The boss fight is one of the most iconic elements in video games. Since Double Dragon and Super Mario Bros, players have acclimatized themselves with the battle against the big bad boss after fending off hordes of lesser enemies.
Depending on the overall difficulty of the game or the boss itself, some bosses are more satisfying to beat than others. However, it should be said that not every boss comes with a battle. Some bosses are simply defeated through the story or some means other than combat, but beating them is satisfying all the same.
With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of the most satisfying bosses to beat. Read on to find out who we think the best of them are.

This iconic character is in most, if not all of the Mario games as its final boss. Mario usually goes up against him in an effort to rescue Princess Toadstool from his scaly clutches. Even getting to Bowser is a total challenge, so beating him (after repeated tries, of course) is incredibly satisfying.
The Overseer is the first character who speaks to you in Fallout, and the every last. This old coot chooses you to go out in to the world and retrieve the Water Chip and save Vault 13 from certain doom. Depending on whether you have the Blood Mess character trait, you’ll be either exiled from Vault 13, or be exiled and slaughter The Overseer in a terrifically brutal, and satisfying fashion.
This totally optional boss fight was easily the hardest battle in the game due to Kangaxx’s abilities as a demi-lich. Kangaxx could instantly kill members of your party—destroying them permanently and forcing a you to reload the game as there were no means to resurrect them from the dead if killed by his attacks. You had to be completely prepared to face a demi-lich with a wide assortment of scrolls and spells to face him down. The ring you get for killing him is one of the best in the game.
Arthas has a lot of history in the Warcraft universe. Players first controlled him in Warcraft 3, and got to witness his turn towards the dark side after falling to the temptations of Frostmourne. His story is continued with the Wrath of the Lich King expansion for World of Warcraft, where players have a chance to kill him and bring an end to his story arc.
Malthael is the titular Reaper of Souls in Diablo’s universe of sanctuary. An avenging angel who decides to destroy all of mankind due to their half-demon lineage, Malthael can only be stopped by the Nephalem. Fighting him makes a lot of the pain and suffering you go through in RoS’s storyline worth your while—and it opens up Adventure Mode, which is a huge plus.
You met Diablo in battle face to face after defeating 16 levels of his minions. Unless you were equipped with some majorly powerful Uniques, taking him down was no easy feat, especially not for first timers. Most Diablo players went on to defeat him countless times and it never got old.
Shadow of the Colossus is one game where players got very emotionally attached to the story and its characters, so beating that final colossus and triggering the end of the game was certain to bring tears to players’ eyes.
This raccoon appears in every Animal Crossing game, forcing the players to take out a loan in the game’s currency, Bells, to pay for their house. Nook essentially forces the player into indentured servitude, and beating him means running out of expansions for your house. Master Hand is the final boss of the Super Smash Bros games. It is the entity that acts as the creator of the game’s universe and also serves as its primary antagonist. Beating Master Hand and Crazy Hand is is even more satisfying if you beat him without taking a single hit.
