Welcome to the unofficial guide to, in my opinion, the best game from the Harry Potter series so far: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The guide is divided into two big parts: the encyclopedia and the walkthrough. In encyclopedia you will find detailed information which help you to achieve 100% in game stats. The walkthrough is just a walkthrough. :) As always, I insist on using the guide only when you're in big trouble - the game is not too hard and the only thing that may cause more trouble is finding all the details and solving some more difficult riddles. Enjoy!
Unlocking all the secrets takes some time. There are tons of details which sometimes can be found very easily, but other times cannot. The Discovery Points are hidden literally everywhere, so do not hesitate to use all the items that seem to have some potential (they pulse when you check how many percent of the points you've found in certain area). Remember that you'll also be able to walk around the Hogwarts and collect points and other stuff in the Endless Day mode, after finishing the main storyline. In this encyclopedia you will find hundreds of tips that will help you to find most of items, NPCs or anything required to achieve full success.
Before you start: I tried to mark locations on maps quite precisely. When you look for something, try to explore nearby corridors, to find out exactly where you are - your position on the Marauder's Map isn't marked that precisely.
The Discovery Points are a bit similar to experience points from role-playing games. Collecting more Discovery Points provides more powerful spells (actually, I didn't notice anything has changed). Also, you can collect them whenever you want to. However, the main question is: how to find them?
The main rule is simple: you have to stick your nose anywhere you can (and also where you cannot). Talk to the paintings, cast various spells on highlighting items (sometimes you have to repeat it few times!), light the torches, clean up, etc. Pressing C on your keyboard might be helpful too - you will see how many percent of the points you've found in certain area and the items which have to be used in order to gather more points (they pulse in this view).
Movies, pictures and other stuff are another reward for collecting Discovery Points. You can check them out in the Reward Room. Next movies are unlocked after collecting 70, 230, 400, 590, 800, 1040, 1320, 1630, 2000, 2420, 2930, 3540 and 4360 points. (By the way, there's nothing interesting in the last one. :)
There are also many other ways to gain some points...
Hogwarts is a bit devastated. You can get additional Discovery Points for cleaning up the mess in 66 places. This is quite a number, but these places can be easily recognized. Here are tips about cleaning and two maps with marked places to clean.
When you see puddle on the floor, look around for a mop. Cast Wingardium Leviosa on it and hold it for a few seconds over the puddle.
There are 5 (how about Thestrals? And snitch?!) flying creatures in Hogwarts. Places where you may find them are shown on the map below.
Note to number 3: in order to see those birds, you need to climb a bit down. Climb up the wall and look for a descent (north-west side). You'll get an additional hint where to look for them after lighting all the torches on the bridge.
Two things about Wizard plaques: you always have to cast right spell on the place with plaques and you always have to exam them (Enter). When there's some kind of cup under plaques, cast Incendio, and the cup will become a lamp so you can take a closer look at the plaques. In other cases look for distinguishing fragments of wall and cast Accio on them.
That kind of highlight means "cast Accio on me".
Honestly, I'm not a good gobstone player. Without any power meter you play on a hunch. There are 3 variants of playing gobstones: classic (knock 7 gobstones out of the circle before your opponent does - that's the one that caused me plenty of trouble, my advice: don't hit the gobstones with first snap, let your opponent do that), jack stone (after four snaps your gobstone must be the one closest to the jack) and snake pit (similar to jack stone, however instead of jack there's a hole in the floor). In order to beat a player you have to win 3 times. Players' locations are shown on a map below.
There are 2 variants of Exploding Snap. The first one is quite simple, however it requires some reflex, especially when you want to get higher score. The rules are simple: when you see two identical pictures, hit the right button - one point is yours. You have to score proper amount of points in order to win the game. The hard part is, the cards shuffle faster and faster. The second one is a bit harder (I'd even say it requires some luck to win). It's a variation on memory game. You have 20 cards and you reveal them in pairs. You have to find two identical pictures. Cards explode soon after you reveal them for first time (of course, if you don't find a pair before). There're only 2 Exploding Snap players in Hogwarts. Their locations are marked below.
Some of the portraits in Hogwarts hide secret passages which you can access after completing small tasks. Admittedly you don't get any points for opening these passages, however they can really shorten your travels around Hogwarts. Here's the list of them with tasks. Warning: there are a few portraits which you won't be able to speak with until some time later.
