The Cursed Ship Gameplay

The Cursed Ship sends its players on a mysterious journey, guided and narrated by numerous cutscenes. As you first step into the game, you will see the boarding of the Ondine, this highly exclusive ship, that only rich people can afford to buy a ticket to. The ship has disappeared soon after its departure and nobody has heard about it since then. That is until the your character finds a signal that suggests the ship is close.

After reaching the ship’s expected location, your boat gets into a storm and crashes right into the Ondine, and you miraculously end up aboard the lost ship, which is filled with mysterious green mist. You are then contacted by a previous worker of the ship, who seems to be a spirit. She tells us that the ghosts of the ship are in trouble and you have got to help them.

Other than the cutscenes which move the story forward after reaching new locations, most of the gameplay is about finding objects, which then will be used to complete various puzzles. For example you might have to connect the correct wires in a fuse box, or you might need to find missing pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, put them in place, then rearrange the parts. Some of these objects might not be usable in the location you find them, requiring you to move around the place and even return to previously visited places at times.

The Cursed Ship also has moments when a green glow appears, and activating this glow will take you to a hidden object minigame. These minigames work just as you would expect: there is a list at the bottom of the screen, which shows the names of objects that need to be found. Most of these minigames also have a mechanic that is somewhat new, in the form of objects hidden behind or inside other objects, which require a little more thought. Tapping on the correct objects will collect them, and once all are found you get rewarded with an item needed for another puzzle.

The game also has some pretty useful ways to help you out, in the form of a journal and hints. The journal stores all things that happened so far and includes clues such as safe combinations, so you don’t have to go back to the place where you found them. Hints on the other hand are much more direct and don’t require much thought, as they highlight one object that you can interact with on the current location, or show you one of the collectibles in hidden object minigames. You also have the option to simply just skip puzzles, if they are too hard or boring for your taste.

In case you want some more challenge instead, then you can turn on Expert mode, which makes hints available less often, removes a lot of clues and introduces a misstap penalty for hidden object minigames.

Keep in mind though that The Cursed Ship allows for a free trial, then you have to pay $4.99 to unlock the full game. The free part lasts around one hour, if you don’t skip any puzzles and take your time to check each location.

Cheats & Tips for The Cursed Ship

The Cursed Ship might be a challenging game at times, causing many players to get stuck on puzzles, but a lot of them find the paywall to continue even more annoying. Are there cheats to unlock the full content, or tips to not get stuck so often? You ask, and I deliver!

Obviously the first and most helpful thing against getting stuck is the hint system. If you are not the best at these type of games, then I suggest you play Regular mode, which doesn’t punish you and allows to use hints often. You can also skip any number of puzzles in this mode, which is of course cheating, but can save you some headache.

Another useful thing is to pay attention to what your character says when tapping on things in each location. He/she often says what kind of object or action is required to activate something, giving you a clue on what to look for. Also check out your journal, which stores these kind of findings in a convenient way.

The Cursed Ship Review

I have never been too keen on hidden object games and don’t often play puzzle games either, but The Cursed Ship seemed to have a very interesting story for me to like. The mysteries green fog, in which the luxurious ship has disappeared really peaked my interest and made me jump into the game with excitement.

From the first moment I really enjoyed the quality of the game’s cutscenes, as most of them gave off a vibe that a lot of effort went into them. I really appreciated how they told the story using these scenes, while mixing it with the gameplay.

The gameplay turned out to be just as good as these story snippets, with the simple tap controls to activate objects and move between locations. Most of the puzzles and hidden object minigames turned out to be not too hard either, even for me, who is not really used to them. I probably only used the hints three times over the one hour of gameplay I got out of this trial.

As for the story itself, it seemed to have great production value during the trial, as it kept being enticing the whole time. Probably the only weird thing I found were the voice acting in the cutscenes, which wasn’t always on top. Most of the characters I met knew their roles well, but one of them really stood out as just reading his lines and not really impersonating the character. Still, that was a small thing and it didn’t really change my positive opinion of the game at all.

My conclusion is that The Cursed Ship is a great hidden object and puzzle game for 2016, with an exciting story and great production value. The free part is long enough to spend a hour on, but whether you want to pay $4.99 to unlock the full version depends entirely on you. If you are a fan of the genre, then definitely give the trial a look!

Ratings

Artwork: The artwork of The Cursed Ship gets an 8/10. This game is full of beautiful hand drawn locations, backgrounds and characters, most of which also have animated elements. These together create a unique and creepy atmosphere, which is almost unmatchable. The cutscenes are also very well done, almost too good for a mobile game!

Music & SFX: The music and SFX of the game deserves a 9/10. This game had one of the best musical tracks I heard so far, compared to other mobile games. Most tracks are eerie and frightening, but at the same time also welcoming you to go deeper into the creepy corridors of the ship. The SFX are phenomenal as well, be it the little creaks of the ship or the character voices. Top notch quality right there!

Story & Originality: I give the story of The Cursed Ship a rating of 8/10. From what I have seen so far, the story is solid, but I really hope for a surprising ending. The story is told in a very immersive way with the use of crafty cutscenes, interactions with ghostly characters and the remains of the broken ship. Be wary though that if you only play the trial, the story won’t provide closure, just bring up more questions about what’s going on!

General Gameplay: The general gameplay gets an 8/10 as well. The controls are very simple, yet perfect for the type of gameplay The Cursed Ship presents. Most of the puzzles and hidden object minigames are well thought out, with fairly balanced difficulty. The gameplay also well complements the story, without unneccesary additions. This is a perfect trial to introduce someone to the game, and make them wish for more.

Addictiveness: As for the addictiveness of the game, it deserves a 7/10. If you get past all the puzzles and reach the ending point of the trial, you no doubt will want to keep on playing the full version. As for how long the full game is, people say it’s shorter than they expected and can be finished in a few hours. You are free to try the trial and see if it’s worth the $4.99 for you!

Overall Score: 8/10.
