New Super Luigi U General Guide (Cheats, Tricks, and Easter Eggs)

New Super Luigi U is a DLC pack building off of the mechanics of New Super Mario Bros. U, and while the world map is the same, the gameplay is far more difficult. Players will instantly notice that levels must be completed in a quarter of the time allotted in NSMBU, enemies are more abundant, the level designs require more finesse, and secret exits are far trickier to find. Nintendo meets players halfway, granting a new invincible character and adjusting Luigi's physics so that he has less traction and higher jumps, including his infamous fluttering jump.

Invincible Character: Nabbit

Nabbit cannot be killed by enemies or even bosses, but he will lose a life if he falls into a pit or another map obstacle befalls him. He's automatically selectable in multiplayer modes and is an excellent choice for new players that have trouble keeping pace with their first-player counterparts, but he can also be used on a level-by-level basis by holding ZL and ZR while selecting a level, or otherwise holding "B" on the Wii Remote. Nabbit cannot use power-ups or ride Yoshis, which precludes the player from collecting some Star Coins or reaching some secret entrances.

Playable Character: Mii

During the final level, players can choose their Mii as a playable character.

Multiplayer Level Assistance

With a friend and a GamePad, players can select a multiplayer mode which allows one player to add blocks into a level on the fly or stun enemies. This can be especially useful while combing levels for secret exits, or while attempting to beat your best time on a level.

M-Block

After beating the game, players can make things harder on themselves. After beating Bowser for the first time, a block inscribed with an "M" appears at the beginning of every level. By hitting the block, players will revert to "Mario physics", increasing traction and reducing jumping distance. Since every level was re-designed with Luigi's physics in mind, playing through with this handicap can seem nearly impossible at times, especially with the 100 second time limit which requires maintaining momentum and staying in the air as much as possible.

"Hidden" Luigi Sprites

Every level contains a novelty Luigi sprite, either as a picture, an interactive object, or as colored blocks arranged like pixels from early games, totally 82 in all. Most are in plain view and are encountered naturally during the course of the level, but some are difficult to locate:

  • Flame-Gear Tower - Hidden below the final gear and to the left.
  • Layer-Cake Desert-2 - Inside the passageway that's only accessible with the p-acorn power-up at the beginning of the level.
  • Layer-Cake Desert-4 - In the underground room, accessible by way of the green pipe.
  • Frosted Glacier Ghosthouse - To the left of the first drop, underwater.
  • Soda Jungle Ghosthouse, Rock-Candy Mines Rising Pihrannas, and Meringue Clouds Ghosthouse - Near the secret exits of the stage.

File Stars

  • File Stars are awards for "completionist" accomplishments, including:
  • Beating the final boss
  • Reaching the flag at the end of every level as well as secret flagpoles
  • Collecting every star coin (3 per level)
  • Capturing Nabbit at the start of each new world.

Unlimited Lives

If you see a Koopa Troopa descending stairs, jump on their back so that the shell hits the side of the stair above it; Luigi will continuously bounce on the shell as it rebounds, gaining more points with each collision and racking up periodic 1UPs.
