option to get an excuse per level. All you have to do is watch an ad after you got busted, which then awards you with a free excuse, used immediately to continue the level. Use this at any opportunity, as it can save you time, especially if you were deep into the level already.
There is also a way to get free coins by watching similar ads in the menu, which will award you with 1000 coins at a time. You can repeat this multiple times in a row, essentially creating a free flow of coins to fuel your powerup upgrades!
Regarding gameplay tips, one of the most important things you have to learn about the game is to memorize each student and teacher’s patterns. If you know how often a student cries for a teacher, or how long it takes to copy their answers, it can ease your gameplay a lot. The same is true for teachers: if you know how wide or how fast the cone of vision of each one’s is, then you will have a great advantage.
It might be obvious, but you should never forget to use the powerups of Cheating Tom 2 either. Anytime they appear, if you are outside of the teacher’s vision range, then you can only get advantageous over them by grabbing the powerup. Turning into a ghost will be useful in all situations to blatantly cheat, just as taking the alien spaceship. The teleporting powerup is also a great tool to move fast between seats, but it doesn’t prevent you from getting caught, if you are unwary.
Cheating Tom 2 is a funny little game with an unique idea. The developers listened to the original game’s diehard fans to release this sequel, and they probably made the right call. But are the fairly similar gameplay, and a few smaller changes enough to keep it entertaining?
The story of Cheating Tom 2 didn’t change much from the original, where his goal was to get a bicycle by the end of the school years, and in this one the goal has changed to going to the prom with the girl he likes. Kids grow up, I guess, although in not all aspects. Tom still remains the cheat he were before, and he desperately avoids actual studying!
During my time with the game, I honestly had a lot of fun, even after passing almost half the levels in the game. Some of them might seem similar at a first sight, but each has some challenge in one way or another. Getting an A+ on each level is a true challenge, as the first few levels might be a walk in the park, but once you unlock powerups, new type of students and teachers, the game gets harder and harder.
As for the general difficulty, the first 15 or so levels were pretty easy, and I could simply A+ all of them, without a chance to fail once. Then once passing that mark, a lot of new students kept appearing, with new features and powers, as well as more observant teachers, making my cheating attempts futile at times. I’m truly thankful to the excuse cheats, as they helped me out a few times to keep playing a level I almost completed, before the failure. Reaching later stages require more thinking, instead of going randomly from student to student, and timing my moves were crucial, which I really liked.
Overall, Cheating Tom 2 is a highly entertaining game, with a fairly different and unique idea, which works out for a second time, after the original game. If you loved the first, or want something simple to pick up, yet hard to master, then get this!
Ratings
Artwork: The artwork of Cheating Tom 2 gets a 9/10 from me. While the game might not be the most pretty you have ever seen, it definitely gets extra points for its cute, cartoonish artstyle. Most characters are easy to distinguish, and there is also a great variety in environments, which helps the visuals feel fresh in the long run.
Music & SFX: The music and SFX of the game deserves an 9/10. The sneaky music in the game’s levels makes me instantly feel nostalgic for certain cartoons, as it reminds me of them so much. This music fills the game with soul, especially as it even changes dynamically, as you keep copying answers in a tight spot. The SFX are realistic and do just what they need to.
Story & Originality: I give the story and originality of Cheating Tom 2 an 8/10. While this is the second installment of the game, the idea still feels fresh enough to warrant a high rating. The story is simple, yet follows the player around until the end. The unique gameplay mechanics are also executed in a way that it never feels tiresome.
General Gameplay: As for the general gameplay, I give the game an 8/10. The gameplay is spot on in this title: mix the addicting mechanic of cheating with powerups, the dangers in the form of teachers and the annoyed students, then you got a tasty cake of an awesome game! The difficulty is also just perfect, with easier and tough levels sprinkled all around, but never touching unfair grounds.
Addictiveness: As for the addictiveness rating, the game gets an 8/10 yet again. Once you start this game, you won’t be able to put it down for a few hours, that’s for sure. Each level just makes you wish for one more, which often ends up being more than one. The gameplay has so many mechanics mixed together that this funny arcade game is truly an addictive gem.
Overall Score: 8/10.
