Assassin’s Creed III has expanded most gameplay concepts of the series and minigames are no exception.
Even though these should be simple recreational activities, they’re far from being easy and can provide quite a challenge.
Bowls
The easiest mini game available in the game, Bowls is an Italian game.
A red glowing ball is thrown by a player: the location of the ball will be the focus of the game as the player must launch another ball closest to the glowing one.
The flow of the game is simple: player A launches a ball, player B does the same; if player B ball is far from player A one he’ll have to launch again until his launch is better than player’s A one. Each player will have 4 tries per round and at the end of each round, the player who launched his ball closer to the red one earns more points. Win 5 points a player will win the game.
It’s not too hard to succeed at this game since the AI is not too skilled and there are a number of ways to get in the way of your opponent, like hitting their balls with yours or even hit the red glowing ball with yours. The only real tip I can give is to take count of the bouncing when you’re about to make your launch to be as accurate as you can be.
Morris
Morris is a board game created during the Roman Empire era: it’s a game that requires some good thinking.
Two opponents will begin with 9 stone pieces that must be placed on a board and they can move one piece on a marked region during their turn after they have places all their pieces on the board. The objective of the game is to align three pieces in a row on the marked region, allowing one player to take out the opponent’s pieces.
Unlike bowls, you may need a solid strategy here to succeed as the AI is pretty smart this time around. Try getting the first turn and place two piece on the diagonal corners of the board to get a slight advantage: the AI will constantly try to block your strategy so don’t be too aggressive and think, think, think. In the beginning you may feel a little frustrated but with a little bit of practice you’ll emerge victorious, even at higher levels. Be careful once your opponent is left with just one piece because he’ll be able to move it anywhere on the boards without limitations.
Fanorona
Things are getting serious now: Fanorona is the hardest minigame in Assassin’s Creed 3 and even the first stages can prove to be quite a challenge.
The game originated in Madagascar and involves a 9×5 checker board: you must move a piece on the board to take out a set of piece placed on the direction you’re going to move which can be diagonally, horizontally and vertically.
You can also chain attacks: as long as you take out a piece with your movement you will be able to move again. The player who loses all his pieces will loose.
Unlike in Morris, it’s always best to get the second turn so you can try to understand what your opponent is going to do; also, always try to chain attacks without being reckless, a wrong move can compromise your game.
The AI will always do its best to make the game difficult so always plan your moves trying to predict your opponent’s moves: it’s gonna be frustrating in the beginning but once you’ve practiced a bit you’ll see some good results!
