Crysis 2 has done an amazing thing here. It's a sequel that while borrowing heavily from the first Crysis, plays out absolutely nothing like it and creates its own standalone experience. While most FPS like CoD series or Halo do improve in each iteration, this is one of the few games that dramatically enhances its previous installment. This is the new FPS, the thinking man's FPS, and I can't wait to get my second playthrough started.

Crysis 2's story is substance-heavy as well, weaving together conspiratorial narrative threads involving an alien invasion, the outbreak of a horrible epidemic, and a potentially evil megacorporation, all framed by one of the most realistic visions of New York City ever glimpsed in a game. The story will make sense even to series newcomers, though I couldn't help feeling like a bit more explanatory exposition (outside of an all-too-brief opening cinematic) would have helped make the early parts of the game more impactful.

Easily one of the best looking games on the Xbox 360, Crysis 2 falls a bit short on the 8 to 10 hour single player campaign, but flourishes in offering up very addictive multiplayer. While I missed the open landscape of the original Crysis, the somewhat linear nature of the single player campaign Crysis 2 didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. However, the poor A.I., on both sides of the conflict, drags down the enjoyment level of the single player. Going up against the human players in multiplayer is extremely satisfying though and creatively uses unlockables to drive you forward with match after match. Crysis 2 is easily the best first person shooter that's been released in 2011 so far and vastly more balanced than the original Crysis. Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 shooter fans that love multiplayer should pick up Crysis 2 as soon as possible.

Crysis 2 largely avoids the problems that surfaced during the beta, though there were some hiccups. With no dedicated servers, a few matches were interrupted by the annoying server migration. In my seven hours on the battlefield I occasionally suffered from game-crippling lag, but these instances were rare.

Gamers are sure to appreciate the diversity of weapons and, like I said, the advantages of the Nanosuit. Weapons are appropriate for all play styles, so you shouldn't worry if you're the kind of gamer who prefers the dash-onto-the-scene-guns-blazing approach, because there's plenty of fire-power at your disposal.

While the single-player campaign is something I can see myself returning to a couple more times in a quest for Achievements/Trophies, the multiplayer side of Crysis 2 has me utterly hooked. I came for the pretty graphics, was happy with the solid shooter underneath them and am pretty much beside myself with how unexpectedly good the online play is.
