Broken Age guide contains a detailed description of all objectives players have to follow in the game. The walkthrough gives instructions on solving puzzles as well as locations of all in-game items along with helpful screenshots. Since there are two playable characters in the game, the guide is split into two parts. For the sake of clarity, all chapters involving one particular character are arranged in a separate part. Each chapter is split into subheadings, in order to make navigation easier. The walkthrough also contains some general gameplay tips e.g. the controls, switching between characters, as well as instruction how to unlock a secret game option, which Double Fine Studio prepared mainly for old school players. Broken Age is a typical representative of point'n'click adventure games. The game was developed by Tim Schafer - who is well-known to all fans of the genre - and his Double Fine Studio. The game was entirely financed by fans through Kickstarter. Broken Age tells a story of two teenagers, who both stand up against norms which are generally accepted in the society they live in. You really cannot blame Vella for what she does - after all she and four of her female friends were chosen as a sacrificial offering for Mog Chothra, a monster which is regularly served offerings lest it destroyed the entire village. Shay, on the other hand, really wants to break free from an overprotective mother-spacecraft, who keeps controlling his every step. He dreams of great adventures and a little bit of self-reliance, which currently stays out of his reach.

The controls are not very complex
Broken Age has really simple controls, as most adventure games do. You interact with environment by means of left mouse button. ESC button pauses the game and opens inventory menu, while Space button allows you to skip a cut-scene. You may change the controls as you see fit - just click on a particular function, be it Skip Cutscene, and ascribe a new button to it.
You can switch between characters freelyThere are two playable characters in Broken Age. You can switch between them at any moment. To do this, open the inventory menu and click on another character's picture in the right bottom corner of the screen.
Retro Mode activationThere is a secret option in the game, hidden under a curiously-sounding name Retro Mode. To activate this, open graphic options and set 640x480 resolution - you may switch it back to normal right away. Since now, you can find another option in the controls menu. This one is marked by a small picture of the game characters. Ascribe any button to it - I chose V. Next, go back to actual gameplay.
Retro modeOnce you press the button you ascribed to Retro Mode, the graphics turns old school.
There are two playable characters in the game
To start playing as Vella, first you need to wake her up. Just click on her twice, to do this. First click moves you to her world, while the second wakes her up.
Talk to your sisterOnce you are awake, go and talk to your sister. After the conversation, go toward the building with smoke coming out of its chimney. You can see that it is pitch dark inside. Make a few steps forward and light appears. You are welcomed by party guests.
Partying with your familyYour first challenge is to help looking for a special cake knife. Before you do this, talk to your grandmother (see the previous picture) and grandfather, who is sitting on a chair. The conversation can provide some interesting details on the game's story. Back to the knife. To get this, go toward the plate covered with a towel. Once you uncover it, you can see cupcakes - take one.
Grandfather sticks the knife into the tablePress I button to open inventory. Drag cupcake to grandfather. When he asks if the cupcake is for him, suggest that you could split it. Once grandfather cuts the cupcake in half and puts the knife aside, take it from the table. Drag the knife to your mother to start a cut-scene.
Sacrificial ceremony
You get to a river bank, where you are going to be offered as a sacrifice. Talk to each maiden. Once the girl on your right is gone, ask for water. After the conversation, Mog Chothra snatches another victim and you can find your corset in the inventory. Ask the girl on the right for the bottle of water once more. She throws it to you right before she is taken by the beast.
Trade a towel for meatWhen there are only two of you left, offer your friend the water. Once she agrees and gets the bottle, she accidently spills the water on herself. Next, offer her a towel for meat. She agrees for the trade and gets snatched after that.
Cut yourself off from the cakeThe bird who is flying over you is trying to get the piece of meat stuck into the cake. When the bird is near you, drag corset from your inventory to it. When the bird tries to escape, use the knife, to cut yourself off from the cake.
A nest built in clouds
The bird takes you to a strange-looking place resembling a nest. First, talk to the characters standing at a nearby platform. Then, go to the next platform and talk to the lady. When you approach her she gets startled and drops her knife. It turns out that the was making cloud walking shoes, but she cannot do this without a knife.
Talk to the woman who is hanging down from the nestOnce you walk down to the lower level, meet a woman hanging down from the nest. Talk to her and she gives you shoes, which you can use to freely walk around on the clouds. Go up again.