Wizard chess statues are hidden behind large curtains (most of them) or behind spiders web (only a few of them). You can pull back the curtains by casting Wingardium Leviosa. Webs need to be burnt by Incendio.
Brothers have hidden twelve packages containing fireworks in Hogwarts. Here are their locations.
Note to number 1: look for it outside the tower, on one of shelves around it - the bird will knock it down to the ground.
Note to Hagrid's Hut neighborhood: most of the packages in this area are hidden in plants. Cast Accio on them.
There're plenty of packages in that kind of plants. Just use Accio.Note to number 10: you'll probably find this package during Colin Creevey's task. It's on one of shelves.
Note to number 12: the package is behind the bookshelf in first room of the library - move it with Depulso.
Insignias are hidden in groups of four on three Hogwarts' courtyards. By the way, it's worth to solve the riddles bound to them, because they're worth lots of points - I strongly recommend visiting the "Common items and harder riddles" section!
You can meet 4 ghosts in the game. Three of them can be found after hanging up their portraits on walls (use Wingardium Leviosa), one - Nearly Headless Nick - will meet you during the game (however, you also can hang up his portrait - number 2 on the map).
OK, I admit in terms of chess I'm a newbie. That's why I have no idea what I should write here. Google seems to be the best idea - because where, if not there? There're only 3 opponents and you ought to play them in proper order (meaning the next two won't want to play you until you beat the first one). Look for them...
There're only 3 animal footprints to find, all of them in the neighborhood of Hagrid's Hut. You just have to look carefully.
Before you start, remember:
All you have to do here is to watch all the cut-scenes and wave the wand to cast Expecto Patronum when the Dementors arrive.
Before you begin your main mission, you have to start from basics. Visit at Grimmauld Place 12 is kind of tutorial how to use your wand. First spells are Accio and Depulso. After short training, you'll have to move the furniture towards one of the walls.
In next room you'll meet Hermione and learn new spell: Reparo. Cast it on all broken objects in the room to move along.
It's time for meet-up with Ron and learning Wingardium Leviosa. Moving various objects isn't that hard after all, because the game helps to put items in right places. Move all Ron's things into his chest by using this spell.
After a few cut-scenes you'll appear at Hogwarts. Come up to standing nearby Fred and George to talk to them. You'll learn how to use Marauder's Map (aka The Most Useful Item In The Game). The map will give you a hint how to reach Hermione, who is waiting at Gryffindor Common Room. You'll run into Cho on your way.
It turns out Ron has some trouble with memory. You need to find someone from Gryffindor. Just look around. Then talk to Fat Lady. Hermione is waiting inside.
According to Hermione's instructions, use one of move spells (Accio/Depulso) to see the other side of the board. You'll find out what Discovery Points are. Examine the board and follow the map to Defence Against the Dark Arts. You'll run into Moaning Myrtle next to Reward Room.
On the bridge you'll meet Neville surrounded by bullies, but no fight this time. All you have to do is point your wand at them. Nothing more will disturb you on your way to classroom.
Fred and George are your next target. Just follow the map. Brothers will introduce two new offensive spells to you: Expelliarmus and Stupefy.
Right after finishing a short training you'll meet a student looking for a fight - this is going to be your first duel. The game tells you what to do. Start with Stupefy, then Expelliarmus (however, I prefer mass Expelliarmus).
The next step is going to the library. Use the map to find the shortest way. Hermione will suggest using the secret passage behind one of the portraits on 2nd floor - why not? The thing is, the portrait requires a password, or - more precisely - information about Rowena Ravenclaw. You may follow the map - you'll reach library, but you also can simply ask one of Ravenclaw students for the information you need and use the passage.
Sooner or later, you'll reach the library. Over there, you have to find a way to pick up the necessary book. In order to do this, cast Wingardium Leviosa on a table nearby, move it towards the bookcase and climb onto it.
Unfortunately, the book will fly away. You'll have to move the table again and again (2 times more).
