The 16 Best MMORPGs of 2014

MMORPGs of 2014

mmorpgs 2014

MMORPGs hold a special place in most people’s hearts, and considering the amount of changes they have undergone in the last few years, it’s easy to see why. Genres are breaking into each-other so much so that it starts to show an MMO future for gaming, and we’re excited to see it come to pass.

Here’s a list of MMOs that we’re looking forward to in 2014 so much so that we’ve decided to share:

#16 Game of Thrones: Seven Kingdoms

There isn’t much known about the upcoming Game of Thrones MMO, but we do know a few interesting tidbits: it’s going to be playable soon, it’s made by BigPoint (makes browser games), it’s endorsed by HBO, and it runs on the Unity engine.

#15 Prime World

What happens when you combine a MOBA with an MMORPG? Some people would call it blasphemy, others call it “something like Prime World? I guess?”.

Basically you get the battle arena aspects of MOBAs and instanced battles with the persistence of an MMO character.

Prime World is currently in Beta.

#14 World of Warcraft: Next Expansion

The biggest subscription MMO’s next expansion is expected to come out next year (if they keep with the 2 year cycle), and we have no darned idea what it’s going to be about. Many people would probably take anything that doesn’t sound remotely like Panda.

Regardless, the game has gotten more and more content in it with every year that has come and passed, even if the sub numbers have been steadily dropping.

#13 Bless

Neowiz is making an MMO. It’s special because it’s the first to use Unreal Engine 3’s brand new landscape tool, specially made by Epic of Neowiz.

The pictures that show the tool’s usage results are certainly impressive, but looking nice won’t be enough it it wants to be truly successful.

#12 Otherland

Currently in closed beta, Otherland is another title based on the Unreal Engine 3. The main draw of the game is that the game is based on the eponymous book series by Tad Williams.

In addition, there’s the thing that the game combines different universes, allowing you to go from medieval castles to cyber-punk cities.

#11 The Repopulation

The Repopulation is a sandbox MMORPG with the possibility to have player-created cities. In addition, there’s procedurally generated missions and the sci-fi setting.

There’s also the fact that it has a rather uninspired name.

#10 Phantasy Star Online 2

Published by Sega, the second MMO outing of the Phantasy Star series has been released on PC last year, but only the Japanese have been able to play it thus far.

As of E3 2013, there hasn’t been any new information on a western release of PSO2.

#9 The Crew

Ubisoft new car racing game wants to bind everybody together in one seamless, open and persistent virtual United States. Apparently it would take you 90 minutes to drive from coast to coast in-game. That’s not a very large US.

Even still, it’s looking mighty intriguing, if only for how the world is going to be persistent and you’ll encounter your friends racing around.

#8 Lineage Eternal

It’s been a while since that fateful day when Lineage showed the gameplay trailer to end all diablo-perspective action RPG trailers. After being  vaporware for a couple of years, Lineage is stated to get a release date at the end of this year.

If it’s going to bring more of the intuitive gesture-based gameplay they showed in the gameplay trailer, it’s going to be mighty fun to play.

#7 Camelot Unchained

camelot unchained

Funded through Kickstarter, the creators of Dark Age of Camelot and Warhammer Online seek to bring some of the older classic MMO game design back. Just like bringing sexy back, but with MMO instead.

They promise pure player-driven economy and persistent Realm versus Realm fighting, but we’ll have to see how far the 2.2mil dollars will take them.

#6 War Thunder

A personal favourite already, the mighty warplane fighting simulator is going to be getting a tanky treatment, hopefully adding land vehicles to its already vast repertoire of planes it’s boasting.

If it’s going to have the same intuitive controls and the same fluid gameplay style of the already popular beta, it’s going to go a long way towards blowing World of Tanks out of the water.

#5 World of Warplanes / World of Warships

Promised by Wargaming to be the next logical steps to their already insanely popular World of Tanks, the two titles are actually rather broken up from their forefather gameplay-wise. Land, air and sea will be separate in order to make sense in the context of the game.

While sad, it’s supposed to make the game overall more balanced and competitive, so they will at least keep on to that edge.

#4 Tom Clancy’s The Division

While Tom Clancy may rest in peace, his legacy lives on in Ubisoft’s new online multiplayer third-person tactical shooter action role-playing video game.

The 7 minute demo impressed everybody during the 2013 E3 press conference, so we’re looking forward to it getting live.

#3 Wildstar

This brand new MMO is quickly growing in popularity to the level at which people (again) say it may be the next WoW killer. Although I’m not holding my breath in that regard, it’s true that it’s looking mighty intriguing, especially as a new IP.

#2 The Elder Scrolls Online

After Skyrim’s explosion of success and it’s subsequent expansions, ZeniMax Online Studios has decided to announce and put out a beta of their new MMORPG, set a millenium before the latest Elder Scrolls game.

It’s been in development for 5 years now, and it’s certainly ambitious, but we’ll have to see if it pans out.

#1 Everquest Next

SoE’s sequel to Everquest shows great visual fidelity, as well as the rare feature of destructible environments. It shows the base of next-gen MMO, not only by the looks but also by the technology underneath.

We shall see how it’s going to be like when it finally rolls the beta out, but we’ve got a good feeling about it.
