Only One is the first game published by Ernest Szoka who is a young Canadian developer. The game is considered to be a Role Playing one and it’s available on both Android and Apple. Only One has been downloaded for more than 3 million times in 2016 and it has an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 on Google Play and 4 and half stars from a maximum of 5 on Apple’s App Store. In order to run at optimal parameters, the user is required to have an Android version of at least 2.3.3, or for Apple, iOS 6.0 or later.
In Only One you take the role of a lonely warrior who has to fight to survive. Your character is placed on a pillar in the sky and he must kill waves of weird looking creatures and enemies with only his sword. I don’t really see the Role Playing elements of the game so think of it as a Brawler or a very basic Hack and Slash.
The game doesn’t require a mandatory sign-up and there aren’t any log-in possibilities even if you want to. If you don’t want to lose your progress you must not change your device or for some reason uninstall and then reinstall the app. The game has 100 levels and you can reach all of them relatively easy so there isn’t a major loss but is for the best to be informed.
Only One is a fairly simple game and I was really surprised when I saw that there are more than a few microtransactions available. You can buy with real money different characters (each of them comes with its own perks). The price for this different characters varies starting from $1.99 for the Valkyrie and going up to $9.99 for The Only One. You can also buy Power which is the game’s currency and which you can later exchange it for Skills and Upgrades. The price for Power depends on the amount you want to buy – $0.99 in exchange of 5,000 and going up to $9.99 for 60,000 Power.

Only One is a game about surviving. In the most harsh brutal conditions. Why are you there and how do you get out are questions that will remain unanswered. You can choose to end your life by jumping of the weird ramp or you can take the sword in your hands and try to kill as many enemies as possible before your tragic demise. Now that I caught your attention, let’s talk about the game’s strong and weak parts.
What I really like about the game (even though officially is called a 2016 RPG) is the fact that it goes straight to action. You don’t have fancy presentations or long boring intro missions – you just get in the arena and fight, no questions asked. I also like that each time you pass 10 levels your game is saved and if you die you can choose where you should start from. The idea of upgrades and abilities is interesting but it should have been developed more thorough.
In addition to this, I would have liked more character progression (stats or something like that) but at the same time, I consider it interesting enough. One of other things I really appreciate about this game is the fact that you can use the environment in your advantage – usually you’re your hero has the honor to fall into the abyss. Here, enemies can and will fall as well (pushed by you or not).
There are also some things I don’t really like about Only One. First of all, I think that the game should have had a multiplayer implementation available. When up to 20 (it can be more, I don’t mind) players are mindlessly fighting on a narrow platform you forget all about graphics, gameplay and story – it is way too much fun to care for something else. Secondly, I believe that the game doesn’t run as smooth as I would have expected.
There are some little but annoying bugs when you hit enemies or when they hit them – sometimes a hit is not really counted as a hit and stuff like that. An update should resolve this pesky persistent problems though. Finally, I am really disappointed by the lack of imagination regarding the weapons design and choice. A sword is boring after some time…where are the axes, flails, spears and so on? Please don’t tell me that the other characters are using them…I demand my weapons on the free character – I am fighting for surviving after all.
Overall, Only One is a game I would most likely don’t recommend. It may be harsh but, as a personal opinion, I don’t consider it as good as the other reviewers are saying. It’s funny and it has a decent uncommon idea behind it but that’s not enough.
Ratings
Artwork: Only One gets a rating of 6 out of 10 for its artwork. Yeah, yeah, I get it. Pixelated games are artistic and nice-looking because they’re more or less retro. I play indies on my PC, that’s true, but in my opinion that is not a good choice for a mobile device. You expect from a 300$ or more mobile device a lot more than a pixelated game.
Everything about Only One is pixelated, the theme is too colorful (a bit weird for a Brawler) and the environment is really boring. I can’t talk much about the character design because even though you have different characters they are basically looking the same. Talking about the quality of the animations would be nonsense – there aren’t any.
Music & SFX: The game gets a rating of 8 out of 10 at this segment. I don’t know if it is pure luck or that the developers have started to focus more on this aspect because in the last 10 reviews or so, the music and the sound effects of the titles were above average. Only One is another living proof that you can have interesting catchy sounds in not-so-good-looking games. There isn’t anything out of the ordinary about the song they decided to use but it does its job properly. The sound effects are a bit dull but they also are more than enough for a game like this.
Story/Originality: Only One gets a rating of 7 out of 10 at this section. The only story the game has to offer is in the description from the market. You start right in the middle of the action and you don’t know how you got there or why. Usually, this kind of games (if they are properly tagged – Only One is NOT an RPG) doesn’t necessarily need a solid story because it focuses on action. However, there are more than a few similar games on the market and besides the pixelated theme which is somewhat original, every other element from Only One can be easily found in a lot of different titles.
General Gameplay: I give Only One a rating of 8 out of 10 for its gameplay. The game “spoil” us with the already trending stick control for the character movement and with a decent user response. You don’t have a tutorial and you don’t need one. After you get your sword you must do all it takes to survive.
The gameplay is straight forward and there aren’t any hidden winning tactics or complicated mechanics that you need to know about. As I mentioned before, I feel like there is a small delay between pressing a button and seeing the action on the screen but that may be just a visual bug (checked on both smartphone and tablet). For the time I’ve played I haven’t encountered any freezes or crashes.
Addictiveness: The game gets a rating of 7 out of 10 for its addictiveness. Only One is a decent, funny-looking game that will probably be played for a few hours but nothing more. It lacks all the elements that are required for a title to be considered addictive. You have some sort of character progression but I would have liked more. You have a daily quest that uses a really interesting implementation (sacrifice or something like that) but it should be more aggressively marketed. Besides the campaign mode, there isn’t anything to do in the game and that can’t be addictive if you ask me.
Overall, Only One gets a rating of 7.2 out of 10. The game is interesting for the fans of the genre but that’s just about it. In my opinion it can’t reach the tops because it lacks too many elements.
