The year is 2015, and the horror genre is alive and well. Despite facing a few setbacks over the past few years, the genre couldn't be more alive now thanks to the popularity of games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Alien: Isolation, both of which were released not too long ago.
The popularity of horror games spans across a multitude of different settings: from 19th century horror that seems ripped right out of the pages of Dan Simmons' Drood to Alien-inspired science fiction.
In this list, we take a look at the top 10 games that are bound to scare the living daylights out of us on the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Have a look at what we've come up with, and be sure to leave us comments about what you're looking forward to playing the most, or if you think we missed anything.
Without further ado, here are the top 10 horror games of 2015.
Dollhouse
Dollhouse's plot is centered on the mind of a therapist suspended from his job, a lonely housewife, and a disturbed young child. Each of their lives is interconnected, and it's up to the player to decide how everything plays out in this non-linear, self-driven horror experience.
Call of Cthulhu
Developed by Frogwares and Focus Home Interactive, Call of Cthulhu is the latest horror game in the long-running setting developed by author H.P. Lovecraft. It's based on the pen and paper RPG of the same name, but beyond that, little else is known about the game.
The Forest
Developed by Endnight Games, The Forest is a terrifying survival horror game set in a lush and beautiful forest environment. As the lone survivor of a plane crash, the player finds themselves in a mysterious forest battling to save alive against a society of cannibalistic mutants.
Outlast 2
This survival-horror game is the sequel to the first Outlast, taking place in the same universe. Developed by Red Barrel Games, the first game left an indelible mark on the genre and the sequel is expected to do the same thing. Little has been revealed about the game, but it's pretty promising given the pedigree of its developer.
Doom
More of a first person shooter than a true horror game, Doom nonetheless fits on this list given the horror tropes the franchise has embraced. It remains to be seen how scary id Software will make the game, but we're counting on Doom being an absolutely visceral experience.
Until Dawn
Until Dawn is a true horror experience in the vein of horror movies like Scream and Nightmare on Elm Street. Players step into the shoes of eight terrified friends trapped in a mountain retreat where a deranged killer is on the loose. What's not to like?
Fatal Frame V
Originally released as Fatal Frame: Oracle of the Sodden Raven (what a weird name) in Japan late last year, Fatal Frame V is slated to scare North American audiences sometime this year. Like previous games in the series, players are equipped with a magical camera that allows them to exorcise ghosts.
SOMA
SOMA is a new science fiction horror game from the makers of Amnesia and Penumbra. Set for release in 2015, SOMA takes players down the cursed corridors of an underwater remote research facility in which machines take on human characteristics. Creepy.
Routine
Set aboard an abandoned moon base, Routine promises to deliver scares through its procedurally generated environments. Your job is to find enough data to uncover the truth behind the strange disappearance of everyone stationed on the Lunar Research Station.
Silent Hills
Developed by Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro, Silent Hills is the sequel to the Silent Hill series of games. It was first promoted by the "P.T." demo on the PlayStation 4, and revealed to be a Silent Hill franchise game upon players finishing the game. Silent Hills promises to make us soil ourselves. If it's anything like P.T., it probably will.
