Who doesn’t love stickmen? In the end, they are one of the easiest ways to doodle in a boring class, or if you are procastinating on something. DreamSky agreed with this, and decided to create a game based entirely around the idea of stickmen battles. Introduce some light RPG elements and a simple Campaign into the mix and you have got a full game!
The general gameplay of League of Stickman Free revolves around the League, where the action happens. You choose one or two heroes from the available pool of heroes, then take on a battle in the Campaign. The Campaign is made up of Chapters, of which all include 5 levels each. Finishing a whole Chapter will let you progress onto the next one, all the way until you reach the very end of the game.
Each level takes your chosen heroes into a battlefield, where you have to act immediately, as a wave of enemies are spawned soon after you arrive. You control one of your available heroes by the movement buttons on the left side, while the attack button and four skills of the current hero are located on the right. You also have a swap hero button, which is used to put you in control of another hero you brought into the level. When you are not controlling one of your heroes, they will fight by themselves.
During the combat of League of Stickman Free, you are able to use two types of attacks: a basic attack, which is a simple meele or ranged strike, or if you hold down the attack button, it executes a combo attack, with flashy strikes comboed together. The four skills of each hero are available from the start to all heroes you unlock. Skills stay true to the design of the heroes, such as the frost archer Athy will have huge ice arrows, an icy arrow volley, a knockup arrow, and a huge freezing laser ultimate. On the other hand Gus, a tanky meele hero will have slashing strikes, an area of effect knockdown, a spinning attack and a huge falling laser strike ultimate.
Enemies will constantly be about to kill your heroes, and after you defeat a wave of them, they will be replaced by a new wave, all the way until the boss of the level. Each level has a boss in the last spawned wave, which if you manage to defeat, all other enemies perish and you win the level. Enemies come in all kinds of varieties, some of them being basic warriors or ranged attackers, while there are also fast moving beasts and high armored tanks. Bosses are usually similar to basic foes, but with enhanced size, attacks and some special moves, such as a knockup or dash effect. Powerful foes also drop items and coins on their death, which you can collect by moving through them.
Of course, there are all kinds of customization options in League of Stickman Free, such as the Equip screen, where you can equip items dropped by dead enemies to your heroes, an enhance system and a Skill upgrade menu. Most weapons, armor and crystals will either provide +ATK, +DEF or +HP stats to the hero you equip them to. All heroes start with six slots to equip one star items to, which will increase as they level up, allowing them to equip higher quality items.
These same items can also be enhanced in a separate menu, which means you can spend coins dropped by foes to add extra stats to them. Enhancing can be done multiple times, but it will cost more and more. The last way to upgrade your heroes is by going to the Skill menu, where you can spend coins the same way you did for enhancing, but it will add extra power to the chosen abilities.
The game has a secondary, more challenging mode, the Dungeon. In this mode the difference is that you choose three heroes instead of two, and you have to fight five huge Dungeon bosses, unlike anything you have seen in the Campaign. These bosses have thousands of health and can only be defeated with three highly powerful and fully upgraded heroes. Beating the first boss will award one star equipment drops, while being victorious over following bosses will award two, three, four and five star equipment.
Don’t worry, League of Stickman Free gives players more opportunities to gain new equipment, in the form of Treasures. You can purchase Standard Treasures for coins and Deluxe Treasures for the premium currency of gems. Inside them you can find equipment of various qualities. Heroes can be purchased the same way, ranging from 100 gems to 1000 gems in price, in case you got bored of your basic ones. Luckily, you can also try out any hero in a training area before purchase.
To fuel your gem needs, the game gives out 10 gems for each successfully finished level, while there are also in-app purchases to buy both coins and gems. $1 gets you 50,000 coins or 50 gems, or if you want to go all out, then you can spend $100 for 5,000,000 coins or 5000 gems. Lastly, there is the option to watch an ad for 2 gems per ad, usable any number of times.
League of Stickman Free has a business model that requires you to spend gems to unlock new heroes, otherwise you get stuck with the same ones for days on end. Why not just use some cheats to bypass this payment wall, and get those gems for free? Let me give you a few hints about these cheats, and also list a few tips to ease your experience!