Talk to the girlGo to the right to get to the next location. Once you talk to a girl, she gives you a ladder. Note that the knife you dropped during the flight is stuck on the right.
Use the ladder and take the knifeUse the ladder to get to the knife. Take it and get back to the shoemaker, then drag the knife to her. The grateful lady gives you a pair of shoes in return, however, these are a tad too large for you.
Get to the gold eggThere is a gold egg in the next location. Whenever you try to use the ladder to climb up to the nest, a bird appears and makes it impossible for you to take the egg. To get up there, open the inventory and drag the shoes to the ladder. Use the ladder on the nest. Climb up and take the egg.
Use the ladder to climb up to elevated areasGet back to the main area and use the ladder next to the blue bird. Walk right past it to get to the next location. When you hear yelling, go near the tree, and you fall down.
The guy hanging on the tree is asking you for helpWalk right across the root. You can see someone hanging down a root. Talk to him. He asks you to help him get free from the tree. To do this, go back up and jump to a hole in the cloud. Climb down again to the roots and take the blue egg.
Knock off some fruits of the treeApproach the branch and click on it to knock off fruits.
Take the fruitGo down and take the fruit from the nest. You may now leave this location.
Give the blue egg to the birdGo back to the blue bird and give her the egg. She cuddles it and leave the gold egg be. Take it and go below.
Put an egg in the basketGo to the area on the left. Approach the guard and talk to him. When you ask him if he knows how to leave the clouds, he directs you to Mr. Lightening. To get to him, put one egg in the basket. The blockade by the ladder is removed allowing you to climb up.
Talk to Mr. LighteningMr. Lightening has his nest all the way up the ladder. Talk to him. At some point he drops down a gold egg. After the conversation climb down and pick up the egg. Now you have all three. Place them in three baskets and climb on the ladder. A cut-scene starts.
Take a glass pane from the stained glass window
Walk to the stained glass window. A small glass pane falls off. Go downstairs and talk to the house's host named Curtis.
Take the axe from the wallAfter the conversation, you can take the axe that is hanging on the wall. Also, convince the man to give you the blue art that is hanging on the wall on the left. Take it, then leave the house.
Talk to the treeGo path rightwards until you get to a tree. Use the axe on it. Then talk to the talking tree.
Talk to MarshallFollow the pathway until you get to the location with a bridge. Once you are there, talk to Marshall (1). While talking about his hat, tell him it looks great on him. Then he gives you the bucket hat. Go talk to the maidens, who are going to be served as offerings for Mog Chothra (2).
Ask the guards for the gas containerAfter the conversation with the maidens go upstairs. You need to talk to the guards by the entrance. Ask them to give you the tear gas shooter. This is added to your inventory.
Use the smell of dead fishReturn to the previous location and go toward the shore. Take the driftwood and then use the "weapon" from the guards on the dead fish container. Then use that on the girls who are getting ready for Mog Chothra'a arrival. Take the perfumes, which are standing right next to them. Go back to Marshall and ask him if you may join the Feast. Sadly, he thinks your smell is not right. Use the perfumes on yourself and talk to him again. He is satisfied now.
Hang the bucket on the tree branchGo back to the talking tree, who is now asleep, and use the bucket on it. Hang the bucket on the tree and go to Curtis. Give him the driftwood and he gives you a stool in return. Go back to the talking tree and show the stool to it. The tree gets sick and vomits, thus filling the bucket with sap. You can find it now in your inventory.
Give Marshall the bucketGo to Marshall and give him the bucket. The Feast preparation resumes, since the sap helped to move the construction forward.
Give the fruit to the guardsGo back to the guards. Offer them a fruit for the admittance into the pyramid. After that they let you inside.
Use the Curtuis's artGo to the other side of the room and use the art taken from Curtis's house as shown in the picture. This way you activate the hibernation chamber and wake up a stranger. Talk to him.
Approach the machineApproach the machine and click on the coloured glass. Sadly, it falls down and breaks up. Take away the other pane, which is placed right above where the broken glass used to be.
Place the glass panes in this orderPut the glass pane from Curtis's house in the top gap and the other pane in the lower gap - as depicted above. This way you activate the pyramid. Go back to Marshall. The Maidens Feast begins - so does the final battle of the first chapter.
Aim at the tentacles
Use the weapon you got from the stranger in the pyramid and aim at the monster's tentacles.
