About Blossom Blast Saga

On a first sight, you might expect this game to be a match-3 title, similar to Candy Crush, but you would be wrong to think that. Visually, the colorful, flashy artwork of the game might seem similar, but the gameplay is a little different. Instead of matching three of the same color on a square field, you have to link at least three same colored flowers on a hexagonal playfield, using a limited number of moves.

That doesn’t sound too different though, does it? It actually is though, as linking flowers causes different reactions than you got to expect in match-3 games. Firstly, you can link any number of flowers together, as long as they touch eachother. Secondly, linking three flowers might not always be enough, as a simple link will only advance flowers to their next bloom level, instead of fully blooming them. That might sound a little confusing at first, so let me explain!

Each flower in Blossom Blast Saga starts in a flowerbud form, and making another flower fully bloom next to it will cause it to advance to its second, medium bloom level. This process repeats and the flower moves up to the third, last bloom level, when it’s an almost complete open flower already. Making a full bloom next to it this time will cause it to bloom as well, and also bring all flowers near it to their next bloom level. If you manage to create multiple full blooms next to eachother, it can easily set off a colorful chain reaction of blooming flowers!

Your goal on each level might differ, but making the longest links of flowers will cause the best chain reactions and get you the most points. Blossom Blast Saga also has an indicator on the top of the screen, which will slowly fill up as you move your finger through a link of flowers, showing you the power of that link. There are also two marks on this indicator: the first shows that once you reach the mark, your link will bloom the flower at the end of it. This can usually be reached with a four flower link, or sometimes even just three are enough. The second mark is further down on the indicator, which if reached will mean that you got a link so powerful that it will activate a bloom blast, instantly blooming all flowers nearby.

Now, using these simple gameplay mechanics, you are to beat 160 different levels. These levels might seem similar at times, and vary a lot at other times, but the four different game modes will certainly keep any player interested. The first mode is the Score Mode, which means that you simply have to get up to a score limit to finish the level. The secondary mode is Big Bud Mode, where the level will have a few big buds, each with a number on it. Creating a link and ending it at the big bud will remove a percentage of the bud’s number, based on your link’s strength. Making full blooms next to the big buds will also take off a few numbers. Once the bud reaches zero, it will create a blast to bloom all flowers nearby.

That already sounds interesting, but there is more! The third mode is called Weeds Mode, where the playfield will be filled with weed at set locations, and your job is to get rid of these by making links around the weed. Lastly, there is the Flower Collection Mode, in which your goal is to make links from the requested colors in the correct order to beat the level.

Levels in Blossom Blast Saga will also have other surprises, such as broken pots that block parts of the playfield, forcing  you to destroy them to let flowers fill their space. Another surprise might include greenhouses, which will contain flowers that can’t be used to start a link from, and therefore you have to start linking from outside the greenhouse, and end the link inside to break the glass. With these obstacles and difficulties, each level can be tricky, and making the best or longest links is crucial!

To make your job a little easier, the game has a currency system as well, in the form of gold bars. You start with 50 gold bars, but there are also in-app purchases to get more. The cheapest pack of 10 gold bars costs $1.29, while the most expensive pack of 500 gold bars goes for $49.99. Using gold, you can purchase more moves at the end of a level or get powerups such as the Shovel to destroy glass, break pots and collect flowers.

Blossom Blast Saga integrates Facebook support as well, meaning that you can login to your account to play together with your friends, see them on your map and request help from them. That said, as many Facebook integrated games do, this one also uses the infamous life system, meaning that you lose one life of five per level failure. Once all lives are lost, you can wait 30 minutes per life, spend 12 gold bars to reset it to full, or ask your friends to gift you free lives.

Cheats & Tips for Blossom Blast Saga

Let’s be honest, after playing countless match-3 games and other casual titles similar in design, you get to expect a low income of premium currency, which can easily make you wish for cheats. You are in the right place, if that’s the case, so let me list you a few cheats, and give you some tips on how to make your gaming experience better!

The first and most serious cheats in the game are definitely the extra moves, which you can get in exchange for gold bars once you fail a level. At first it only costs nine bars to get five extra moves, but if you were to fail for a second time, then it will cost 15 for five more moves, but it will also include a free use of the Shovel powerup.

