What is a online pass for Battlefield 3

By using a code you will be granted access to online multiplayer to play with other players. Code comes inside of each game and if you have ps3 pc or xbox it has instructions on how to access it. I have ps3 i just went onto PSN click onto redeem code in top right conner typed in my code and downloaded online pass took like 20 seconds.
