Tap Sports Football is a sports game created by Glu Games Inc, a company which, in my opinion has a suitable motto: “Mobile Games for everyone”. The company is known for other games such as Deer Hunter 2014, Frontline Commando: WW2 or Blood & Glory. Tap Sports Football is available on both Android and Apple and it has a rating of 3.9 out of 5 on the Google Play Store. Currently there aren’t enough ratings on App Store so the number of stars the game got is currently unknown. In order to run at optimal parameters, it requires and Android version of at least 3.0 or, for Apple users, iOS 7.0. The game was downloaded for more than 1 million times in 2016 on both platforms.
In Tap Sports Football you take the role of an entire team. You pick your players using the popular draft mode of the American football and you compete against other players while you keep improving your team. You are not only a player but also a coach and you will find out that the game has a lot more to offer – achievements, a section where you can choose to check your stats and so on.
The game has two types of resources called Gold and Cash. By unlocking achievements you earn cash and you can use it to upgrade your players, for instance. The Gold, which is the premium currency can be spend on new players, better equipment (uniforms) and many more. Fortunately, for people who like to show their support to the developers by paying real money, in Tap Sports Football you can purchase both of them. The price for Gold starts from $3.99 for a stack of gold and goes up to $89.99 for a mountain of gold. The price for Cash varies as well having it starting from $3.99 for a wad of cash and going up to $89.99 for a mountain of cash.
Tap Sports Football does not require a mandatory Sign-Up but you can Sign-In with different social accounts such as Facebook or Google Play. I believe that this is a good idea because it will save your game progress and ensure no data is lost in case of changing devices or something like that.

When I first heard about Tap Sports Football I wasn’t sure that I will enjoy the game because Football matches tend to have a pretty long duration and you may or may not have that time. Then, when I realized that the game is mostly multiplayer but turn-based, I was really intrigued.
Probably the thing I like the most about Tap Sports Football is the fact that the game easily shifts between the turn-based mode, the live mode and even a full-simulation mode. Depending on your mood and your available time, you can keep playing your turns in more than a few different games (the concept is similar with World with Friends by Zynga) or you can fully experience a game of football. Another great thing about Tap Sports Football is the fact that you have to use the draft mode to get players. It is always interesting to see how lucky can you get or to try to spot the future star in football.
This mechanics reminds me of baseball cards but with football. I also like that you have some sort of training method implemented – it is true that you basically buy training (that sounds so wrong) from the shop but at least you have a way of improving your team defense or offense. Moreover, the instructions you give to your players are really efficient and that will most likely boost your coach ego. Another thing I appreciate is that in Tap Sports Football you are not overflowed with ads – there are some but nothing too annoying.
In the following section I will explain briefly what I don’t like about Tap Sports Football or what I would change if I were one of its developers. First of all, at its current status, the game is a bit unfair for the players who don’t want to constantly invest real money. Microtransactions and differences between users who play the game for free and those who don’t is normal but this weighs way too much in Tap Sports Football because it is almost impossible to get stars and franchise players with the gold you get for free. Secondly, I think that the game needs a more thorough tutorial.
Most of the players will probably know the American Football rules and even if they don’t, they will soon understand the concept but the issue lies somewhere else – it is very overwhelming to understand all the stats of the players, in what situations they are most efficient and so on. Another tutorial (call it Advanced or something like that) can be quite useful in my opinion. Finally, I believe that at first, people don’t fully understand the whole turn-based concept of Tap Sports Football and the initial games and maybe even the league placement ones should be played faster than the rest – in other words, if the opponent player doesn’t act in an hour or so, you win by forfeit. There is a chance that he may never return again.
Overall, I would probably recommend Tap Sports Football but only to the football fans all over the world. It is a bit difficult to understand the mechanics of the game so you should avoid it if this is your first time. There are some other titles which are more “user-friendly” in 2016.
Ratings
Artwork: Tap Sports Football gets a rating of 6 out of 10 for its artwork. There is a small problem of appreciation here because the game is on one hand focused on the draft picks and the way you build your team but on the other hand it is a sports game and any player will expect at least decent graphics. Unfortunately, the developers decided not to focus on the last because the game looks pretty awful. The menus are cool and they look modern but that’s basically all. The character design and the environment looks like the game was taken from the 90s. The players’ movement looks unnatural. The visual effects or the other animations are non-existent or looking very rudimentary.
Music & SFX: I give the game a rating of 6 out of 10 at this section. I was disappointed to see that a sports game which is well-known for its loud fans has such unimpressive sound effects. I can understand the fact that the game focuses on other stuff but it is unacceptable to ignore completely this “department”. There are a few sound effects, that’s true, but they are boring and very repetitive. Also, there is a small symbolic soundtrack in the menus but it doesn’t really match with the game’s theme nor provides the atmosphere it should provide.
Story/Originality: Tap Sports Football gets a rating of 8 out of 10 at this segment. When talking about a sports games, in 90% of the cases there will not be a story because people don’t want one. The sports games are focused on careers and fortunately, Total Sport Football has one. The game is almost entirely multiplayer and creating your team and leading it to glory came naturally. There aren’t many original elements in the game because you can’t reinvent football rules. However, Total Sport Football stands out when you compare it with similar titles (with bigger fan bases too) and that is not easy to achieve.
General Gameplay: I give Tap Sports Football a rating of 7 out of 10 for its gameplay. In theory, the game is piece of cake because all you have to do is to decide which type of pass your players should make and when you should run. However, there is much more than this. You need to create a tactic, to compare your players and spot their weaknesses and their best positions, you need to exploit your opponent’s team and so on. And this can be really overwhelming for both new users and experienced ones. As I mentioned before, the game needs an additional tutorial that should cover all of this. For the time I’ve played I haven’t encountered any major bugs, freezes or crashes.
Addictiveness: Tap Sports Football gets a rating of 8 out of 10 for its addictiveness. Sports games are usually addictive only when they are played by fans of that sport. If you love football, you will consider a football game addictive no matter how dull it is. You will get bored at some point but until then it doesn’t matter. Fortunately, Tap Sports Football is a pretty addictive game nevertheless. You have different game modes, it is almost entirely multiplayer and as I mentioned for so many times already, you draft your team. You will join competitions and you will continuously train your players so they can fulfill their potential. What can you wish more for?
Overall, Tap Sports Football gets a rating of 7 out of 10. The rating is rather low but only because of some bad choices the developers made and it shouldn’t influence too much the players. The game has a lot of potential.
