Raw materialsIf you're looking for the materials that are used in the crafting or smelting recipes on the other pages, you'll often need to find those resources in the wild.
The list below will help you find those naturally occurring materials in your randomly generated
Minecraft world.
MaterialDescriptionClay balls - found in sand and sometimes underwater. Best harvested with a shovel
Cobblestone - dig down into the earth. A pickaxe is needed to harvest cobblestone
Sand - very common material, found by water
Snowball - use a shovel on snow to make snowballs
Wood - punch trees to collect wood. Comes in many varieties, but they can be used interchangeably while crafting
Wool - use shears on sheep to obtain wool. It can be dyed to make different colours
Feather - use any tool or weapon to kill a chicken to produce feathers
Flint - sometimes produced when mining into gravel
Bone - skeletons sometimes drop these when killed
String - spiders drop these when killed
Dandelion - natural flowers that blossom randomly throughout the world
Gold ore - found deep beneath the ground. Requires an iron pickaxe or better to mine
Diamond ore - found deep beneath the ground. Requires an iron pickaxe or better to mine
Iron ore - found beneath the ground. Requires a stone pickaxe or better to mine
Lapis ore - rare material, found deep beneath the ground. Requires an iron pickaxe or better to mine
Coal - mined from coal ore blocks
Sugar cane - natural plant, found throughout the world
Seeds - sometimes appear when you tap once on the ground with the hoe
Wheat - use hoe on the ground to till the land. Plant seeds and then wait for wheat to grow. Use hoe to collect
Raw beef - kill a cow
Raw chicken - kill a chicken
Raw pork - kill a pig
Red mushroom - found randomly in the world
Brown mushroom - found randomly in the world
Gunpowder - kill a creeper before it explodes (bow and arrow is a good strategy)
Black wool - kill a black sheep
Melon seeds - harvest a melon in the jungle biome
Melon - plant melon seeds in farmland
Pumpkin seeds - harvest a pumpkin stem
Pumpkin - plant pumpkin seeds in farmland
Beetroot seeds - till grass blocks with a hoe
Beetroot - plant beetroot seeds in farmland
Carrot - found in villages
Potato - found in villages
Egg - dropped by chickens
Ink sac - found in blacksmith chests in villages
Milk - use a bucket on a cow
Glowstone dust - break Glowstone Clusters in The Nether
Leather - cows drop this when killed. Used to make books
Apple - found in some trees
Raw fish - caught while fishing
Raw salmon - caught while fishing
Clown fish - caught while fishing, restores hunger
Pufferfish - caught while fishing, causes poison
Rotten flesh - dropped by zombies, causes hunger
Poisonous potato - sometimes found when harvesting potato crops, causes poison

Blaze rod - dropped by Blazes in The Nether
