Doom is a first-person shooter that is the official reboot of the series. This is the first Doom title to be released in over a decade as Doom 3 was officially launched back in 2004. id Software has been working on the game since Doom 3 was launched and it was originally expected to be called Doom 4. After years of making very little progress, id Software decided to start over in 2011 and begin working on the current iteration of version of the game. The game is slated to be released in the spring of 2016 for Microsoft Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4.
As Doom 4, the game’s production was announced as beginning way back in 2008 after rumors of the next game in the series started floating around late in 2007. The original idea for the game was to take place on earth and to have gameplay styled after Doom II: Hell on Earth rather than the horror style of the original game. In April 2009, id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead said Doom 4 was “deep in development”. The exec was asked if Doom 4 would be “a sequel? A reboot? A prequel?”, his response was: “It’s not a sequel to Doom 3, but it’s not a reboot either. Doom 3 was sort of a reboot. It’s a little bit different than those.” While the company continued to talk about it’s plans for the game at conventions like Quakecon there were also plenty of reports that the title was in “development hell.”
In August of 2013, the company said it was still focused on putting out a Doom game but it was going back to the drawing board in order to make a better game. On February 19, 2014, Bethesda revealed that access to a beta version of Doom 4, which was now officially renamed Doom, will be available for those who pre-order Wolfenstein: The New Order on any of the platforms. Those players may also be selected to participate in the game’s multiplayer-only alpha.
The game was teased at E3 2014 and about 15 minutes of gameplay was shown off at the 2015 E3. The game was announced as coming in the spring of 2016. At QuakeCon 2015, it was announced that the game will run 1080p & 60fps on both consoles. The development team said they considered it “the most necessary graphical goal”, and that it can effectively improve gameplay fluidity.
The story of this version of Doom is similar to the story of the original though there are some twists, according to id Software and Bethesda. According to an official release, the player was sent by the The Union Aerospace Corporation to its massive research facility on Mars. The research facility has been completely overwhelmed by fierce and powerful demons that were somehow trapped inside the planet and allowed to roam free during research conducted by the corporation. The story says that only one person stands between their world and that of the human beings. The player is the lone DOOM Marine left at the complex and this particular marine has been activated to do one thing – kill them all.
Doom is a first-person shooter in the same vein of the original game. According to id Software executive producer Marty Stratton the gameplay relies on some truly awesome weapons, as well as big bad monsters and the need to move really fast. Sticking to the feel of the games that came before it, the title features a massive arsenal of different weapons. These weapons can be collected as the player battles their way through the story mode and freely switched by players throughout. While there are going to be some brand new weapons introduced in the game many classic weapons, including the super shotgun and much beloved BFG 9000 are going to be on offer as well. Weapons that aren’t guns are also included in the title included the very famous chainsaw that can cut through demons rather quickly.
The combat system of Doom, like it’s predecessors, puts emphasis on momentum and speed. There isn’t a lot of stealth, if any at all included in this game. The Doom Marine is supposed to plow through the monsters that are investing the facility. The game allows players to perform movements like sprinting and double-jumping, as well as a combat system known as “push forward combat.” The combat system also discourages players from taking cover behind obstacles or resting to regain health. The game is said to not feature any cover mechanics or a health-regeneration system. Players can collect health and armor pick-ups scattered throughout levels, and they can kill enemies to regain health. A new mechanic introduced in this version of Doom is the melee execution system. This melee-execution system allows players to perform a melee-takedown when players deal enough damages to enemies. Enemies available for melee takedown will be highlighted.
In addition to the single player story mode, where you are only remaining Doom marine on the planet, there is a new multiplayer mode that will have players going up against others online. There is not a cooperative story mode, but just one in which people go against each other in order to rack up as many kills as possible. There are other standard multi-player games such as four-player deathmatch, domination, freeze tag, and clan arena, included in the game.
The game will also include a built-in tool titled “Doom SnapMap” which allows players to construct custom maps, create new game modes and share them with the online community
The DOOM Marine is the only human character in the game but there are plenty of demonic monsters that will be run across during the course of the story. The actual list of monsters included in the game haven’t been entirely released but there are some monsters that are included in the game that are known, as well as at least one that seems likely to be included even if it hasn’t been confirmed:
Other monsters and characters could be included in the game before it is officially released.
