Fable Legends is an upcoming entry into the much loved Fable series of role playing games. Fable legends is a cooperative action role playing game that is currently in development by Lionhead Studios who. The game is set to be published by Microsoft Studios exclusively on the Xbox One, though no release date has been given.
Not much is known about the development cycle for Fable Legends, but it is known that the game wouldn’t have been possible on the Xbox 360. Using the unique powers and opportunities afforded to them with the Xbox One, Lionhead are creating a cooperative multiplayer role playing game that actually looks like it could work. It’s important to note that the game is not an MMO.
Set 400 years before the events that transpired in the original Fable, at a point in time when a Heroes guild wasn’t needed, Heroes were everywhere. But it’s only now that the people of Albion are actually learning the true worth of a legitimate hero.
In this window of time, Albion is host to a magical artefact called “the moon on the stick.” For some reason, the Heroes of our tale are on a quest to find the moon on the stick.
Fable Legends makes use of a 5 player set up in the game, with four players taking the role of Heroes (if other players aren’t available, their respective characters are AI controlled) whilst the fifth player takes control of The Villain.
Gameplay in Fable Legends all focuses on the implementation of different character classes and player style, thus reflecting its Dungeons and Dragons-esque inspirations. Further showing this inspiration is one of the main aspects of the game, the Villain player controls how the Heroes quest will unfold. The game takes on a dungeon crawling quality which pushes it further away from the traditional Fable formula, the Heroes will however still interact in Villages. It’s at these villages where the player will customise their loadouts. The hub location in Fable Legends has been named Titchfield. After choosing a quest, players are immediately dispatched to the location without any world traversal.
Like in a Tower Defence game, the Villain accumulates point which can be used to purchase units that are then deployed against the team of Heroes. The Villain makes use of this by choosing enemy spawn locations, the agro levels (their strength and aggressiveness) of the enemies. They also have control of where to lay traps and which kind of trap is set, they can drop gates to separate players or block certain paths. The Villain also chooses when the stages final boss decides to show its face. The game is planned to include SmartGlass feature that will allow the Villain to plan their attack before the Heroes embark on their quest, thus lending the game an even greater Tower Defence feeling.
While the Villain is a singular character, the Heroes have a small selection to choose from. Thus far we’ve seen:
