There are so many great video games waiting to be played, and so little time to play them all. This means many gamers struggle to know what to play next, and which must-play titles to prioritize over the glut of mediocre titles out there.
In this article we’ll name 50 video games covering all genres and all platforms, all of which were recommended by your fellow MakeUseOf readers. We’ll also be picking out a selection of games from the list that deserve special attention.
What follows are 50 video games we recommend you consider playing. We all have our preferences, whether that’s playing shooters on the Xbox One, racing games on the PlayStation 4 or strategy games on the PC, but there should be something for everybody included in the list below.
There are some retro titles included in the mix that were originally released decades ago. And to bring it all bang up to date there are also several free-to-play, browser-based MMORPGs included. If you can’t find your next title on this list then you must have very niche tastes in video games!
These are presented without comment to allow you to pick the names that interest you out from the list. A simple Google search will reveal the platform, genre, and age of each game, as well as how you can get hold of a copy for yourself. The newer titles will be easy to source, but the older titles may require you to use an emulator or take a trip to eBay.
Five titles I personally feel deserve a special mention are Elite, Minecraft, This War Of Mine, Valkyria Chronicles, and Red Dead Redemption…
Elite was released more than 30 years, first appearing on the BBC Micro and Acorn Electron computers. This space-trading simulator had revolutionary graphics 30 years ago, but despite now looking old and tired, its considerable charm means it’s still worth playing.
Minecraft is the sandbox game almost everybody will have at least heard of, if not actively played by now. Its unique look and feel means it has resonated with gamers of all ages, and as it’s now available on every platform you care to mention, there is no excuse not to join in.
This War Of Mine is one of the newest titles on the list, having only been released in November 2014. This is a war game with a difference, as you take on the role of a group of civilians trying to survive the invasion that’s based on the real-life Siege Of Sarajevo.
Valkyria Chronicles is a tactical RPG that’s a lot more exciting than its genre suggests. Loosely based on events at the beginning of World War II, the game sees you take control of a unit of soldiers as they fight their way through various battles.
Red Dead Redemption is by far the best game Rockstar has made barring the glut of great Grand Theft Auto titles. Set in the Wild West, this is a sandbox game with a fantastic storyline and some unique gameplay elements. All of which make it an essential title.
This list of video games you could be playing right now is far from complete. There are literally thousands of other titles that you may be playing and want to recommend to the rest of the MakeUseOf readership.
This means we would love you to carry on the conversation in the comments section below. Simply tell us what video games you’re playing right now and enjoying so much that you think other people should join you.
