Live Hold’em Pro has some serious optimisation issues that, at least to me, make the game fall short of its goals. From the get go I was overwhelmed by the ‘Loading . . . Please Wait’ screens, which I soon found out were almost guaranteed to pop up after selecting literally anything from the main menu. There were in game problems too, I found myself sitting out of the round probably the majority of my time spent playing. Live Hold’em Pro has a lag compensation feature where players who don’t respond in time are automatically sat out, until they press the Join Seat button and are forced to buy in again. The problem with this feature is that the app itself just freezes a lot of the time, and these freezes commonly end up making you sit out that round, regardless of whether you bid already. When you get frustrated at a game for not letting you play it (barring the freemium paywall games), it normally comes down to poor programming, and this reeks of bad management decisions all over, from the inconsistent art style to the sparse in game sounds.
I’m sure that not all players out there will find these problems big enough to stop them from playing the game, but whats the point when theres so many other poker games out there that I’m sure you could find one that runs better with a quick five minute search on the app store. Besides that, theres not much else to say. Live Hold’em Pro is definitely no frills poker on your mobile.
Artwork: I give Live Hold’em Pro a 7 out of 10 for Artwork. This is a poker game of course, and Live Hold’em Pro does make itself look the part. The boards look as you would expect, and the menu’s are as unsurprising. It all just looks okay, but never sets itself apart from the slew of other apps out there.
Music and SFX: I give Live Hold’em Pro a 6 out of 10 for Music and SFX. Once again, Live Hold’em Pro has what you would expect, but perhaps even less than that for the particularly prudent gamer. The little tunes that play through the game become predictable and annoying, as well as the playing sounds. Most players would just mute it I assume, as did I.
Story and Originality: I give Live Hold’em Pro a 7 out of 10 for Story and Originality. What can you say about a genre that has been done so much before? And story? But you don’t come to a poker app looking for strong characters and a vast world encompassing adventure.
General Gameplay: I give Live Hold’em Pro a 9 out of 10 for General Gameplay. Poker games have existed for years and years, and it’s because when you get right down to it Hold’em is a damn fine way to use a deck of cards. Live Hold’em Pro has the added benefit of playing competitors worldwide, which brings a whole lot of depth to the gameplay.
Addictiveness: I give Live Hold’em Pro a 9 out of 10 for Addictiveness. Those daily log in bonuses will be the death of us all I swear, they just keep getting better, and better, and better.
Overall, I give Live Hold’em Pro a 7 out of 10.
