Get The Zaniest Endless Running Experience With Robot Unicorn Attack 2

What happens when a Robot Unicorn Attacks for a second time? You end up with a strange game called Robot Unicorn Attack 2 (free), of course. Just like the first game, it’s incredibly weird, but that’s all a part of its charm.

While it’s an endless runner at its core, RUA2 feels like more than the sum of its incredibly simple parts. But is it as good as the first? Keep reading to find out!

This review is based on the iOS version, but you can also play on Android too.

Gameplay

As previously mentioned, RUA2 is really just an endless runner. The player attempts to survive, run, jump, and dash his or her way from the left of the screen to the right for as long as possible while racking up points. It’s a simple formula, and one that we’ve seen used on iOS over and over again. However, what makes this one actually worth your time is the quirkiness.

Before we get to how strange the game is, let’s talk about the controls, which are incredibly simple. Only two buttons are on the screen — jump and dash. Your robot unicorn runs automatically, so all you need to do is jump over obstacles and cliffs and dash through enemies and certain objects. You can use settings to swap the location of the jump and dash buttons if you do so choose, but I found them to be fine the way they are. With the simple button placement, controlling the game is easy. It just comes down to timing from the player, and like all endless runners, therein lies the challenge.

As I hope I’ve made clear, this game is weird. It follows a battle between Team Rainbow and Team Inferno, which sounds weird enough on its own. When that battle takes place in ultra-colorful worlds of endless running, things get even stranger. It’s hard to describe the weirdness, and the best thing I can say is just download the free game for yourself, and be prepared for laughs as you enter into the insane world of Adult Swim, robotic unicorns and all the nonsense that comes along with it.

Sound & Visuals

As far as endless running games go, this is one of the best-looking options you will find, easily rivaling Temple Run 2 for visual splendor. The worlds are incredibly colorful and vibrant, which makes the simple gameplay feel far more alive than you would expect. A game with rainbow in the title leads you to expect a certain look and feel, and RUA2 certainly delivers. It doesn’t rewrite the book or vary the look of the first game very much, but it doesn’t need to. The first game defined a style that works perfectly, and RUA2 is still worth playing from a pure visual standpoint, as it just puts you in a good mood.

The included soundtrack matches the fun and happy theme of the game perfectly. The music is actually one of the main monetization schemes in the game, as the developers sell additional songs through in-app purchases. So if you really like the game, you can support them and expand the background music. Thankfully, since the default music is so good, it’s not necessary, as you can enjoy the tracks and save your money if you should desire.

Game Life & Value

This game is available completely free of charge. You can play everything in the game without spending a dime, and the available purchases only speed-up the process of making your way from world to world. None of them are locked as long as you are willing to put in the time to rank up and progress, which is exactly how a F2P game should be designed.

There are also ads that pop up every now and again, which is only a slight annoyance, and the developers need to make money somehow, so it’s hard to complain about them too much.

RUA2_4

It’s not a perfect free-to-play game, but it seems that few developers have figured out how to create one of those yet. As far as games of this sort go, RUA2 delivers the good for anyone looking to have fun without spending a dime.

Conclusion

Overall, I love Robot Unicorn Attack 2. It features plenty to do, fantastic sound and visual design and a F2P model that does not detract from the gameplay experience. There’s a reason it’s featured on our Best iPhone Games Page, and quite simply, it’s because it’s an insane and enjoyable runner that’s worth having on your device when you feel like doing a little high-speed platforming.
