Guide: How to Unlock the Full Roster in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS

Big decisions, spoilers included

Super Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is now available around the World, and millions of 3DS gamers will be booting up the game and taking their first tentative steps into the first portable entry in the series. It's always exciting to move into a new generation of Smash Bros. and try out old favourites, or to jump straight in with a new arrival.

We've already produced a launch guide of everything you need to know about Super Smash Bros.; of course, when saying 'everything' we were thinking of the core information to give you a strong start with the game. We cover the modes, features and customisations that are possible, which hopefully help you to go in with open eyes. Yet still, if you're a veteran and need nitty-gritty details, there's more that can be shared.

As a result, this article will tell you how to unlock the full character roster, courtesy of information from our friends at Eurogamer. This, naturally, reveals all of the hidden characters — some of which Nintendo is announcing itself — so consider this your unequivocal SPOILER tag. If you don't want to know, click away now.

Picking a character can either be a vital decision or a simple matter of experimentation. Some may have already decided on their 'main' before they've even loaded the game, while for others it's a process of trail and error, working through the roster to find that fighter that clicks perfectly with the player's style. There are large, heavy characters that are slow but powerful; small, nippy fighters that don't pack the same punch; mid-size brawlers that find a nice balance and variations besides. With the new title's extensive customisation options, as well as each fighter's unique characteristics — some are brawlers, others more effective from a distance etc — there's a lot to consider.

Yet still, figuring out how to unlock these characters can be a hit and miss affair, so below is a guide that makes it nice and simple. If you want to fast-track your progress to have the full cast in double-quick time, this is the information you need.

  • Falco — Beat the game's Classic Mode once / Complete 20 Smash Mode battles.
  • Ness — Complete 10 Smash Mode battles.
  • Wario — Complete 30 Smash Mode battles.
  • Dark Pit — Beat the game's Classic Mode a total of four times / Play 50 Smash Mode battles.
  • Jigglypuff — Complete Classic Mode on the Infernal difficulty setting or higher / Complete 120 Smash Mode battles.
  • Lucina — Complete 40 Smash Mode battles / Complete Classic Mode as Marth on the Standard difficulty setting or higher (no continues).
  • Bowser Jr. — Complete Classic Mode as Bowser on the Extra Spicy difficulty setting or higher.
