LEGO DC Superheroes is arcade game developed by the well-known company “The LEGO Group” which has already published successful titles such as LEGO Ninjago Tournament, LEGO Star Wars or LEGO Juniors Create & Cruise (basically anything with LEGO as a starting word in the title). Even though most of the LEGO titles are available on both Android and Apple, LEGO DC Superheroes is an Android exclusive. It has been downloaded for more than 1 million times in 2016 and it has an average rating of 3.9 out of 5 on Google Play. In order to run at optimal parameters, the game requires and Android version of at least 4.0.3 so older devices may not be able to run this title.
In LEGO DC Superheroes you don’t take the role of only one character. You will create a 3-men team from the highest ranks of the Justice League, a team which will brawl with some of the most evil and pesky villains from the DC Universe. The game is arcade and everything will be straight forward – all that counts is fighting.
The game doesn’t require a mandatory sign-up and you should sign-in only if you want to “participate in the online leaderboards” (a message that will pop-up every single time you start LEGO DC Superheroes. I am a “sign-in is a must” person but in this case I don’t feel that it is necessary because there is literally no progress you need to save to ensure no data loss in case of changing the device or uninstalling and then reinstalling the app at a later time.
There aren’t any microtransactions available in LEGO DC Superheroes especially because there isn’t any currency (at this point) available as well. Everything is ‘unlocked’, there aren’t any available upgrades and you can’t buy new characters so this decision isn’t very surprising.

If I am certain of one thing about this world is that there isn’t one person, company, product or service which is considered the best about everyone. There will always be a two faction war. In comics, we talk about Marvel vs DC. I am a fan of both but I can clearly see that DC isn’t so present in other domains such as gaming and I was really intrigued when I encountered LEGO DC Superheroes. Unfortunately, the intrigue turned into total disappointment as soon as I finished the tutorial.
One of the few good things I experienced in LEGO DC Superheroes is probably the fact that all the heroes are playable (they are just 5, hold your horses) right from the beginning. No special limited-only heroes, no hiring for a given amount of time, no nothing. You can play in whatever team set-up you like and that’s a good thing.
Also, I appreciate the fact that there is some sort of team synergy and that even though you play with the weakest characters (from the game point of view, everybody knows that Green Lantern is the best), their combos may still win the brawl. Another interesting thing about this game is the achievement feature. Just make sure you tag them often and don’t let the enemies take you in a corner.
I think it is worth mentioning that LEGO DC Superheroes is an entirely ad-free game and that your gameplay will not be interrupted with any annoying ads. The game doesn’t have any content at all so it’s odd to see that it has achievements (there are 10 of them and you can unlock half in 1 or 2 fights). This may be a hint that LEGO DC Superheroes would be upgraded, at some point, into a proper game.
In the following lines I will explain briefly (even though I have a lot to complain about) what I don’t like about LEGO DC Superheroes or what I would change if given the opportunity. Probably the most disappointing thing I encountered in this game is the absolute lack of content. As I mentioned before, you have only one scenario, only three villains and you will fight them until you get bored.
Where are all the LEGO-specific missions? Where are all the DC heroes and villains? The game barely looks like a demo or an alpha-version of a not-released title. Another big issue with LEGO DC Superheroes is the graphics – LEGO game have their unique artwork style and even though they are not using modern graphic engines, they still look good. In LEGO DC Superheroes that is not the case. Everything seems clunky and unfinished. You can clearly see scattered pixels here and there.
I don’t know why one LEGO game can look so different from the others. You are required to give your credentials in order to participate in the online leaderboards and that’s just about it. You don’t need to save anything because there isn’t any progress to save, you don’t have any daily rewards of any sort and yet the game will keep asking you to login into your account just to see your name in the leaderboards. That’s not how you make new fans, adding additional content which is worth saving progress does.
Overall, LEGO DC Superheroes is a title I would definitely not recommend in 2016. The title may be intriguing and you may want to try the game but it’s your loss of time not mine. Prepare yourself for a pretty big disappointment because when LEGO makes something 99% percent of the time is good. This game, unfortunately, is that 1%.
Ratings
Artwork: LEGO DC Superheroes gets a rating of 6 out of 10 for its artwork. The theme is reflecting the title perfectly – a LEGO reinterpretation of superheroes and villains from the DC Universe. The character design is looking good but that’s basically everything nice-looking about this game.
As I mentioned before, the game taken as a whole looks bad – the environment design is dull and it doesn’t properly “work”, the graphics are old and even the menus are looking weird and anything but user-friendly. The animations effects (which are so funny and appropriate in LEGO games) are also something the developers should not be proud of – clunky and unnatural.
Music & SFX: I give the game a rating of 7 out of 10 for its music and sound effects. LEGO DC Superheroes a title from which you would expect a solid soundtrack. Unfortunately that is not the case. There are just 2 songs (one in the menu area, one while playing) and they aren’t that catchy – there are some generic tracks which aren’t providing any good atmosphere in my opinion (some of you may disagree).
The good thing is that the sound effects are just like they are supposed to be – creating the feeling of a comic book. Grunts, splashes – you name it and the game will have it.
Story/Originality: LEGO DC Superheroes gets a rating of 7 out of 10 at this section. The only reason this title has such a high rating (yes, 7 is high) is because of the potential a proper game like this would have. The DC universe is great and people will always be intrigued by it.
If you take away the potential, you have nothing left. Only a mission, 5 good guys, the same 3 bad guys over and over again. No story, no original elements and no similar elements to other games for that matter. You just can’t decide the authenticity of this title with so little content.
General Gameplay: I give LEGO DC Superheroes a rating of 7 out of 10 for its general gameplay. As you probably have guessed, it is pretty straight forward to play such a short ‘content-less’ game so you will not encounter any problems at all. The controls are decent and there are no hidden mechanics whatsoever. You create a team of 3 superheroes, you fight a team of 3 villains, rinse and repeat until you get bored. For the time I’ve played I haven’t encountered any major bugs (a lot of minor ones though), crashes or freezes.
Addictiveness: LEGO DC Superheroes gets a rating of 5 out of 10 at this section as well. By now, you shouldn’t be surprised by the rather low rating the game gets. The multiplayer ‘implementation’ is a joke because all the interaction with other users will be a leaderboard and nothing more.
There is no character progression whatsoever, there isn’t a final purpose of the game, there isn’t any story, there isn’t any daily reward system, there isn’t nothing. You just fight indefinitely with the same three villains who were unlucky enough to be on that rooftop when your squad arrived.
Overall, LEGO DC Superheroes gets a rating of 6.4 out of 10. Take away the “name power” this game has and you basically remain with nothing. Unfortunately, the future’s not bright. Unless there is a complete start over, this title will never reach the tops.