As I mentioned the Shovel, the second best ingame cheats you might want to utilize in Blossom Blast Saga are the powerups. They will undoubtedly give you an unfair advantage, if used at the right moment. Using the Shovel to clear one last remaining weed, or to break one last greenhouse glass to free the right flower can be extremely useful.

Sadly, you can easily run out of gold bars, and for this reason you will definitely need a way to get more. Unfortunately, there is no option to watch ads or complete offers in exchange for free gold bars, and therefore you will want to turn to gold bar cheats.

As for gameplay tips, your first priority should always be to look for the longest possible flower links. Linking as many flowers as possible will not only get you better scores, but will make it easier to get bloom blasts and create chain reactions as well. At other times you will want to take a step back though, and make shorter links, especially if they are connected to a big bud, and the flowers are one link away from a full bloom.

Also keep in mind that each level has a goal that you have to complete, no matter what. You are also limited by moves, so making less useful links will just waste your moves, while maximizing link strength and focusing on your current objective is the best way to go about it. Once you reached your goal, the game will also give you extra water splashes onto remaining flowers, creating instant blooms for end of level bonus points!

Lastly, Blossom Blast Saga lists a few random players as friends, even if you don’t login to Facebook. Using this to your advantage, you can send and request lives from these people, without the need to login to your social media account!

Blossom Blast Saga Review

Being a fan of match-3 games, and constantly hearing about the almost unbelievable success of King’s Candy Crush Saga, I was curious to see Blossom Blast Saga for myself!

Just a few moments after getting into the game, I was already familiar with the whole layout, as this game uses the same design choices as many similar titles on the mobile games market these days. There is a map, where I was able to see all the 160 current levels, decorated with pretty and detailed backgrounds. The game looks surprisingly great, especially when a blooming chain reaction sets off. Watching the falling petals and the sparkly effects is almost mesmerizing.

Looks isn’t everything though, but thankfully the gameplay has something in store as well. Even while the pacing of the game felt pretty similar to match-3 games, the introduction of the hexagonal playfield and the linking mechanic made this somewhat of a fresh experience, covered with familiar design decisions. I found most game mechanics easy to learn and pretty much straightforward, including the challenges and obstacles on levels, as well as the need to watch out for link strength and possible chain reactions.

Levels were fairly challenging as well, with only a small number of easy levels early on. Later levels turned out to be pretty difficult at times, but still manageable with planning and a little bit of luck. There were only a few levels that I had to restart, especially since the free 50 gold bars helped a great deal in purchasing extra moves.

Overall, Blossom Blast Saga is a 2016 game that tries something a little more fresh than the usual, but with its all too familiar artstyle and game design, it might turn people away who are tired of casual match-3s. In case you still love these type of games, just as I do, then definitely give this a try!

Ratings

Artwork: The artwork of Blossom Blast Saga gets a 9/10 from me. While the visuals of the game are very similar to King’s other games, I have to give props for the clean design, the extremely responsible animations and fluid gameplay effects that it uses. This game is a treat for the eyes!

Music & SFX: I give the music and SFX an 8/10. The game feature peaceful, quiet tunes both in the menus and during gameplay, which just completes the relaxing experience the game presents. The SFX are also pretty good, made up of simple chimes and flower pop sounds, which are hard to get tired of hearing.

Story & Originality: The originality of the game gets a 7/10 from me. The overall aesthetic of the game is entirely borrowed from similar titles, which might be a negative for people tired of this genre, but thankfully the gameplay is different enough to make up for it. The linking mechanic is interesting and intuitive enough to enjoy.

General Gameplay: As for the general gameplay of Blossom Blast Saga, I give it an 8/10. Thanks to the fair and accurate difficulty of the game’s levels, it’s an experience that doesn’t feel artifically difficult, and neither does it get boring for a long time. The linking mechanic and the flower chain reaction effects together create a game full of fun moments, perfect to waste your time with!

Addictiveness: For its addictiveness, the game deserves an 8/10 as well. With 160 levels, a lot of different gameplay elements and countless upcoming updates from the developer, this is a truly longlasting game. Just be careful, as it can easily take hours off your hand at a time!

Overall Score: 8/10.
