What I Want From Nintendo Direct’s Super Smash Bros Special

Tomorrow is a very special day. Why? Because at 11pm GMT there will be yet another Nintendo Direct stream. But this is no ordinary streams packed full of Yoshi and Mario news. No, this time round, its all about one of the best games of gaming history. That’s right, Super Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros 4, for the Wii U and 3DS, has been on everyone’s lips for well over a year now. We all want it! We all need it! Just give it to us already! Or, you know, a Nintendo Direct entirely dedicated to Smash Bros announcements will do I guess. Nintendo have graciously decided that they will confirm many secrets for the upcoming game, but, will they reveal what the game needs?

So far, all the developers of the game have announced are a few new characters, some classic characters’ return, and various asisst trophies and levels. Which is great, and I’ve been hanging onto every new piece that comes my way. But with something as big as a live stream all about Smash Bros? There are certain things I demand they reveal.

1 – A New Character

Obviously. Who doesn’t love new characters? And, let’s face it, apart from Little Mac and Mega Man, the new line up isn’t looking so great. They need a big reveal, a character we will all know and love, one that’s sure to please the masses.

Personally, I think they’ll choose a new Pokemon, one from X and Y. I don’t want them to, the game has enough Pokemon as it is, but the games have a habit with keeping with the new generations, adding in Lucario to keep up the last time. I reckon a Fairy Type, maybe Sylveon or Xerneas, to add not only new Pokemon but a new type as well.

Failing that, perhaps a new character could be from the smash hit (see what I did there?) Bravely Default. The Final Fantasy combatant took the world by storm last year, selling millions and setting gamers in awe. Its become one of Nintendo’s biggest successes in a long while, and by adding a character, maybe Tiz or Adea, they can excite the fan base very easily.

Not only that, but they can get Smash Bros lovers interested in Bravely Default if they have not played it. Or, at least that’s what happened with me and my playing as Ike in Smash Bros Brawl, it made me interested in Fire Emblem, and now its one of my favourite games.

2 – Smash Powers

One of the best part of battling in Smash Bros is chasing after that oh-so precious Smash ball, always glittering just out of your reach and unfairly hugging close to your dreaded opponent. The Smash ball unleashes your character’s special ability, usually a flurry of awesomeness and destruction – adding up to a grand and easy victory.

But, we’ve yet to actually see any in the new game. Whether is the smash attack of old characters, like Link or DK’s but revamped, I still want to see it in all its glory. Some of the smash attack’s weren’t at their best last time round, such as Luigi’s and Peach’s, which were both a little bit second rate compared to others. Or, it’d be nice to see what the new character’s have to offer once they crack that orb. What could Mega Man do? Or Wii Fit Trainer? They haven’t shown us yet! So please do!

3 – Other Content

Smash Bros is a great game, and I’ve loved every instalment. But its always good to have more content other than just plain combat. I’m talking Classic Mode, All-Star Mode and the like. I’d like to get a preview of what the new game’s take is on these traditional modes, if they’ll be any different, or if there will even be new ones!

Brawl offered the Subspace Emissary, which while it was subject to a lot of criticism, was a nice change in the game play and offered an adventure of combined Nintendo characters – which everyone should enjoy. It was said that Nintendo do not plan to have another story mode, which is saddening, but I would hope the Direct reveals what might be in its place.

4 – Online Capability

These days, the world of online gaming has overtaken the industry. Everything is done online, competition, downloads, high scores, if its not online, its not as important. Surely Nintendo know this by now. Well, as of any information they’ve given us about online capabilities in Smash Bros (which is none whatsoever) it would seem they don’t! I want Nintendo to tell me that the new Smash Bros will have a whole range of new online features, one’s that will knock my metaphorical socks off.

There could be random online battles, or online tournaments with various friends. If not that, online downloads of new content or updates, even the ability to post scores on the Miiverse. Something! Tell us!

5 – Release Date

Seriously. We’ve been waiting forever. You announced Mario Kart is out in May, now finally tell us when we can buy it! I’ll be counting down the days! June? July? December? Just say when and I’ll be happy, stop with all this vague “Next Year” shenanigans and give us a date! That’s all I ask.
