Game of Thrones Games That Need to Exist Already

So its official. Game of Thrones has become TV’s new phenomenon. I mean, be honest, how excited were you as April 6th grew closer and closer? Move over Winter because Spring is coming, and with it came the brand new season 4 – at last. Its been great, and I love it to bits, I don’t think my obsession could grow any larger than it already is. Seriously, challenge me.

But, I still have one problem. Where are all the games! Usually, when something grows so big, games fall like money-magnetising rain! Sure, they’ve made a few, Game of Thrones: The RPG and Game of Thrones: Ascent, but let’s be honest now – they were not what we wanted.

We wanted something mind-blowing, something amazing, something so incredible the White Walkers would turn around in order to get back North and pre-order all these awe-inspiring games. But? Nothing.

And I guess I just don’t understand why. There are so many types of games that could come from GOT. So many! Here are just a few I would give Jaime’s right hand for.

First – I’ll start out simple. Just Game of Thrones: The Video Game.

I’m not asking for anything big or spectacular here, I just mean a game purely based on the events of the TV show. Games are often made based simply on the events of a film, that follow the story of the movie in a linear manner, to a tee. And they are always a great way to get more into the story that the film didn’t quite allow. And that is what I ask of Game of Thrones: The Video Game.

So we start as Bran, playing around Winterfell, seeing King Robert Baratheon approaching in the distance, and a jumping puzzle is in your path in order to climb to the top of a tower. Next it flicks to Bran sparring with Prince Tommen, as a tutorial of sword fighting and archery. Flick forward a bit, and you are Arya battling against Prince Joffrey along the Kingsroad, then Jorah Mormont fighting to protect Daenerys from the assassins sent after her.

Its a simple idea, an action-adventure game simply set around the original story. Nothing more, nothing less. From that, you could well get  a decent series in, with each game based on each season. It is merely a chance to use the world of Game of Thrones without risk of a poor story or lack of character, for all of them are already provided. It would be a good way for GOT to break into the gaming industry and find success.

Up second, its a Strategy game.

Its called a “Game” of thrones, as if all the people in Westeros were to be played as chess pieces by a commanding hand (ahem, Tywin). This is the perfect premise for a strategy game. As is war, something which GOT is certainly not a stranger to.

If you’ve ever played strategy games like Sid Meir’s Civilisations or Crusader Kings 2, this is how the GOT strategy game would appear. You would take the role of a various choice of rulers in Westeros, such as Twyin, Robb, Renly or Stannis, each with their own benefits and perks, and use methods of strategy, such as trade, alliances and battle plans, in order to conquer the Seven Kingdoms as you see fit.

You would build up fortresses and castles, arm them with knights and sellswords, and ready for war. Or, take them into the world and storm the front line, taking down the Tullys or the Freys as you please. In strategy games, there are many ways to victory, all you need do is use your head to see which way best suits your faction.

But – that’s not all. While you may be focussed on the opposing kings, there will also be surrounding issues such as the White Walkers and the Wildlings, and the approaching threat of the dragons – just to add a little more to the fray. Chaos is a ladder, after all.

They already have another game like this, Game of Thrones: Genesis, and countless Mods for Mount and Blade and Age of Empires – but a new and official strategy game would be nice.

Another idea – Westeros: The Survival Game.

Ok, so maybe this one could be a bit silly if you think about it. But, then you think about it again and its amazing, right? Imagine Rust, you start off with nothing, and you must use the resources of the land and your friends in order to survive and prosper. Ok, great. But throw in a war, swords and dragons, and its even better.

The Survival game would start you off as no one, lost in the wilderness somewhere in Westeros. From here, it is up to you to explore the realm, trying to find food, water, and shelter where you can. You could find tools and build your own, and hunt rabbits and boar to make your own meals. Or, you could risk some moral points and steal someone else’s.

Its a direwolf eat direwolf world out there, and its all about survival. So craft swords, build bows, forge armour and hide your food, Westeros is no place for sharing. Eventually, after you’ve made a place for yourself in the wilderness and consider yourself fairly safe, you could well explore more of the world, and find burned out buildings and ruined castles.

The point of a survival game is the lack of civilisation, so the game could well be set after some travesty with the White Walkers or the dragons, in which Westeros has been wiped out. But, you can still see the remnants that make up the world we know and love, and of course, the dragons that infest the land.

In fourth place, since Star Wars refuses to pay up – Its Game of Thrones Battlefront 3.

Don’t laugh. I want this game so bad. I guess you could call it a GOT Shooter of sorts, or an fps, but there would probably be more sword fighting than shooting – hey, unless archery is your thing that is. Just imagine it, a whole battlefield, Stark vs Lannister, and you go hack at it! Brilliant fun! The idea reminds me of Chivalry Medieval Warfare, just battle for battle’s sake.

You would wear awesome armour blazing direwolves or lions, flowers or Stags, whichever your preference! Game maps would include the Godswood, Winterfell, The Blackwater, Meeren, the Tridant, and they could include all sorts of battles from throughout Westeros’ history!

Obviously, one of the best parts of Battlefront was getting enough points to become a hero, and this would apply in GOT Battlefront as well. You could become Jon Snow, with Ghost at your side. Or Eddard, valaryian steel blade at hand. Maybe even Hodor! Hodor would win every battle. Because Hodor.

It could go online and people could even customise their characters or even their own houses for battles, with House words and sigils so people remember who one-shotted them from across the field and can curse your name every night – Cersei, Illyn Payne, Joffrey, The Hound, NOOBKILLER47, Polliver, The Tickler…

And last, but certainly not least – a GOOD version of Game of Thrones: The RPG.

If you ever played Game of Thrones: The RPG, you’ll know that it didn’t quite measure up to people’s expectations. So, kick that one aside, and make the one we all really want! For an example, I reccomend you all go online and look at one of the best Skyrim mods ever invented – one which turns Skyrim entirely into Westeros. Its amazing.

That’s the game I want. An enormous open-world RPG, where you can create your own character and manage your own skills just like in the Elder Scrolls, where you are free to explore Westeros as you please. I’ve not seen much of Dorne or across the Narrow Sea, so I can just walk there and look! Pure freedom to see everything the Seven Kingdoms has to offer.

Not to mention all the quests and campaigns that could be offered. I mean, think about how much is happening in Game of Thrones all the time, its not just one guy’s adventure, its thousands! The narrative and world background is vast and endless, and author George RR Martin has provided a heaping feast of stories for game developers to dig into and turn into incredible side quests or faction based campaigns.

The range of weaponry would be amazing as well, you could hunt through the realm searching for the best of swords, valaryian steel, which requires a long and challenging set of missions in order to acquire. Or, you could try and kill one of King Joffrey’s kingsguard knights in order to steal their awesome gold armour and wear it yourself.

So, do you hear me HBO? George RR Martin? We need these games – we need them bad! We need them more than Jorah needs to get out of the friendzone. Hear us! Make these games!
