Whether you think purchasing an Apple Watch is worth it or not, having to spend even more money on a stand just sucks, with prices on Apple.com range from $30 to around $130.
If you want to save some cash, consider making your own stylish stand, which you might find to be even cooler than those on Apple’s website.
YouthMin1 put together an Apple Watch stand and shared the results on Reddit. The user explained in the r/AppleWatch subreddit that the entire project took about an hour to complete, with the glue and stain taking 3 and 12 hours to dry, respectively.
The base was assembled from old drawer boards, glued together, cut, and then sanded to shape. The watch stand was assembled from a dowel and used to hold the watch. YouthMin1 then drilled out the dowel and the base so that the respective charge cables could be housed and positioned to fashionably charge the appropriate devices. The end product, which you can see in it’s entirety here, looks simple and presentable, and I’m sure will cost you a lot less than even the cheapest stand on Apple.com.
Nitintech on YouTube describes his project as the easiest Apple stand and charging dock that you can make for yourself, and after watching the video, he might be right. All you need for this project is your Apple Watch charger, a big paperclip, cloth, and the loop accessory that comes with most Apple Watches.
Configure the cloth on a corner of a table, clamp the paperclip over the cloth and corner, tuck the remaining cloth into the loop accessory, and that’s it – you’ve just fashioned yourself an incredibly easy charging dock and stand for your Apple Watch. Be careful though, as the charger could easily heat up the cloth.
For this DIY project, you’ll need a few pieces: a charging cable, floral foam, silk fabric, a stapler and staples, duct tape, and a knife. With the knife, cut the floral foam into shape so that your Apple Watch can rest on top of the foam. Wrap the foam with silk – use staples where necessary, and then rest the watch on the charger. You’re done.
Kemrah on Imgur explains that you can use duct tape to keep the foam stand from moving around, as the final project is incredibly light.
For a project that costs close to nothing and should take only about 10 minutes or so to construct, the results are decent. Not too shabby looking.
If you own an Apple Watch, iPhone, and a fancy pair of glasses, you might want to make this handsome looking stand. Admittedly, this project requires a bit of time and craftsmanship, but the results are fantastic. It might just make for a great weekend project.
User adrunkenman presented his project on Imgur, with details explaining how to make his rendition of an Apple Watch stand.
First, you’ll need a few tools and a couple blocks of wood. Make sure you have a drill, chisel, Apple chargers, hammer, and a nail. Drill two holes in the block of wood, and then chisel out a channel for the charging cables. A second block of wood can then be positioned near the holes to comfortably hold your glasses. Once this is done, hammer a nail near the first two holes you drilled. The nail is used to better hold the iPhone.
In the build album, it appears that the top of the nail is flattened so that the iPhone rests comfortably on the nail. If you’re worried about scratching your phone, consider fashioning the nail with a piece of cloth or replace it with a piece of wood. The choice is yours. In any case, the finished product looks pretty nice.
Back to the basics. An easy and innovative way to nicely hold and charge your Watch is to use the box that it came in.
YouTube user Frankie Fultz explains how you can get the most out of your Watch purchase. He shows in the video how you can turn the Watch case into a charging bed with only a few cuts and holes. He then shows how the original box can be used to hold the charging bed, which is about as easy as it gets to constructing your own stand.
YouTube user Joe Arnold uses the Apple packaging to create another stand, which looks a lot better than the previous DIY project.
To make this, you’ll ned to cut a hole for the charger and also cut a channel for the charging cable. Once that’s completed, position the cable through the hole so that it sits upright (use duct tape for firmness). And then slip the cable through the channel so that it sits nicely in the box. That’s it.
Whether you think an Apple Watch is a flop, shelling out more cash for something to rest it on seems illogical, especially if you can build an affordable stand yourself. So, if you have a great idea for an Apple stand, share with us in the comments. We’d be keen to hear what you create, as there are plenty of ways to create an Apple stand that stands out from the competition.
