About Death Lab

In each level of the game, your main goal is to kill all enemies, so you can progress towards the next room, aka the next level. In each level, your character is placed on a predetermined spot, from where he will be able to use four types of weapons to destroy unwary enemies standing around. These weapons include the Ricochet gun, grenades, molotov cocktails and a Tesla gun.

The Ricochet gun is your basic weapon, which shoots a single bullet per shot, and depending on upgrades this bullet can bounce off of walls or environmental objects. This fairly precise weapon deals moderate damage, but headshots instantly kill anyone. The grenade and the molotov are throwing weapons, which you can aim just like the gun, but you can also control the power of the throw. While grenades cause a simple explosion, molotovs will break on impact and release flames in multiple directions that can burn enemies or objects. Then there is the devastating Tesla gun, which will kill any type of enemy in a single shot, and can pierce multiple foes. This gun will also ricochet the same way as the basic weapon.

Death Lab also presents level specific missions, to bring tactics into this physics projectile puzzler. Missions will usually state extra requirements, which if you complete will add an extra star to your overall rating. Completing a level without missions awards one star and a small amount of money, while completing one or two missions will award an extra star for each, and also give you at least three times as much money. Missions can be simple, such as “Complete the level with only 3 shots”, but might also be tricky, such as “Kill 5 enemies with one Tesla gun shot”.

The game clearly states that some missions might be impossible to complete until you have the needed upgrades. Yes, there are upgrades in this game, as that’s where you can spend the money gathered on levels. After each finished level, or at any time from the menu, you can access the Shop. Here you can purchase two types of upgrades, the first being ones for the Ricochet gun. These include extra ricochets, extra damage, tracers and shot length. The second type of upgrades are for ammo, and you can purchase extra Ricochet gun ammo, grenades, molotov cocktails or Tesla shots. Each level from then on will let you use more of these ammo types.

The tactics in Death Lab don’t only come into play because of missions though, but also as you can use the environment to your advantage! Most levels will have boxes or walls blocking shots, forcing you to think twice before pulling the trigger, and forcing you to use different weapons at times, such as the molotov to burn the boxes in the way. But there are also deadly environmental weapons found on levels, including acid containers and electric fields, or activatable traps. Shooting at the glass to release acid on enemies, or activating switches to turn on electricity and spiky traps will certainly make levels more fun and convenient to complete!

Enemy types also have to be taken into account though, as basic soldiers might be easy to kill by a headshot, but armored ones will be immune to shots from the front, and will also take less damage from grenades. Mutants are twice as big as regular soldiers, and will take more shots to kill, and molotov cocktails won’t kill them outright either. Once you reach the end of the game, you will also have to fight a boss, but let the details be a surprise!

Death Lab even features achievements, but not your regular boring types, instead they add extra passive gameplay bonuses once you unlock a row of them. For example, completing the Tesla achievements row will award you with the passive bonus of Tesla shots being able to destroy boxes from then on. Or if you finish all the molotov achievements, fire deaths will award double as much money!

Cheats & Tips for Death Lab

We have all been there before, being stuck on a puzzle game, entirely clueless. These are the times when you might feel like looking up cheats to progress. To avoid such experiences and retain the fun, let me help you out with a few cheats and tips for Death Lab!

This is a game where upgrades can make all the difference, and a lot of the missions are impossible to complete, if you don’t have enough upgrades. If you end up stuck, being unable to complete any missions for a while, and barely passing levels, then maybe it’s time to go back to earlier ones! You can retry any levels and complete those missions, which might have been too hard early on.

You will get the same money reward, even if you complete them with more powerful upgrades than it was meant to be done with. If you finish all early levels with three stars, that will certainly add enough money to purchase any of the upgrades required to continue tougher levels.

As for another tip, your best bet to finish each level in the most convenient way, you should spend at least half a minute studying your current level and missions. A mission could ask you to kill 5 enemies with lightning, and there might be a hidden switch under some boxes to turn the lightning on. There are multiple ways to complete each level, but thinking it through and using the environmental weapons will almost always be the perfect solution.

If you have serious troubles killing the end boss, then these cheats might help: The boss is immune to grenades, but Tesla shots can push him around. The level is built in a way that the boss can be pushed into the acid with the Tesla gun, then you can rain molotovs on it to finish it off. If you want to make sure the boss will be a piece of cake, then upgrade Subject 17 accordingly, starting from early levels.

Death Lab Review

Death Lab follows the fundamentals of most projectile based physics puzzlers, but its interesting aesthetics, levels filled with environmental weapons and traps got me curious, that’s for sure!

The tutorial of the game lasts 6 levels, which felt a little long, in my opinion. After being shown all the weapons and the fundamentals of the game, I was left off to figure out the remaining 42 levels on my own. I honestly would have loved to have more levels to play, but 48, including the tutorial is acceptable for a browser based game, I guess.

Anyway, the gameplay itself felt pretty solid, with responsive controls, which is really important in this type of game, where precision matters greatly. The Ricochet gun, while being the most basic weapon, felt really useful throughout the game, especially after I upgraded it multiple times. A shot that ricochets 6 or more times off of walls is not something to be made fun of. The other upgrades were also fairly useful, especially extra molotov cocktails and Tesla shots, which made certain levels way easier.

I found most levels to be balanced and fairly difficult, but trying again a few times could usually get me at least two stars, by completing one mission out of two. I could have tried to complete both, but for most levels it seemed impossible to get both on the same try, therefore requiring at least two successful attempts.

As for the enemy variety, I felt like there could have been more types of enemies introduced, as most levels were filled with basic or armored soldiers, and mutants were rare to see. Thankfully killing them was equally fun, no matter which enemy I faced.

Overall, Death Lab was a fun experience, if a little short. I could easily recommend you try this game, as it can provide a fun hour or two of entertainment, based on how fast you complete levels!

Ratings

Artwork: I give the artwork of Death Lab a 7/10. A fairly basic visual style describes this game, with typical hand-drawn art seen in a lot of browser games. It doesn’t really take away from the experience though, as most of the assets are fairly detailed, and thus easily create the mood for a dangerous facility.

Music & SFX: As for the music and SFX, the game gets an 8/10 as well. The quiet halls of the main menu, only filled with noises of laboratory equipment really got to me. It makes you feel scared and alone, cornered by dangerous soldiers, but once you step into a level, this feeling turns into a fight for survival, with action packed music and impactful SFX. Most weapons sound realistic, especially grenades and molotovs feel almost like they shake your screen!

Story & Originality: The story and originality deserves a 7/10 rating. While the setup for the game is fairly basic, and there are a lot of similar games, the environments and the atmosphere makes this feel like an unique experience. It’s a shame the story wasn’t more long and elaborate, though.

General Gameplay: The general gameplay of Death Lab gets an 8/10 from me. Probably the only thing I can complain about here is how short this game is, as there are only 42 real levels. Other than that, the gameplay is highly enjoyable, and requires tactical thinking to complete levels in the most perfect way. The introduction of environmental weapons and objects, as well as the mission system makes this even better!

Addictiveness: Regarding the addictiveness of the game, I give it a 6/10. While this is an entertaining game, the long lasting appeal is not really there. Once you complete all levels, there won’t be much else to do. You might also have to go back to earlier levels, if you get stuck, which can feel grindy and take away some of your enjoyment.

Overall Score: 7/10.
