How to Ensure Windows File Integrity by Using Checksums

Have you ever downloaded a program and decided that you wanted to check it for integrity? One of the best ways to do this is looking at its checksum. While this is available on many reputable websites, you might want to check it yourself to compare, which is something you can’t do in Windows by default.

Fear not, though, because an easy to use program called HashTab makes it possible. First, go download the app and run the installation.

Once the installation is done, the program will just hang out in the background. To use it, you’ll want to right-click on a file and then go to Properties. Now, you’ll see new tabs labeled File Hashes, Digital Signatures, or both.

Digital Signatures will only appear on installation files, while File Hashes will be on everything. On the File Hashes screen, you can see checksums, and even compare files for any discrepancies, which will let you make sure you’re getting exactly what you expect.