Your next target is the Moaning Myrtle's Bathroom. You'll learn a new spell there - Incendio. Light up all the torches around.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to tour Hogsmeade. You land up in Gryffindor Common Room with task of finding Neville. Just use reliable Marauder's Map. When you reach him, you'll have to use Incendio to burn plant blocking the passage (a few times). Then follow Neville to the 7th floor.
After a few cut-scenes, you'll learn a new spell - Protego.
From now on you're free - you'll get a list of tasks to complete in any order. All of them focus on getting members of Dumbledore's Army to Room of Requirement.
Angelina has been imprisoned in the trophy room. Move the throne away from the door (Wingardium Leviosa).
Plenty of steps lower you'll find Angelina in the middle of big mess. You ought to clean this up all by yourself. Start from setting trophies on right pedestals (colors ought to match). Use Wingardium Leviosa.
When all the trophies are on pedestals, cast Reparo on each pedestal. That's all.
This task reminds chasing the flying book from library, however, it's a bit longer. All you have to do is move around the owlery and follow the running owl higher and higher...:) Sometimes you'll have to use Reparo to reach the owl. Turns out Harry is almost as agile as Lara!
Typical arcade task. You need to climb up to the roof to get Colin's camera. (Damn they have good throwers in Slytherin.) Start from moving one of stone benches (Wingardium Leviosa) towards the wall to climb up the first shelf.
Burn the plant which blocks your way and continue journey up to the roof. Use shelves and gutters. (It's highly probable you'll find Fred & George package.)
A bit upper you'll have to use Reparo to fix the gutter and broken shelf. On top use Accio on Colin's camera and then go back down the same way.
Dean wants you to find 5 talking gargoyles. You must have seen them already - they're stone statues of...Some kind of pigs with wings. You can find first one on the same courtyard where Dean is. By the way, apart from talking to them, I'd recommend to cast Incendio on each one (points!).
This is how the gargoyles look like.Another two gargoyles can be found in tower of Defence Against the Dark Arts, right next to stairs leading from the tower to 2nd floor and on the viaduct.
Last two gargoyles are on the balcony (4th floor) and on upper part of the paved courtyard. Speak with Dean again to finish the task.
The title tells it all. Start from collecting Moly plants - they grow in the area near Hagrid's hut and stone circle and are easy to spot.
To get the mandrake root you'll have to go to herbology area. In one of the rooms there's something that can be described as "shaking pot". That's a mandrake. Before you pull it, remember to wear earmuffs.
You have another chance to do some Wingardium Leviosa. Climb up the ladder and then cast mentioned spell on both boats to take off coverings. Now Fred and George will pass you boxes with fireworks one by one. You have to pick them up using Wingardium Leviosa and put them into the boats. Then cast Wingardium Leviosa on boats again to cover them up.
In this task you have to save Fred and George's butts. To do this, go to Gryffindor Boys' Dormitory and take cloak of invisibility from your chest. From now on instead of three people you'll move some kind of cloud of magic dust that leaves six footprints.
Go to the tower of Defence Against the Dark Arts. You'll have to distract two students somehow in order to get into Umbridge's office. Make use of two vases on the desk - run near the desk to make them fall down. Students will try to repair them and you'll be able to sneak into the office. There's a bottle inside. Take it and get out. When you leave DAtDA classroom, you'll be automagically moved to Gryffindor Boys' Dormitory. Take off the invisibility cloak and speak with Ginny.
Hannah won't go to the DA meeting unless you find a secret passage for her. It's quite simple actually - on my map it's portrait number 10 (look in portraits section) and it's near Hannah. His "owner" won't be troublesome - all you'll have to do is talk to him. You'll get the password immediately. Get back to Hannah with this message.
To feed those cute creatures, you need to move the food to upper ground level (the exact place is shown after talking to Luna). You can do this with a little help of Wingardium Leviosa. The right place is too far for just one spell cast - you have to move the food step by step. Before you break the spell, always put it behind rocks, so it doesn't roll down.
Very schematic task. Speak with sisters, then go to the tower of Divination where you'll meet them again. Talk to them again, and...That's all.
You need to find Anthony Goldstein, Michael Corner and Terry Boot. Since they aren't hidden anywhere, the word "find" isn't too appropriate. Just use Marauder's Map and run for a while.
This is going to be your first more serious fight. Quite easy, because you have support of your friends. To start it, point your wand at Crabbe and Goyle. How to win the fight? I'd recommend combination of Protego and Expelliarmus.
