Heroes Of The Storm Basic Gameplay Guide

Heroes Of The Storm Basic Gameplay Guide

There’s a new basic gameplay strategy guide for Heroes of the Storm. For gamers asking “How do you play Heroes of the Storm?” and “What is a MOBA?” some of the beginner guides and walkthrough videos will help iron out the basic gameplay and give you an idea of what to expect from Blizzard’s latest MOBA that has recently headed into open beta.

Force Strategy Gaming has one of the more succinct and informative videos for beginners, with a four minute video detailing all the basic gameplay elements. You can check it out below.

As the video notes, this is a basic 5-on-5 MOBA. No last hits and no item shops, opposite of games like Dota 2 and League of Legends.

There are 36 heroes and four main class types to choose from, including a Warrior, Assassin, Support and a Specialist. Each class offers players a distinct play-style, with Warriors working as tanks, Assassins working as DPS, Support being either crowd-controllers or healers and Specialists fulfilling specialized roles on the battlefield.

Replacing the item shops are talents. These talents can be used to upgrade hero skills and eventually unlock their level 10 heroic ability, where players can choose between one of two distinct skills that will make or break a match. It’s equivalent to the ultimate special skills in other MOBAs like Dota 2 or Smite or League of Legends.

Like other games in the free-to-play category, you can unlock new skins for the characters to give them a distinct look either by grinding like a mofo or ponying up real cash and paying for the skins. Each character has a multiple skins and three color variations per skin.

As far as gameplay is concerned, the game plays out just like any other MOBA. Two teams will battle for lane control and there will be two or three lanes per map. There are a total of seven maps in the game at the moment. You can get a look at some of the maps and the layout of each map, the lanes, the towers and the mercenary camps courtesy of YouTuber Spartacus with his seven minute video below.

Careful, it’s an older video so some of the newer maps and tactics aren’t included.

Nevertheless, as explained in both videos above, players will fight for lane control, destroying their opponent’s towers and killing minions while progressing toward the enemy’s main tower.

One of the big changes in Heroes of the Storm as opposed to other MOBAs is that you won’t be selfishly leveling up your character to get strong and curb-stomp opponents… no, you’ll be leveling up your team, so you can leave the Leroy Jenkins or Rambo mentality good and well behind because it won’t get you far in Heroes of the Storm.

You’ll need to level up your team quickly and take mercenary camps to help your team secure victory. Mercenary camps are neutral zones on the map where the team that captures a camp will have the mercenaries work for them and push through the lanes during a fight.

In addition to this, there are objectives that are present in each map. They don’t happen at the start but they will commence throughout a session where players are required to complete the objectives in order to earn a major leg up on opponents. Alternatively, teams can ignore the optional objectives and just keep lane-pushing, although that could result in a team’s defeat especially if one of the objectives is to stop a boss who is tearing through your lane and wrecking your towers.

Heroes of the Storm is currently in open-beta and gamers can sign-up to participate in the game right now. For more information feel free to pay a visit to the official website.
