If you are any familiar with drag racing games, you will not be surprised by the gameplay of Perfect Shift at all, but if you are new to the genre, then you might find a few interesting aspects! The gameplay is fairly simple: you and an opponent are placed at the start line next to eachother, ready to race. You get to rev up your engines until the countdown reaches one, then the race automatically starts. The tachometer at the bottom of the screen indicates when your engine is in a “perfect”, “good” or “bad” position. Depending on how well you revved, you will either start perfectly or badly, impacting your speed.
Once the race has started, you will have to keep watching your tachometer, as it will tell you when to shift, which is the most important factor in a drag race. Shifting at the perfect time is indicated by green, while shifting too early or too late will pop up in red. Just as when you started the race, a perfect shift will increase your speed and a bad shift will lower it. You have to shift a few more times until the end of the race, and the more perfects you get means more chance to win.
Now, Perfect Shift has multiple game modes to let you use your shifting techniques and gather cash, including Story and Online modes. The Story mode doesn’t limit itself into a single type of race, instead it’s separated into multiple different types, including the basic Story, the Ladder, Daily, Scheduled and The Club. As you progress in these singleplayer races, you will get to move on to Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4 races, played around the world with better and better cars, but first you have to beat the Level 1 Story challenges.
The Story is the first mode which you will want to play, and it includes opponents who have cars that rapidly increase in performance, as you get further up on the ranks. The first opponent you beat in the Story might come back later, with a new car that’s double as powerful as the first one. You will also get to be part of a light storyline, where you get to prove yourself to the “cool kids” of town.
The second race type in Perfect Shift will be Ladder, which is a somewhat similar to Story, but opponents don’t increase in performance that fast, and therefore you can win multiple races in a row without upgrading your car much. The Ladder is made up of 18 increasingly difficult opponents, and a new Ladder is found on each Level. Then there is the Daily race, in which you can participate twice a day, and you get to use a random car to race against a random opponent. The next type of race is the Scheduled, which you can play four times with ever changing rules. Lastly, you get The Club, which is a prestigious club, where you get six opponents, of which you can choose who to race, and each race costs a ticket to start. Winning races in this mode will unlock better opponents, with better rewards and fame points to gather. If you run out of tickets, you can buy 3 more for 8 diamonds.
In case you got tired of the singleplayer experience of Perfect Shift, then head onto the Online races! This is where you get to prove yourself against other players from around the world, in seasonal races with four stages. Each stage includes 15 players who you have to be victorious against, which means you win the stage. Each stage also requires its players to use a predetermined car, so overall you have to have four different cars to participate. Players who have completed any stage will receive rewards at the end of the season for their car. Depending how fast you complete stages, you will even get to rank on the leaderboards!
Racing is fun and all, but part of the enjoyment for drag racers is to customize and upgrade their cars for cash! Thankfully, you get to do this in this game as well, with a great number of options. As for customization, you can change your car’s color and rims at any time, or you can add vinyls that are different for each car, including lines, flames, abstract patterns and symbols. Each customization on your car will add a cash bonus, which you will earn after any race, even if you lost.
Upgrading is different though, as each upgrade directly enhances your car’s statistics, so it will do better on your upcoming races. There are available upgrades for engines, turbo, gearbox, tires, weight, aerodynamics and nitro. Nitro even adds a few seconds long speed burst button, which you can use once per race. Depending on how many upgrades you install, your car’s performance value will rise, which will help compare it against opposing cars, so you know which opponent you have a chance to win against.
As you earn your place in the Story mode, and your upgrades reach the top, you will want to progress towards Level 2, 3 and 4, all of which will require newer, higher leveled cars to purchase. For this reason Perfect Shift has a Dealer, where you can buy any car for cash or diamonds, but only from levels that you have unlocked.
To get more cash or diamonds, you can use the in-app purchases to buy more of both currencies. The cheapest packs to purchase are the Starter Packs, costing $2.99, and include 30,000 cash or 30 diamonds. On the other side of the spectrum is the Elite Pack, which can be purchased for $99.99, and includes 1300 diamonds. You can also watch a few optional ads for free cash, but diamonds can’t be gathered this way.
The case is almost always the same with free to play games: you get some free currency at the beginning, but only just enough to get you a taste of what could be purchase with it, before they run out. To help battle this in Perfect Shift, there might be a few cheats and tips coming your way, just read on!
