Bubble Bobble Plus! review

Who doesn’t love a bit of Bubble Bobble? Unlike the disaster that was Bubble Bobble Double Shot on DS, this version sticks to the endearing basics, and is all the better for it.

Standard mode features all 100 levels from the original arcade game, playable either on your lonesome or with a friend. Nothing’s been changed from the original in terms of how it plays. Sure, we’ve seen this all before in those Taito Legends collections but that doesn’t stop it being a great game, and if you haven’t played with Bub and Bob before, this is as good a place as any to get in on the action. When you’re done with that, there are 100 more levels in Super Standard mode.

A four-player Arrange mode and Super Arrange mode offer something new. Here there are clues to solve to unravel a story (no, really) and diagonal platforms allow for diagonal fire, which you won’t find in the original. They’ve messed with the concept but thankfully it works. The more competitive types among you can post your high scores on a world ranking table. There’s an ‘expert’ level pack to download too.