Use the ladder to jam the beast's jawAt some point you need to let the monster catch you. While facing him eye to eye, use the ladder on him. Now aim the beam at Mog Chothra's mouth. If you can hit him, the enemy is defeated.
Click on Shay to wake him up
To start playing as Shay you need to wake him up. To do this, double click on him. First click moves you to his world and the second wakes him up.
Eat cerealYour first objective is to eat cereal. Click on a spoon. Then open the inventory and drag spoon to the cereal bowl.
The ship command center
You then get to the command center of the ship. The computer reports about four emergencies you need to address. You can perform the missions at any order, however, I recommend you to do the train mission as the last one.
Ice cream avalancheThe first mission's objective is to help avalanche victims on Galarctica planet. As it turns out, the avalanche is made of ice cream. To save the victims of this tragedy, you need to use the spoon from your inventory on the ice cream avalanche to eat all the ice cream.
Investigate the cause of an emergencyYour next task is to investigate a distress signal. Once you get to the right place, click on the creature standing in the center of the room.
Investigate the foreign bodyAnother objective is to investigate the foreign body on the surface of the ship. Walk toward the object and click on it. Yet another surprise. A present is added to your inventory.
Activate the bridgeNext emergency involves a runaway train. This mission is best done as the last one. To safely get the train to its destination, you need to activate the bridge, which is made by the tongue of a big mountain. Just click on the mountain to do this. You can perform this mission over and over again until you decide not to save the train. To do this, first lower the bridge and raise it up again just as the train is going down the hill. A cut-scene starts.
Take the tank of compressed air
Wake up again. Once you get off the bed, walk toward the console with "Missions Cancelled" message. Take the tank of compressed air.
Use the screwdriver to open the grateWalk a little farther, and use the screwdriver you got from the stranger after the fall of the train. Open the ventilation shaft. Take an item out of it.
Inflate the decoyOpen the inventory menu and use the tank of compressed air on your new finding. You get an inflatable doll.
Put the decoy on the bedApproach the bed and put the inflatable doll on it. Go back to the ventilation shaft and enter inside.
Talk to MarekOnce you get to the lower deck, talk to Marek. He gives you a Talon Nebula Star Chart. Go to the opening in the wall as depicted in the screenshot.
Give the coordinates to the computerThere is a weird computer in the next room. Give it the Talon Nebula Star Chart which you got from Marek. After that, return to the previous room and talk to your new friend again.
Control the ship's armFirst, click on the green flashing light on the control panel. A red outrigger appears on the screen. As soon as it gets directly over the yellow creature, press the red button.
Control the ship's armThe next panel requires you to move the outrigger around to get to the creatures shown on the radar. To do this, press the right arrow and the top arrow once. Next, as soon as the outrigger gets directly over the creature, press the red button.
Hand over the next coordinatesGo to the navigation room and hand over the coordinates to the computer. Go back to Marek.
Control the ship's armAnother control panel. First, press the green button, then the red one as soon as the outrigger gets directly over the creature. Then, press the top and left arrow, and the red button. Double-click the top arrow and then the red button. The right arrow once, the bottom arrow twice, and the red button. The top arrow twice and then the red button.
Another wake-up callYou are in bed again - get up. Walk to the vent shaft and get to the lower deck. Talk to Marek then. After the conversation, you get new coordinates and Omicron Inhibitor. Use the door at the left.
Take the hazard suitGo to the other side of the room and use the opening in the wall. Take the hazard suit laying on the shelf and go to the navigation room.
Use the coordinatesUse the coordinates on the computer. Talk to it. Then use the door at the left.
The control center
In this room you can talk to your Computer-Mother. You can learn some interesting facts during the conversation.
Room exitsApart from the entrance to the room where you came from, there are three other gateways. These are marked on the screenshot with numbers 1, 2, and 3.
Take the knife from the galleyHead to the door number 1. Enter the galley and take the knife from the table.
Teleportation roomWalking through the door number two takes you to a room with three teleports. Use each of these.
Go through this doorHead left and walk through the door shown in the picture. Help one of the friends you made before get patched up. An crochet hook is added to your inventory.
Take away the object stuck in the pipeGo to the room with the ice cream avalanche scene. Go farther inside the room and take the whipped cream gun stuck in a pipe. The avalanche starts over and you have to eat all the ice cream again. Go back to the teleports and use the first one.
