The Walking Dead Season One Background

The story shortly introduces players to the main character, Lee Everett, who is about to be sent off to prison in a police car, after allegedly murdering a senator who has slept with his wife. As the car moves through the interstate, you are allowed to make small talk with the officer, who is curious about your situation. Soon everything turns to worse though, as a person acting weird walks in front of the car, causing it to crash and fall into the nearby forest area. As Lee slowly gets out of the totaled car, he notices the dead officer, who doesn’t stay that way for long.

He soon faces with a new fear: the walking dead. The police officer is reanimated into a walker and tries to kill Lee, but he uses the officer’s shotgun to take care of the threat. Still shocked, he climbs into the nearest backyard of a house, before more of the dead could reach him. There he meets the little girl Clementine, left along in her house, as her parents haven’t returned in weeks from Savannah. Lee promises Clementine that he will look after her until they can find her parents. After a night spent in the safety of Clem’s treehouse, they move on from the neighbourhood and the story truly takes off.

A huge characteristic of any The Walking Dead media is the heavy inclusion of a storyline. This is not different in this game either, therefore we will not spoil more of the story. For the uninitiated, this title is best described as an interactive movie. The gameplay is spread over three different types of interaction levels, all of which carry on the story.

The first and most heavily used gameplay element in The Walking Dead Season 1 are the movie-like parts, where the game is played by itself, almost like a movie, without you having to control Lee. These parts include a lot of conversation between characters and as you are in control of the main character, you get to choose his words. Anytime you converse with a person, you have three choices to choose your answers from, and the choice to remain silent. Depending on how you speak with various important characters, they will react to you differently and will either like you more or less.

The game also has main choices to be made, which can decide the outcome of a part of the story, such as whether you want to shoot a person turning into a walker, or just leave them there without doing anything. Depending on what you choose, the story might change in some way.

The secondary gameplay element is the quick time event mechanic, which can happen at any time as you explore the world. These can be anything, like to open a door you would have to tap on the indicator on the door knob, or you might be attacked by walkers and indicators appear on their heads to hit them and fight them off. At other times you might have to repeatedly tap the indicator on bottom of the screen, or swipe in a direction to complete an action.

The third and most heavily interactive element in The Walking Dead Season 1 are the parts where you get free control of Lee, and you can move around an area. You can look at all kinds of items and points of interests in these sections, choose to talk to characters and find things that are required to progress. During these sections you also have options to choose the outcome of a story bit, for example you might have to divide food between survivors of your group, but there is not enough for everyone. If someone doesn’t get any, they might like you less from then on and might be less helpful.

Combining the movie-like storytelling, the puzzles where you have to find required items and the quick time events, The Walking Dead Season 1 provides a heavily story driven experience, where players still get freedom. Your choices matter, so always choose your words accordingly and decide main events with the knowledge that things might turn out for the worse at any moment!

Keep in mind that the game is made up of 5 episodes, of which the first is the only one that can be played for free. Episodes 2-5 have to be bought with real money to continue the story. You have the option to purchase episodes separately for $4.99, or buy all four remaining for $14.99. There is also a bonus episode named The Walking Dead: 400 Days, which can also be bought along with the four basic episodes for the price of $19.99.

Cheats & Tips for The Walking Dead Season 1

The Walking Dead Season 1 is a heavily story driven game, without any real difficulty, except for the difficult decisions you have to make at times. Still, episodes 2-5 can be a little costy, so you might want to find some cheats to unlock those for free? Let me tell you about your options in regards to these cheats, and also give you some tips and hints for the gameplay!

The first thing any player new to Telltale’s games should realize is that you choices are not entirely final in your current playthrough. If you play the whole game in one sitting, then you won’t be able to change your choices and you will have to live with them. But if you feel extremely disappointed with a choice, then you can restart sections of the episode and play it again to possibly change the outcome. Did one of your favorite characters die? Just go back and try to save him or her with a different choice!

Another useful tip to remember is that during quick time events you don’t have time to think much. As the screen gets more and more red, that means you will fail the event soon, if you don’t act. If a walker is about to bite into Lee’s throat, you better do something before it’s too late! Same goes for conversations, as your responses will disappear after a short time, so you can’t keep thinking forever!

The Walking Dead Season 1 Review

The Walking Dead Season 1 has been awarded numerous Game of the Year awards, but definitely not without a reason. I have played the game on the PC before, so comparing these versions seemed to be a good idea!

The first difference between the two versions I noticed was a revamped main menu. It’s much more simplified, with less options, but still retaining the most important ones, such as subtitles and indicators that can be turned on and off.

As for the story itself, obviously it stays the exactly the same as in the original version. Gameplay elements such as the quick time events, the interaction icons and the conversation choices are resized and somewhat differently designed to fit the small screen of smartphones, but all of them are easy to learn and use. Only the walking around was somewhat tricky to do, as it seemed to be buggy at times, not moving Lee to the exact position I wanted to. The game seems to use an invisible stick on the left side of the screen for movement, which might not be obvious at first.

As a conclusion, The Walking Dead Season 1 is a great port to mobile platforms for 2016, which keeps the exact same thrill of emotions as the original. Does it worth it to unlock the full episodes after the free trial? If you love the world of The Walking Dead and stories that might kill off positive characters in your group at short notice, then definitely!

Ratings

Artwork: For its artwork, The Walking Dead Season 1 gets a 8/10. While the game looks a little worse than the original PC version, it still retains its charm. The cell shaded design makes the game look somewhat like a comic book, yet still remain true to its dark and ruthless world.

Music & SFX: The music and SFX gets an 8/10 as well. This game is full of amazing musical tracks, some of which is dramatic, while others are calm or packed with action. The SFX are also mostly realistic, and there is a lot of it. Be it background nature noises, weapon sounds or walker grunts, the game has it perfected.

Story & Originality: The story and originality of the game deserves a 9/10. This title is entirely true to The Walking Dead legacy, with a gripping, exciting tale to be told. As you meet new characters and form a group, both issues and forms of happiness arise. Will Lee and Clementine survive the apocalypse and find solace? Whatever happens to them, the storytelling will no doubt have anyone on their toes.

General Gameplay: I give the general gameplay of The Walking Dead Season 1 a 8/10. The gameplay mechanics might be somewhat weird for a new player, but it’s not hard to get used to. Even when the game is playing scenes by itself, players should still keep an eye out, as something unexpected might happen at any time, or they might miss out on a conversation that could have been reacted to. The quick time events are also not too hard, although controlling Lee in free walking sections can be a little buggy.

Addictiveness: The addictiveness of the game gets an 8/10. Each episode can last up to 2-3 hours, so this game no doubt provides a long lasting tale. As the story is heavily reliant on all episodes being available, playing only the first one will surely leave you wishing for more. It’s definitely worth it to purchase the remaining ones though, especially if you liked the first episode.

Overall Score: 8/10.
