Vikings: War of Clans is a strategy game created by Plarium Global, a company that developed other games such as Stormfall: Rise of Balur, Poker Shark or Total Domination – Reborn. The game is available on both Android and Apple platforms in 2016 and it has an outstanding rating of 5 stars out of 5 on App Store and 4.4 stars out of 5 on Google Play. In order to run smoothly, the game requires a version of 4.0 or up for Android users and IOS 6.0 or later for Apple devices.
In Vikings: War of Clans you take the role of a Viking warrior who wants to prove that he is worthy to be the lord (jarl) of the Northern lands and to rule his devoted people. At first sight, the game seems to be challenging so you have to be dedicated and to learn how to master the rules of strategy in order to succeed.
There are five different types of resources in Vikings War of Clans: food, lumber, iron, stone and silver. Besides the resources there is also a premium currency called Gold which you can use to buy the resources mentioned before, for relocations or to upgrade your buildings. What you have to keep in mind is that you will need both gold and resources for almost anything you want to achieve in the game. As you may have guessed, there are some real-money purchases that can be made and they usually consists of packages that offer you gold, resources, hours of speed-up, VIP points, hours of boosting and many other things. Depending on the advantages that the package provides the price varies, starting from $2.29 and going up to $119.99 per purchase.
The game does not require a mandatory sign-up but if you link the game with your Facebook account you will receive 1000 gold and also you ensure no data loss in case you change your device or, for some reason, you uninstall and then reinstall the game. Also, the game can be linked with a Google Play account…if you still use that.

If you are a person who likes history in general but you have a soft spot for the Vikings lore and at the same time you are a gamer and coincidence or not you are also fond of strategy titles how would you feel when you would be in the situation of reviewing a strategy mobile game with Vikings as a main theme? Enthusiastic, I tell you. Unfortunately the enthusiasm will last until you get pass the loading screen and you realize that you play Clash of Kings with a different theme…
Probably the best thing I did in Vikings War of Clans so far is joining an alliance. The community is relatively new and if you have questions of any sort they usually help you. Try to ignore the main chat because it is full of spam and weird looking languages (no offence to my international readers). In addition to this, I believe that the clan-only events and tasks are a nice addition – it makes people work together.
Another great thing about this game is the possibility of doing basically anything you want or please. Your role is to be the best Viking in the realm, that’s true, but theoretically you can achieve this title in so many ways that you will probably never do it anyway. Even though you have a pretty dull skill tree for you hero, there are several other technologies that can be researched and put to good use. The key of Vikings War of Clans is the exploration – starting with the actual map and surroundings but also menus, buildings and events.
There are more than a few things that I don’t really like about Vikings: War of Clans. First of all and the biggest disappointment so to speak is the fact that the game no matter what the developers are saying is pay to win. You can get gold and resources for free but the advantage the players who invest real money have is too big. This is an issue that is more and more common into games like this.
Speaking of games like this, the second biggest complain I have about Vikings: War of Clans is the fact that it is similar with Clash of Kings. I will detail more of this later but I couldn’t help myself not to mention it. I really don’t understand what people want to achieve when they “develop” an identical game with just a different layout and some additional meaningless features. Finally, I think that Viking: War of Clans is a very complex game and because of this it needs a thorough tutorial. You learn the basics, that’s true but a helper throughout the first of week of your gameplay or something like that can be very helpful for newcomers and usual players both.
Overall, Vikings: War of Clans is a game I would personally not recommend for 2016. The similarities with other games is too obvious. However, if you are a fan of the Vikings lore, you probably should give it a try nevertheless. Maybe you will like to be a Jarl, who knows.
Ratings
Artwork: Viking War of Clans gets a rating of 8 out of 10 for its artwork. In general, strategy games aren’t required to have “incredible realistic graphics” and I will never expect such a thing. The game looks better than its source of inspiration, that’s for sure. The city/castle (depending of your preference) looks interesting and from time to time lively. The map is not that great but there is an improvement in graphics nevertheless. I like the theme and I appreciate that everything about Vikings War of Clans (building design, troop names and looks and so on) is oriented around the theme because that’s a really good thing.
Music & SFX: The game gets a rating of 9 out of 10 at this section. As expected, a game about Vikings can’t have bad music. The atmosphere the soundtrack creates is nice as it should be and the songs (yes, there is more than one, I was shocked too) are matching with the theme. There aren’t many sound effects in a game like this but you have the usual troop grunts and each building comes with its very own sounds set so I can’t complain too much about anything. However, like always, there is room for improvement.
Story/Originality: Viking War of Clans gets a rating of 5 out of 10 at this section. The judgment day has finally arrived. During the review, I always mentioned the fact that there is a great resemblance between this game and Clash of Kings (and lot others – Game of War is a title I can think of right now). I am not necessarily disappointed because everything is almost the same, I am getting used to this (think of how many Clash of Clans copies are on the market). I am disappointed because this game had the potential of being a really interesting mainly because of the lore which was never used before. However, having just a good story is no excuse.
General Gameplay: The game gets a rating of 7 out of 10 for its gameplay. I already said that I feel that the tutorial doesn’t cover up every aspect of the game and it should be improved so we will focus on other things. Vikings War of Clans has some pretty big hardware requirements and even though it should work fine on older equipment, the possibility of freezing is really big so you should keep this in mind. Other than this, the interface is user-friendly and even though the game is very overwhelming, you can find things by yourself. For the time I’ve played I haven’t encountered any major bugs or crashes.
Addictiveness: I give Vikings War of Clans a rating of 8 out of 10 for its addictiveness. Like any strategy game that respects itself, this title can be really addictive if you have who to play with. There are dozens of things to do while waiting for buildings to finish constructing or quests to be completed and that’s what a game basically needs. The alliance system that is implemented looks good and the developers made a promise of focusing the game around this. You have daily rewards, you have a lot of resources, you have special events and you have enemies to crush…why aren’t you already in the game?
Overall, Vikings: War of Clans gets a rating of 7.4 out of 10. If someone can erase the stain of plagiarism (is this even an expression?) this game has, you may be surprised to find a really solid game with great potential.
