Up for a quick game with a friend? Whether you’re both physically next to each other or miles away, you can enjoy a little downtime with nothing but a browser window on your computer. Pick any of these great two-player games and have fun!
Browser-based games have come a long way in terms of graphics. You can play Quake III online or go further back in time and relive your childhood with free-to-play classic arcade games.
Now, most modern browsers are trying to kill Adobe Flash, but it still rules the world of browser-based gaming. The upside of this is that you can download and play Flash games offline too.
For now, let’s not worry about the merits and demerits of Flash, and focus on just the most fun two-player games you can play.
The player on the left controls his character with W, S, A, D, while the player on the right controls his with the arrow keys. Use the down arrow or S key to swing your racket, and the other keys to move around or jump. Physics will do the rest to simulate the real world.
Gun Mayhem is one of the best browser-based fighting games. You play as colorful mafiosa-like cartoon figures, armed with a variety of guns. In the course of each level, new guns keep dropping down from the sky, as well as power-ups like extra lives, speed boosters, and shields. The objective is simple: Shoot your opponent off the map. The Options menu lets you set controls for up to four characters, which might be too much on a single keyboard, but it works well for two people. And if you like Gun Mayhem but get tired of it, there’s always Gun Mayhem 2 for more fun!
Fortz has a simple premise: You need to use your gun to knock down your opponent’s fort, and then kill him! Each player controls a fort on one side of the screen. Jump around to pick up your ammunition and go back to your gun, which you need to aim quickly and fire at the other fort. Keep going, it’s more or less a race to see who gets to the other guy first!
Tank Wars is a fun combination of physics and fighting. Both players control a tank each, and the objective is to fire a missile that blasts a significant portion of the ground. As the opponent’s tank sinks, it’s a race to who hits bottom first. Yes, the physics can be weird at times, but it’s actually a lot of fun when you start playing it.
It may not be one of the top football games you haven’t heard of, but this one is still a blast! When we say football here, we mean it in the British sense i.e. soccer. Each player controls an avatar with an oversized head, protecting his net and trying to score a goal into the other’s area. Move around, jump around, and use bonuses like speed boosters, smaller nets, bombs, bouncy balls, and lots more. Game on!
There are plenty of places to enjoy a free game of Battleship online, but this one is our favorite. The rules stay the same as always. Invite your friend by sending a link, set up your 10×10 grid with different battleships, say you’re ready, and begin. Just click anywhere on your opponent’s grid to try and sink his battleship, and keep playing till one of you is out of ships. There are two fleet types: Russian or classic. The Russian fleet has more options, which makes the game more fun! Oh yeah, if you don’t have a friend online, play a random game with a stranger, there are always a few easy games to be had at any moment.
If you want a battle of wits, there is nothing like a game of chess. Lichess is fantastic to start a quick game without signing up, and the graphics are good enough to be pleasing to the eye. Plus, there’s a chatroom, game modes (like Chess960, Antichess, King of the Hill, etc.), and even an analysis board. Our favorite feature is that you can request to take back a move—wonderful when just playing a game between friends! Psst, you might want to pick up pointers to get better at chess too!
Sudoku is a fun brain-teaser, but you can make it competitive. That’s what Speed Sudoku is all about. Sign up and create a new game or join an existing one. You can have a maximum of four players, but you can also play between the two of you. While you’re solving, you will also see the other players’ progress in terms of percentage, which keeps your competitive engine running!
Cube Slam is a game that showcases the potential of HTML5, but forget about that and just enjoy this offering from Google. Create a new game, share the link with a friend, and you can even allow access to your webcam and microphone to see and talk to each other. The game itself is a souped up version of air hockey or pong, with your objective being to move your paddle around to stop the puck from hitting your side. Peppered with new level designs and power-ups, you’ll be happy to keep playing this with your friends for hours.
8-Ball Pool requires you to sign up for a Miniclip account, but that’s a small price to pay for a free game. Find your friend’s username, invite them to a game, and rack them up! The game’s physics are fantastic, and there’s a slight indicator to show where the ball is likely to go to. As you play, you can even earn coins to customize your cue stick and enter tournaments.
Let’s have it, folks. This isn’t an exhaustive list and we know it. So if you have a favorite browser-based game to play with your friends, share it in the comments!
