We're now in the Beta and we have some exciting tips and Titanfall gameplay footage and screenshots to show you. If you haven’t already seen it, you can watch the Titanfall trailer below:
Titanfall developer Respawn have created a completely new breed of first person shooter, meaning that there are some things to get used to when you’re starting out. To begin with, your mobility as a Pilot is vastly increased from traditional FPS games like Call of Duty or Battlefield, allowing you to double jump and run along walls when you’re not in your Titan. As a consequence, you will find that the gameplay in Titanfall is exponentially more three-dimensional, giving you the option to climb high up to the tops of buildings in order to gain a vantage point over your enemies. Killing enemy players, by the way, reduces cooldown on your Titan, allowing you to get it sooner in the match.
Any experienced FPS player will realise that additional mobility in Titanfall is a blessing, not a curse. With a little practice, you can wall run and double jump your way across the map with ease, which is beneficial not only for sneaking up on unsuspecting enemies, but also for evading Titans and getting up to a good vantage point in order to take out an enemy Titan.
Of course, enemy Pilots will be just as mobile as you are, so in order to defend against their onslaughts you will have to maintain a high level of situational awareness. Aside from glancing at your minmap frequently, it’s also a good idea to take an exploratory approach to navigating the map, incorporating the parkour aspect of the game as much as possible.
It’s important to engage enemy Titans early on, as they are often the key to winning a match. The best ways to take on a Titan are either to jump right onto it, pull off the panel to expose the inner circuitry and fire repeatedly into the weak spot until the Titan goes down. Of course, this is a risky tactic unless the enemy Titan is relatively secluded, as you will expose yourself to the enemy team (whether they are on the ground, on roofs, or also in Titans). If the player is inside their Titan, they can also jump out and attempt to engage you, which is one of the most effective ways for them to counter. If you’re in a team, a very effective way to deal with a Titan is to take a teammate up to a good vantage point and both use your rocket launchers, being careful to keep moving and take cover wherever possible, or even move between roofs if you can.
When you’re in your Titan, one of the best things you can do is to use the smokescreen: it can be used both offensively and defensively as it damages enemies who venture into the smog cloud. This can be extremely useful for getting out of a near-death situation when you’re in your Titan, as it generally means that you can create an escape route for yourself while your shields recharge.
Something to try and do when not in your Titan is to hack Spectres. Spectres are bots (though they are tougher than simple Grunts) and they can be hacked by approaching them and pressing X (E on PC). Once hacked, they will follow you around and fight for you until you die, giving you an additional boost in firepower.
The UK Titanfall release date is the 14th March on Xbox One and PC, but those who will be playing on Xbox 360 will unfortunately have to wait until the 28th March.
