Countless hours have been pumped into Destiny and while frustration is often an emotion connected to the game, there’s also plenty of elation to be found as players overcome the game’s biggest changes, unlock the most sought-after loot, and make friends of random strangers encountered during the game’s various strikes.
Here we list 10 of the best moments that Guardians can experience in Bungie’s shooter. Some may not take as much work as others, but each one is something to be proud of on the road to maxing out your light score. You might even make some friends along the way.
Bungie has now nerfed Three of Coins, and while we can still expect more purple and yellow drops than we ever got in vanilla Destiny, it’s a pretty great feeling to see something other than green or blue. Of course, the Cryptarchs have a habit of decoding the same weapon several times from multiple engrams but you never know, you might just find that scout rifle you’ve long been searching for.
Legendary engrams are nice, but exotics are better. The Taken King has overhauled how exotics work, leading to the peculiar situation in which uncommons and rares can be as good as or better than legendries and you can still only equip a single exotic weapon and armour piece at any given time. Still, there are few things in Destiny better than your purple engram transforming into yellow.
The Taken King has overhauled the Vanguard Streak buff to increase your Vanguard reputation and the likelihood of you earning legendary engrams by defeating strike bosses. Vanguard Streaks were present in the base game but didn’t really do much, so like many other things in Destiny, the new expansion offers a significant improvement here too.
To earn a Vanguard Streak, play through a strike playlist without exiting to orbit or (hopefully) encountering any network errors.
The main challenge in The Taken King, especially after Oryx bites the dust, is meeting the light level recommendation for missions, strikes, and of course, the King’s Fall raid. These are often well above where you can expect to be upon reaching level 40, with the daily missions now being level 41 with a light recommendation of 240. Finding the weapons and armour you need to reach these specs can take time but it’s definitely worth it, not least for the loot you pick up along the way.
Bounties are most useful under level 40, as they typically grant 2,500 to 3,000 XP but completing them can still yield valuable resources, help you find new engrams, and improve your Vanguard and faction reputation even when you hit the level cap.
Some can be tough, with very specific conditions attached, but many are pretty straightforward ways of advancing through the game. The Taken King makes them even easier, as you no longer have to return to the Tower to turn them in once completed.
A little green symbol by the Tower usually means the Postmaster has something special waiting for you. Packages can include Strange Coins and Motes of Light, used for buying exotics from Xur, weapons, armour, or engrams.
You can also pick up raw upgrade materials and faction reputation. The postmaster will also pick up certain engrams you may have left behind during your last mission.
The Agent of the Nine still has a monopoly on exotic sales and given that Xur is only in the Tower for a brief period each weekend, it’s all the sweeter when he turns up with a weapon or armour piece you’ve been looking for for months.
Many players picked up the now-nerfed Gjallarhorn rocket launcher exotic when he showed up with it a few weeks before The Taken King came out after waiting months to get one without success.
Your Super doesn’t always charge up as quickly as you’d like, but when that yellow bar is full you get to unleash your wrath on the opposing team and it is beautiful. If you time it right, you can take out four or more Guardians in a single burst and even turn the tide of matches in the process.
Just don’t miss, your Super is powerful and you don’t want to waste it.
Most Crucible matches are team based but Rumble sees you all on your lonesome against five other players. No matter which game mode you choose, there are few things sweeter than seeing yourself at the top of the leader board when all’s said and done.
It’s even better if your team completely dominates the opposition and the announcer says he’s seen enough, declaring in your favour.
Of course, Destiny being Destiny, that doesn’t mean you’ll get anything but racking up an impressive k/d is more important, right? Right?
Strikes are some of Destiny’s most intense activities and perfect for forging new bonds of friendship based on “shoot the weak spots” and “revive me already” which is essentially what most strikes boil down to sooner or later. If you all make it through in one piece well, you know what they say, the strike team that wins together asks to be your PSN friend. You might even swap real names.