The lights over the first and third teleport should be offUse the teleports as many times so the lights over the 1st and the 3rd one went off. When that happens, use the one in the middle.
Put on the helmetYour head had shrunk just enough so you could use your helmet. Put it on and go to the adjacent room.
Put on full suitOnce you get the suit, walk to the next room and go down the screen.
Use the InhibitorYou can see a glowing orb in the next room. Use the Omicron Inhibitor on it. Exit the room. Go back to Marek and talk to him.
Talk to the computerGo to the navigation room and talk to the computer. Use "Fine. Cozy Cluster it is." option. However, you need to set the course manually.
Set the course manuallyTo do this, go down the ladder and use the crochet hook on the panel. To get to your destination target, the embroidery should look just as it is shown in the picture.
Go outsideTalk to Marek. Then, go to the teleportation room and use the third teleport. Go to the right and go outside the ship.
Cut yourself looseOnce you are outside, use the tank of compressed air and the whipped cream gun taken from the pipe in the ice cream avalanche room. Then use the knife on yourself to cut yourself loose from the ship. A cut-scene starts.
Use the knifeYou need to fly to the left. Use the knife on the control panel shown in the picture.
Use the robotNext, use the robot you got as a present on the very same panel. Go back on the ship and talk to Marek.
Control the ship's armOnce again you have to control the ship's arm. First, click on the green headphones button, then, as soon as the outrigger is directly over the creature, click on the robot button.
The end of the first chapterOnce you catch all the creatures, a cut-scene starts.
Take the knife.
After the awakening you will see a knife on the ground. Talk to it couple of times and it will appear in your equipment. Go to the next location.
Approach the breach.Approach the breach. Recover glass orb from it. It will cause the breach to repair itself. Now, approach the pipe and use the knife on it. Getting a piece of the pipe, come to the machine and use the pipe on it. Combine the elements. The next step will be climbing the wall and cutting off the rest of the pipe. Connect it to the machine.
Collect the hand.
While at a zero gravity state, use the glass orb on the hand in order to add it to your equipment. Use the hand to recover the metal shoe. Use the whole set on the big hand which will pull you to itself. Go to the ship's hatch.
Move the obstacleGo further in through the ship and cross the first door. Talk to a robot and move further of this location. Move the obstacle and cross the door leading inside the room which used to have a computer inside.
Approach the door.Go into another room, through the entrance to the left. While inside, press the door shown on the picture. Talk to it and move along.
Examine memorabiliaIn the Shay's bedroom, crawl into the ventilation shaft. Inside, you will see Marek trapped under the ship's elements. Talk to him. Use the door to go into another location. Find the room with the shelves and examine the items put on it and go through the portal.
Return to the door.Return to the closed door. You will have to answer some questions. Then, a woman will open the door and a cutscene will start.
Take the fork.Take the fork from inside the bowl. After pressing the window pane, Marek will reappear. You may talk to him. Put on the helmet which will give you control over the ship. Use it for opening all of the doors and for bringing back the power to the vehicle. Solving the task will result with a cutscene.
Pick up the stone.Use the helmet again. Go to the Shay's bedroom and take the rock from its bed.
Take the doll.After removing the helmet, use the door to the right of a broken window. Take the inflatable Shay from the flipped over table. Exit the kitchen and go to the main room.
Inflate the dollGet to the place with the tones of ice cream. Use the inflatable Shay on the valve in order to inflate it.
Fill the bowl with ice cream,Put on the cloud walking shoes and climb to the place where a toy truck filled with ice cream is located. Use the glass orb on it in order to fill it.
Talk to the conductor.Now go to the room with a roller coaster. Talk to the crying toys and to the conductor.
Roller coasterUse the fake Shay on the train to start the ride. After the ride and being thrown out of the room, use the fork on the remnants of a woollen toy.
Use the bowl on the glowing orb.
Go to the room with the portals and use the middle one. Move further down where the glowing orb is. Use the bowl with ice cream on it. Come back to the teleport. Go to the kitchen and click on the cereal box to make some of them scatter around.
Put the bowl to the container.When the vacuum cleaner will pick up the cereal, go to the door leading to the roller coaster, as fast as you can. When the vacuum cleaner will start picking up the cereals, click on it. The cereals will appear in your EQ. Put the bowl with ice cream to the container by the door.
