MachineGames was rumored to be are working on a new game that would be using the id Tech 5 engine. After a few teases, it was eventually revealed to be Wolfenstein: The New Order. Jens Matthies, creative director at MachineGames stated in an interview, ” We are excited to bring a new chapter of Wolfenstein to gamers everywhere, as fans of the series, working on this game is an honor, and our team is driven to create an unforgettable action-adventure experience that will make FPS fans proud”. The game will not feature multiplayer, as Jens Matthies stated that,” “It’s such a huge part of video game legacy. If there’s a video game museum, Wolfenstein is in the first room. It’s the start of the wave that shaped the world of gaming. On a personal level, I played this when I was younger and it was mind-blowing. I never then of course dreamed that I was going to be working with it. It’s both an honor and a legacy.” [reference]
The game is being re-imagined in an alternate world where the Nazis actually win World War II and achieve world domination. Due to a highly sensitive mission gone wrong during the American war, the protagonist B.J Blazkowicz is injured and comatose for 14 years. Due to the mental state he is in, he is sent to an asylum. However the Nazis arrive at the asylum, with the purpose of killing everyone there.
This somehow triggers Blazkowicz’s memory, and he escapes with the help of a nurse named Anya. As the two disembark on their adventure they meet a whole slew of interesting characters, and eventually, Blazkowicz embarks on an “impossible mission” to defeat the Third Reich. Hitler is rumoured be showing up in the game but in what shape and form hasn’t been revealed yet.
Gameplay will be a throwback to the old Wolfenstein games, though there will be turrent sequences and melee kills included. The player will be able to break into secret research facilities and heavily guarded weapon stashes and upgrade various weapons.
Enemies include over-sized Nazi robots, Super Soldiers, Elite Shock Troops, and robot dogs. This is coupled with intense mountain-top car chases, underwater exploration, player-controlled Nazi war machines and more. The developers kept the tradition of the 100 Health Points limit. Regenerating health is included, but will only regenerate health up to 20 HP.
Dual wielding machine guns will be possible. Along with traditional handguns and shotguns, there will be the laser cutter, a device that can burn through almost anything (and gets upgraded to the free-form Laserkraftwerk).