One of the simplest ways to get more gems is by playing the game is to farm the Campaign. You get 10 gems for each level, which means if you finish 100 levels, you will be able to unlock the most expensive hero, the Hunter. Well, that does sound like a lot of levels, but only one hero costs so much. You can get multiple other heroes for the low cost of 100 gems, which you only need to complete 10 levels for. Then of course there is also the option to watch a few ads for extra gems, if you are tired of playing levels over and over again. These might not be the most low effort ways to get gems, but the cheats are exactly for that!
As for general gameplay tips, you should keep upgrading your heroes after each Chapter in the Campaign, as enemies usually drop pretty good items by the time you beat five levels. Equip these and sell your old ones to get more coins, then consider enhancing your new weapons, armor and crystals. Then of course you should also upgrade the power of your hero abilities, although these can be a little costier than item enhancements. Only do these if you can afford to spend so much.
Lastly, a tip regarding the Dungeon: This is a truly hard area in League of Stickman Free, which is nothing like the Campaign. You can’t just go in there unprepared, as the bosses are extremely powerful. In case you were to die though, you can use the Resurrect cheat, which costs 10 gems to use, but it will resurrect your fallen heroes in battle.
League of Stickman Free combines two things a lot of people enjoy: stickmen and combat action. Does it work out as well as it sounds? In my opinion, it’s a little bit of yes and no.
Yes, the game works out, because the combat is spot on. Most hero abilities I got to try during my gameplay were fun to use and had flashy effects, which describes the combat very well. It’s full of flashy attacks and devastating battle sounds, which makes it feel great and makes you wish for more. The character and level design is also spot on, as it entails a true stickman experience.
Then there is the no, which is also related to the combat. Sadly, the things I got to like in the beginning got really tiresome after passing multiple Chapters in the Campaign. The same level backgrounds kept repeating in all of the levels, while I also seen a lot of the same enemies. Then some new enemy variety got introduced, but sadly most of them do exactly the same thing as the enemies on the first level. Only a few bosses and tougher foes use special skills, all others just keept attacking mindlessly and are easy to distrupt and destroy.
The Dungeon of League of Stickman Free on the other hand felt a little bit too tough for me, even when I had three upgraded heroes, it was very hard and I couldn’t beat it on the first few tries. It really required me to have at least level 10 heroes to even attempt the first boss. I feel like it’s a little bit too challenging compared to the Campaign, which is too easy. Something in between the two would have been amazing.
As for the equipment enhancements and skill upgrades, it doesn’t really help that the gameplay gets somewhat stale after a while. Sure, it’s a way to progress and make my heroes even more powerful, but it’s really just “tap that button to spend some coins and add power”, instead of having meaningful choices.
It seems like constantly unlocking heroes is the way to play League of Stickman Free, otherwise it will get a little boring, after you played multiple Chapters with the same two. Sadly, unlocking heroes can be costy, and once you have all the cheap ones, you will be stuck for a while until you can get anything new. Still, the game is fun for what it is, especially the combat feedback. Go give it a try, if you like what you see, it’s free!
Ratings
Artwork: The artwork of League of Stickman Free deserves an 7/10. Visually the game is extremely simple, except for the impressive skill effects, but it can get away with it thanks to the whole stickman aesthetic. Even the menus are reminiscent of something along the lines of a browser based game from 2005, but it fits the design of the game.
Music & SFX: As for the music and SFX, I give the game a 9/10. I must say, the music is phenomenal in this game. I can’t say anything bad about the menu’s track, or the ingame music, as both really fit the mood and the high action gameplay. Then there are the SFX, especially the attack and skill sounds, which feel impactful and make you feel like you really just crushed your foes.
Story & Originality: The originality of the game gets a 6/10 from me. Stickman games are not the most popular these days, but there are still a lot of them to be found. The game also obviously copies the hero designs and abilities from League of Legends, which is also indicated by the title. It’s not what I would call original, but it does its job well enough.
General Gameplay: I give the general gameplay a 5/10 as well. Sadly I can’t rate the gameplay any higher, as there are some obvious problems. The enhancement and upgrades features of the game feel unoriginal and I wish there would be more planning involved with them. The combat can also get tiresome after playing for hours, and only new hero unlocks can help with it, which can be too costy after a while.
Addictiveness: The addictiveness level of this title gets a 6/10. For a stickman fighting game, this is definitely among the top ones, even with its issues. For long lasting play, it’s not the best though, and you might get bored of it, but it can get you a few hours worth of fun.
Overall Score: 6/10.