Remove the rock.Go to the room next to the one with the bookcase with Shay's memorabilia. Use the action button on the loosen tile by the door. Talk to the girls behind the window. After that, scatter some cereals by the door. When the hook appears, take it.
Lure Marek into another room.Use the action button on the wires. Then, go to the room where Marek was lying. Use the action button on the computer and collect the navigation system which should be lying on the ground.
Set the embroidery like this.Go to the room with a navigation robot and talk to it. Use the fork with cotton on it. After the cutscene, give it the navigation system and go downstairs. With the hook, create the embroideries as shown in the picture above. Then, go to the room where Shay's mother awaits you.
Talk to the "orb"
Talk to the man with an orb on his head. Go to another part of the location and talk to Marshall and a woman with a nest. Pick up the toy from the ground.
TalkGo to the cave and talk to the man inside. Then, look at the sheet on the wall. Get out of the cave and go to the man standing by the lake. After the conversation, use the spoon on the brew. After that, proceed to the bridge.
Release of the snakeStay a while by the tree and talk to it. Go to the left, to another tree from which a snake will come down. Release yourself of him and take him with you.
Use the snake on MarshallUse the snake on Marshall who will spit out a shell. Give him a scheme as well, in order to get another item. Use it on the resin by the tree.
Take the letter.Go to the house on the suburbs. Take a missing notice from the letterbox. Go inside the house and talk to the owner. Give him an item which you had used on the resin. The owner will change it for you.
Give the cast to the owner.After conversation, go to the cave. Leave the cast inside. In return you will receive a pencil which should be given to the woman by the lake. In return you will receive a sheet of paper. Return to the hut and climb the ladder to reach the clouds. Talk to the guardian and show him the papers. Proceed according to the instructions.
Exchange the itemsReturn to the village and convince the tree to give you a picture of a fish which is stuck between the tree's branches. Make the tree laugh to make the picture fall. Give it to the woman by the lake to receive a string in return.
Use the string like this.Drag the string from your equipment to the broken toy. Fix it as it is shown on the picture and proceed to the cave. While inside, use the toy on the device to the left to animate it. Use the same toy on another person in this place.
Ask for money
Now, you can return to the Kingdom of Clouds. Talk to the people in this location and proceed to its another part. Talk with the old man and to with the children around the muffins. Return to the old man and ask him for money. You will be given a golden coin with witch you will be able to buy a muffin.
Give the muffinGive the muffin to the people by the shoe store. Return to the old man and give him the rest of the muffin. You will be given his cane in return.
Talk with the "druids"Climb up the ladder and go pass the blue bird. In the location with a huge tree, talk with the characters which used to protect the cave's entrance in the first chapter. Use the cane on them to start a cutscene. When it ends, collect the druids' clothes.
Crack the eggUse the spike on the blue bird's egg. A nestling will hatch out and you will be able to collect the rest of the shell.
New clothes.Climb back down and talk to the Vella's mother. Give a small suit and druid's clothes to the girl dressed in green. In return you will receive another suit. Return to the village.
Take the mixture to the cavedAdd egg shells and fruits to the brew. Take the mixture to the cave to start another cutscene and end this act.
Switch to Vella
The final part will start with a cutscene. When it ends, switch to Vella.
Use this item.Exit the control room and go to the main room of the ship. Use the item shown on the picture above.
Take the radio.Switch back to Shay. Climb down the ladder and approach the opened books. Examine one of them and go through the door to the right. Whilst in the room with instruments, take the radio from the desk. Return to the room with the books and go through the door to the left.
Switch the lever.On the bridge, you will be interrupted by the moving tiles. Return to the ship and give the radio to a dancing toy. Go down and use this thou on the dancing tiles. Take these tiles to the room with instruments and you will be free to pass the bridge. Go to the end of the path and switch the lever.
Set the wires.Set the wires in the toy, as shown in the picture above. Go to the room with instruments and use this toy on a big drum. When the scuffle begins, switch to Vella.
Set the wires again.Go to the room in which Marek used to reside. Use an action button on the computer and proceed to the room with a navigation device. Set the wires as shown on the picture. Climb down the ladder and use a figurine on the layout. Go to the ship's main room and switch characters.
Use the item.Climb up the ladder and use the item as shown on the picture. A cutscene will start. Switch to Vella and use the 'detonator' again. The last cinematic will appear.
