Don’t Waste Time On High-Level Charging: When you play Evolve: Hunters Quest, you will begin to notice that you have high-level skills your hunter can use, which is typically level 3 and beyond. One bad thing about these high-level hunter skills is that it takes forever for the skills to charge up. Sometimes you might find that there is a hunter who has special high-level skills that are really rare or worth the wait, but most of the time the higher-level skills really aren’t going to make that much of a difference. So when you are about to engage in battle or basically do anything within the game, you want to just use the lower-level skills as often as you can, as opposed to sitting there waiting for these higher-level special skills to charge up. You will lose a lot of time if you have to wait for the higher skills to charge up, which not only means it delays your game time, but it can also be detrimental during a fight. Anything past level 3 is just not worth it as far as charging up the skills for your hunter, although you can try it out to see just how long it takes to charge up, and then see if it’s really that much more powerful than the lower-level skills if you use them more frequently.
Use the Medic’s Healing Abilities During Battle: When you are engaged in battle, you want to make sure that you are using the medic’s healing abilities early and often. You need to make sure that the healing energy bars are filling up during the battle, especially if you are engaged in a battle where there are multiple rounds. You will really need to utilize the medic’s healing abilities during later rounds of the battles, especially as you progress to the more difficult enemies. You want to always make sure the energy bars are filling up regularly so that you can use them on your different hunters during the battle.
Use Your Level 1 Taunting Ability During Battle: You might think that having level 1 skills won’t help you during the battles later on in the game, but this is not true at all. You really want to start using the level 1 taunting ability during battle, because you can help protect your hunters who are injured during battle by using this skill. What happens is that you will be able to take the focus off of your injured hunter and onto the hunter that is taunting, which can help protect your hunter and keep them from dying or being critically hit during a battle. The level 1 taunting ability also does a lot of damage to your opponent, so you are essentially killing two birds with one stone by taunting and protecting your hunter plus being able to do a lot of damage to your enemy as well.
Using Special Abilities Does Not Count as a Turn: One of the really cool aspects of Evolve: Hunters Quest is that your hunters all have special abilities, which can really help during battles, and even more so in the later battles within the game. The interesting thing about the special abilities is that they don’t count as your turn during a battle, which means you can use your special ability to attack the enemy, and then still be able to attack them regularly, so it’s like you get 2 turns with 1. If you build up the energy bars on all of your hunters, you can basically just start going through and using all of the special skills on the hunters one after another, so you are inflicting massive damage on your opponent without even using a turn. If you can hit your opponent consecutively with the hunter’s special skills, you will find yourself beating the enemies quicker without suffering that much damage yourself.
Try to Match 3 Bullet Tokens At Once For an Epic Attack: In this game you will get bullet tokens, which will appear on the board just like the regular tokens will. You need to try to match up 3 of the bullet tokens because matching 3 of these bullets will make all of your hunters attack the enemy at the same time. This is a great way to pull off a very powerful attack without needing special skills or having to take multiple turns. Getting all of your hunters to do one attack together at the same time really will help you during the difficult battles, and it’s kind of like multiplying the damage to however many hunters you are using. For example, if you are using 3 hunters and you do this trick, you will hit the enemy 3 times as hard because all 3 of your hunters will be going after the enemy in one turn. It’s like one big assault wave coming at your enemy. The only downside to this approach is that you will not get a charge on your special attack meter, but in this case, you aren’t needing to use the meter to pull this off anyways, so it works out.
Tap On The Enemy So Your Hunters Focus On That Target: When you are about to engage in a battle, you want to make sure you know that you can tap on that enemy to get all your hunters to attack that one character. You might think that your hunter will just go after one of the enemy targets on the board without having any way to control who attacks what, but that is not true. If you are dealing with a situation where you know one of the characters you are fighting is quite powerful, it’s a good idea to use this trick to get all of your hunters to only focus on attacking that one powerful creature. You will be able to beat the harder battles by using this technique, since often times you will die at the hands of a stronger opponent that it takes more tries and turns to kill. It’s basically working big to small, taking down the most powerful opponent to then work your way down to the little guy that you can get rid of in a couple turns. You will also suffer less damage to each of your hunters by getting them all to attack the one so that it dies quickly without attacking your hunters over and over again.
The first thing you will notice when you start up Evolve: Hunters Quest is that you have a very good tutorial, and this will teach you how to move on the game board as well as how each move impacts the monsters and hunters within the game. The tutorial is good for people who are not used to playing match 3 types of puzzle combat and strategy games. Once you get the tutorial done, you will notice that each gem color is tied to a specific hunter class, such as hunter or medic, and you will begin joining up with a team of hunters on planet Shear to fight off various enemies. The team will show up on the top half of the screen, while the gems on the board is on the middle and bottom part of the game. In a way, you will look at this game and think it seems a lot like those gem-matching games, which it kind of is in the concept of you have to move the gems to make different match 3 combinations.