Zacharias needs a few items which can be found around Hogwarts. First one is just a few steps ahead - it's a book about monsters. It's quite easy to spot. :) When you bring it to Zacharias, he'll ask you to get a potion from hospital wing - go there.
One more thing - Zacharias needs information when Nearly Headless Nick died. The ghost should appear very soon.
You can follow the story or do some teacher tasks. I describe these tasks later, for now let's move on.
When you gather all DA members in Room of Requirement, you'll be able to learn 3 new spells (actually, you'll be able to do it even earlier, after finishing Ginny's, Colin's and Zacharias' tasks). In the end, last spell opportunity will appear (Cho's task).
Short episode in Hogwarts by night. Go to Dumbledore's office (head to entrance hall). You'll run into McGonagall eventually.
After cut-scene there's an occlumency minigame. Rules are simple: you have to press cursor opposite to direction that Snape points his wand repeatedly. You have to repeat this a few times to completely throw Snape out of your mind.
Another short interlude. You can visit entire Order of the Phoenix headquarters. If you really need to help someone without any profit, look for a room with Ginny. She'll ask for your help in looking for items hidden by Kreacher. These items are: necklace behind the painting, book on cabinet, music box under another cabinet and sheet of paper on the bookcase. When you want to get back to Hogwarts, speak with Sirius, Mr Weasley and Sirius again.
Ron will suggest you to go to Snape's classroom for another occlumency lesson. The rules haven't changed.
Hermione proposes to go to the Room of Requirement, where entire Dumbledore's Army awaits. Teach them how to cast Expecto Patronum. A few seconds later...
...Malfoy and his pals will break into the room. You must beat them one versus five. :) Even if you win (don't know if this is possible), it won't change a thing. You lost. :)
The next step is going to Hagrid's hut. Malfoy is already there. When you get close, fight will begin.
This time you can win, although result of fight doesn't make much difference again. A few new tasks will appear on your map.
It's time to burn the weird plant outside the Owlery. Colin is the third person required to do it. Do not hesitate to cast Incendio and then find your way inside the Owlery.
When you're inside, Colin will begin to pass packages to you. You have to put them in right places using Wingardium Leviosa. After finishing that part, Colin will tell you Filch is coming and you must find other way to get out the tower. Climb up the stairs and pass through the door. In the room repair broken shelf (Reparo), climb onto it and jump through the window. You shouldn't have any trouble getting down to the ground, it just takes time (Harry is quite slow).
The rebellion is getting serious. Notice three cogs hanging on right side of the clock. You need to take them off (yes, Wingardium Leviosa) and hang on pegs on left side of the clock, but in the right order, so their sizes match (take a closer look at the screen below). There are three more cogs on the top floor. Go there and pass them to Dean using Wingardium Leviosa.
Get back to Dean and put three new cogs in right places (look at image below).
After speaking to Luna, cast Wingardium Leviosa on one of the benches at the courtyard and move it towards the right column (X marks the spot!). Climb up onto the roof and turn left. Repair broken part of the roof and move forward. There's another X on nearby tower. Cast Reducto on it and then cast Wingardium Leviosa on portable swamp hidden in the tower. Move swamp to the courtyard and climb down the roof. Put the swamp on the X mark next to the fountain. Now cast Incendio or Reducto on it and something will happen. :)
You'll have to do the same (well, not exactly the same) with other two courtyards. Let's start with Paved Courtyard. As the cut-scene shows, portable swamp is hidden on the roof. Climb up the stairs to the upper level of courtyard and fix the gutter in corner. Use it to climb higher. You'll have to use shelves and gutters to climb to the right place on the roof. Basically, try to move to the left, unless you can get to the roof itself. When you're there, cast Wingardium Leviosa on the swamp and throw it down to the courtyard. Then, as previously, cast Incendio or Reducto on it.
Transfiguration Courtyard is the last one. You'll meet Ginny there. She'll introduce you. The box is on the tree. When you cast Wingardium Leviosa on it, a few Slytherins will show up, including Crabbe & Goyle. You have to defeat them. It isn't quite hard, besides you have numerical superiority. Standard Expelliarmus & Protego combo should work. If you lose, you'll wake up in hospital wing and will have to fight again. In the end move the box to the right place and cast...You know what. That's all.