Before you stray towards the highly useful cheats, you might consider to give another go to the options the game presents to get free currency. In the case of cash, you can get some from daily login rewards, or by watching optional ads, although these reward all that much. Your best bet for cash is to win races, as they can award you over a 1000 at a time. As for diamonds, if you gain enough fame in The Club, you will get periodic diamond rewards, but only tiny amounts at a time. If you are lucky, your daily login reward might contain some as well, but other than these ways, your only options left are the in-app purchases. If you dislike those, then move onto the real cheats!
Regarding gameplay tips of Perfect Shift, you should avoid the Online modes until your car is tuned high enough to have a chance against real opponents. Playing the Scheduled, Daily and Ladder races will make sure you get a steady income of cash, and you should also advance in the Story anytime your car’s performance matches or is higher than your current opponent’s. Playing these races will fund you with enough cash to participate against other players, but winning each stage will still take a long time, so expect that!
At times you might feel like you want new cars all the time, but honestly, the best tip I can give you is that you should try and keep your car upgraded to the allowed maximum at all times, instead of buying new ones, as it’s what matters the most in races. Your reflex to shift at the right times is crucial, but if your car is slow and weak, then it won’t matter! If you really want to win all stages Online, only then is your time to buy new cars, but remember that each car will need upgrades as well, so if you buy a new one, then you will have to cash out even more!
Drag racing is quite popular, no doubt about that, but do players just want the same formula, or do they wish for new things? Perfect Shift takes its place among the first group, keeping it close to the basics and giving its players a place to live out their drag racing dreams. Did I enjoy it, though?
As far as the introduction and the first few test races went, I already felt at home, having played a few of these type of games before. I got introduced to the city nightlife and met a mechanic girl, Shelley, who decided to help me make a name for myself in the racing world. After meeting a few rude opposing racers, I got to test my first car in real match, against Harry. Harry soon got sent home crying, not believing what just happened, and I went on my way to join the ranks in the Ladder races.
Regarding the Story mode, I could only advance slowly, as the opponents seemed to get new cars pretty often, which meant I had to keep upgrading mine to match them. To do this, I first had to get some cash, which the Scheduled, Daily and Ladder races seemed to be perfect places to be for. Most of these races were fairly easy early on, and as I kept upgrading my car, I had a steady income from them, while also moving up the ranks slowly. I beat Harry another time in the Story, along with some other guys, and everything seemed to be fun and games.
But then I made the mistake of joining a multiplayer match, which destroyed my hopes entirely. Even the first opponent in Stage 1 was much stronger than me, and I lost to him multiple times, until I grinded out a few more upgrades for my car. The next few opponents were close in car performance, but it was still tough and time consuming to win. Then I got to a point where I just had no chance to continue, as my next opponent was way too powerful for me. My choices were the following: either pay for in-app purchases to get more cash to upgrade, or grind out races until I got bored of it.
Overall, Perfect Shift can be summed up as a highly enjoyable singleplayer drag racing game, which also has an multiplayer side, that is less developed and has a paywall. If you are fine with the solo game modes, then you will not be disappointed in the game, but the multiplayer matches will be a little disheartening.
Ratings
Artwork: I give Perfect Shift an 8/10 for its artwork. Some games might look good at a distance, but when you close in they turn out to be pretty ugly. This one doesn’t play around like that, as this game is pretty all around. Car models and the racing roads are high detailed and feel almost life-like, although backgrounds can be a little lower resolution, but not in a distrupting or highly noticeable way.
Music & SFX: The music and SFX of the game gets an 8/10 as well. The game includes multiple electronic songs for the menu and even more for the races, which greatly helps keep the atmosphere fresh and exciting. The SFX are basic and limited to wheel noises and the powerful sounds of the engines, but are executed well.
Story & Originality: As for the story and originality of Perfect Shift, it deserves a 6/10. As in most drag racing games, the story is very basic and doesn’t require much thought to think of. You are new in town, meet a beautiful mechanic girl and she helps you reach the top by winning races against loudmouthed racers. I mean, there isn’t much else to it, honestly. It’s not the most original title, sadly.
General Gameplay: The general gameplay gets a 6/10 from me. While the overall gameplay mechanics are super solid and do their job perfectly, the game suffers from a paywall case. As for the singleplayer, most modes are fun and can be completed just by playing the game on your own pace, and if it’s all you want, then you got a great game! But if you ever wish to get into the Online modes, then be ready to pay, or grind for a while. To compete against most real players in four stages, you will need to have constant upgrades for four different cars, which is unsustainable, if you don’t repeat the same levels over and over again.
Addictiveness: I give the addictiveness of this game a 7/10. While the multiplayer issues are really annoying, you can have a perfectly fun and long lasting singleplayer experience with this game, if you are into drag racing. In case you wish to play this for online glory, then I would say you will need a great deal of patience.
