There’s no limit to the Internet’s love for classic video games, and fan games are an awesome example of this passion. People spend hours modifying classic titles, or even remaking them from scratch.
We’ve pointed out games like Super Mario Crossover, a fan creation that lets you play the original Super Mario Bros as characters like Link or Samus. Today we’re pointing to six more free web sites and games that modify, or build on, games from the 80s and 90s. Let’s get started.
Jeff Hong is an animator, known in the film industry for his work with Disney and Nickelodeon, and online for his Unhappily Ever After page on Tumblr. His latest site lets you play a bunch of classic Nintendo games, right in your browser, with a twist.
That’s right: the main characters have been replaced with punk musicians. If you’re a fan of the genre, who loves some nostalgia, you need to check all of these games out. Well, all of them up to Duckless Hunt — that one’s just frustrating.
What’s that? You had no idea you could just play classic Nintendo games online? It’s not strictly legal, but you can, and Let’sPlaySNES.com is one of the easier sites to do that on.
We’ve pointed out sites where you can play NES titles online before, so why mention LetsPlaySNES here? Because it offers a ton of fan-hacked games for online play. ROM hacks are fan-made creations that use original games as a starting point, and some of them change just about everything.
Super Mario Adventure, for example, is widely regarded as one of the best Mario ROM hacks of all time. And you can play it on LetsPlaySNES, along with a variety of other hacks. Check it out.
Here’s a question you’ve never asked: what would the classic 90’s PC game Wolfenstein 3D look like if it was in 1D? No, not 2D – 1D. One dimension, as in a straight line.
Experience all the door-opening, Nazi-shooting and key-picking-up you remember – complete with original sound effects – in a single line. Because why not?
The last game removed two dimensions from one classic game; here’s one that adds two to another.
That’s right: it’s MegaMan, re-imagined as a first person shooter. And it’s totally free. Give it a shot.
The history of Super Smash Bros does not include a release for the original Game Boy, but what if it did? Well, it would probably look like this.
Super Smash Land is packed with nostalgia, yes, but it’s also a pretty great game in its own right. Give it a shot.
Finally, we come to Total Tiny Arcade, which combines remakes of a bunch of arcade classics into one continuous challenge. 27 classic arcade games are offered here in a race against time.
Whether you’ve got found memories of blowing through quarters at the arcade or just love classic games, this one’s well worth checking out.
For more remixed glory, you should check out the great games at StabYourself, offering weird great takes on everything from Tetris (rotate the pieces however you like) to Super Mario Bros (give Mario a portal gun). Or you can check out the multiplayer chaos that is Super Mario War.
What other fan-made remixes or rebuilds of classic games are out there? Let’s compile more, together, in the comments below. I’m looking forward to it.