If you want to move the story forwards, go to Snape's classroom, where you'll have to win another occlumency minigame. You'll also find out that Fred and George are waiting for you on the 5th floor.
You might have noticed Umbridge is using new speakers to control students. You have to take care of that. After talking to sisters, place two nearby benches under the speaker, climb onto them and pour the potion over it.
Do the same with all 5 remaining speakers. There's no need to write about all of them.
Surprise: you're able to control the twins for a while. Start from using the portable swamp (same way as in Luna's task). Now something more interesting: you have to cast Incendio on nearby boxes of fireworks while flying on a broom. Nothing disturbs you, so you shouldn't have any problems. There are plenty of boxes, but you don't have any time limit. The last, big box is in great hall.
Once you control Harry again, run to the castle. There's a fight between Malfoy supported by his friends and your mates taking place in stone circle. Help your friends to defeat enemies.
Get ready for more fighting. After a few cut-scenes you'll gain control of Sirius fighting against Lucius Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange. As you probably know, result of this fight is predetermined.
A few interludes later you will have to fight Voldemort. This time you control Dumbledore. This duel consists of three stages. First one is a classic fight - all you have to do is to hit Voldemort with all you've got. I highly recommend mass Expelliarmus and Protego, because they're very easy to cast. To embellish it a bit, cast Rictusempra and Stupefy from time to time.
Some time later Voldemort will teleport himself to inaccessible place - this is the second stage of fight. From now on all offensive spells cast by you will be accumulated and released on you. There's only one way to win: cast Protego while spells are flying to hit you. This way they'll be deflected.
You'll recognize third stage by items flying around Voldemort. It's quite similar to first stage, except that you have to cast Protego more frequently.
In the end Voldemort will desperately try to break into Harry's mind. You'll have to win the last occlumency minigame. It's going to be a bit longer than those Snape lessons. Victory ends story mode.
What now? You can do teacher's tasks (if you haven't). There's Luna's task. I'm sure there still are many secrets in Hogwarts which you still haven't found.
In last task you must find five Luna's belongings. Their locations are marked on the map below. Note to number 2: the item is under pile of leaves; sweep them up to uncover the item.
3 out of 4 teacher's tasks consists of two stages: the introduction and the exam. Before you gain access to exam, you'll have to get through the introduction.
The introduction: you need to the book which Hermione needs to finish the charms essay. It's simple: talk to Flitwick, run to Great Hall (you'll find the book there), speak with the schoolgirl, get back to Flitwick.
Girl with the book might look different than the one on the screen, but she'll definitely be in this exact place. The exam: you cast various spells as fast as possible. (You won't pass the exam without Reducto.) There's additional hindrance: Harry don't know which item he should cast the spell on when there're 2 or more items nearby and some spells affect only certain items (for instance, Accio works only for the line near the fireplace and Incendio for wizard plaques). Getting the best degree might take a few tries. For me, the hardest part was casting Reparo on broken plates - Harry, like total idiot, tried to cast spell on a chair or stone bench, but never on the plates. I had to choose the right item manually, but there's a better way: Reparo is always after Reducto, so when you cast Reducto on the plates, you may start casting Reparo even before Flitwick tells you to do it. You'll save some time.
All you have to do in this case is a simple task. Speak with McGonagall, go to the tower of Divination and talk to students over there, get back to McGonagall. Done!
The introduction: to write an essay for professor Sprout, you're going to need Neville's book. You'll find it in Gryffindor Boys' Dormitory.
You might not see it, but the book you're looking for is under the bedside lamp. The exam: use Wingardium Leviosa on each mandrake to move it from broken pot to new one. Do it fast to get the best degree. Remember to use cursors on your keyboard to pick the right target.
The introduction: an essay about moonstone, 12 inches. :) You're going to need two things: a book from library and Hermione. The book is in restricted section, look at the bookshelves on the left side of room.
The exam: the rules are simple. You have to put the right potion into cauldron by using Wingardium Leviosa. You'll recognize which one is right through colors - color of the liquid in cauldron and color of the potion must match. To get the highest degree, you must do it 10 times. Be careful, one wrong move may ruin it all, especially in the end.
