Why is your gears of war 3 beta not working

i have the bulletstorm epic addition, and bought the online pass. even thought i got it as a used game and the only pass off the marketplace shouldn't the beta still work.or is the epic addition just a fancy cover with no real meaning unless you buy the game new? all i know is im not playing the beta and now i just have six extra maps for a game that has terrible online.