If you match 3 gems, you will find out that the hunter will begin attacking one of the enemies, such as the wildlife in the game. If you come across the medic, you will find out that this hunter both attacks and heals, but you must match at least 3 of the blue crosses for this to happen. If you are matching more than 3 gems at once, you will end up making a bigger hit on the enemy, causing more damage, and this can result in secondary abilities. If you match more than 3, you might notice that besides doing more damage, the hunter can then turn invisible or end up protected from an attack through a shielding process. During each level of the game you will have up to 5 different rounds you will have to compete in, which all contain a variety of monsters that your hungers need to defeat.
One thing you will notice after playing this game for a while is that you will need to know the special abilities of each hunter, because it will become increasingly difficult to beat the monsters without the special abilities. The monsters will get harder and harder to defeat and you will notice that you are not doing as much damage as you once were, so you need to rely on your special abilities to inflict as much damage as possible. When you look up at the characters stats, you will see that there are 3 different bars at the top, which are the special attack energy bars. Each special attack has a bar with some special attacking having more than one bar.
There are two different types of currency used in this game, which are Mastery Points and Credits. The Mastery Points are earned through playing the game and can give you emergency healing power during the battles. The credits are part of the in-app purchases you can make and are used to get boosts that can be used throughout an entire mission. The mission-long boosts can help you withstand damage on your entire hunter team, which means you have a better chance of winning the harder battles. One very questionable thing about all of this is that there is so much persuasion to get you to purchase the in-app items and by that I mean that you will end up spending a lot of your Mastery Points to get you through the battles. They seem to make this game very difficult and make it so that you need the Mastery Points and the Credits to beat the monsters in battle, which is kind of not fair or right. To add to that, since this is a companion app, if you have the game on your console, you can earn points and credits that way and use it on the app, so there is no need to actually go through and purchase anything, unless you don’t have the Evolve game for your console.
Overall this game is just okay, obviously matching the gems and battling the various monsters is fun, and so is using the special abilities. You won’t find yourself playing this game that much though due to how difficult it is and mix that in with the endless push to get you to purchase the in-app items, and you have a sometimes irritating and frustrating type of game. This app works well as it’s supposed to, meaning as a companion app for the actual game, but it’s nice too if you just want to play this for a few hours here and there. You won’t be blown away with the graphics but they are fairly well done, although sometimes the gems and bullets look a little blurry. If you are waiting to get the Evolve game, then you will have more fun with this since you will be using it as a way to help guide you through the console version and get a feel for the monsters.
Gameplay: When it comes to gameplay, this is a fairly alright game, with the 100 different missions and the various wildlife in the Bestiary. You will find it’s pretty complex and complicated as you progress through the game, so you will become frustrated over the endless persuasion to purchase the in-app items. Even just getting through the first chapter in the game is difficult, so you won’t find this to be a relaxing and enjoyable gameplay once you realize what the developer is trying to do. The battles are fun though and the special abilities make it even more fun, but it won’t blow you away, so it gets a 7/10 on gameplay.
Music: The music in this game is rather boring and dull, but mostly annoying because you hear each of the monsters repeating the same words over and over again. The music will irritate you and you will find it to be more distracting than helpful. If the monsters did not talk or say the same things during each round and battle, it would be more enjoyable to listen to. As it stands now, you just want to mute the sounds so you don’t have to hear them repeating themselves for hours on end. The music in this game gets a 2/10 because it’s just super annoying.
Graphics: Graphics in this game can be pretty detailed and intense, however sometimes the bullets and gems do seem a little fuzzy and not as clear as you would think it could be. The overall graphics aren’t that bad but it would be better if you could see more of the action instead of it seeming like a split-screen a lot of the time. The battle scenes are done pretty well with detail and you can see the special abilities coming from you and damaging your opponent, so it’s easy to follow what is going on. Graphically not too intense but that is a good thing since it doesn’t hinder gameplay at all, so the graphics gets a 7/10.
Overall: When you think about this game as a stand alone game, you might not be very impressed and you will probably have your fill within a few hours due to the difficulty as you move through the chapters. If you think about this game as a companion app as it really is, then you realize you can earn a lot of things through this game to help you on the console version, as well as earn things on the console to help you during this app version of the game too. You will find that it’s easy to remember the special abilities and they can really help you beat the badder bosses, but also it’s not worth leveling them up over 3 due to how long it takes to charge the bars. It’s a decent game to play when you are bored and it can really help you figure out how to play on the console since you can learn the characters and learn the story. There are over 100 missions but to think that can be completed without using real money to purchase items to help get you there is a bit comical, although it can be done if you are also using the console to achieve those items for free. Definitely a game you want to check out, but probably not a game you will keep on your device, so it gets a 6/10 overall.
