In Dark Souls 2 there are 4 styles of magic that your character is able to use, including, miracles, hexes, sorceries and pyromanies. These spells offer you tactical advantages within enemy combat scenarios and can be cast from any range. In order to delve into magic in Dark Souls 2 right from the start of the game, select the Sorcerer class, as they'll open with enough intelligence to use Sorcery, or alternatively the Cleric Class as they begin with enough faith to use Miracles. To use Sorcery and Hexes you’ll need to acquire either the Sorcerer’s Staff or the Bone Staff, to cast Miracles you’ll require a talisman such as the Cleric’s Sacred Chime and to cast Pyromacy you’ll need to collect the Piromance Flame. Where to find the Dark Souls 2 sorcerer’s staff
Visit Calhillion the Sorcerer on the far side to No-Man’s Wharf, cross the docks and up the stairs into town, take a right and weave down the dock. Find him resting towards the end of the Pier. Here you can purchase a Sorcerer's staff along with a selection of spells. If you haven’t got enough souls to fund these purchases, then visit our guide on farming souls before continuing.

Dark Souls 2 Hexes 
Hexes are a unique school of spells which require both Intelligence and Faith points as well as a staff or sacred chime, dependent upon the spell. Hexes offer a wide variety of spells, catering for a variety of different situations, and although some may be difficuly to use effectively, in the right hands they can be incredibly useful. They require steep investments and management of both intelligence and faith, demanding a careful balance in stats and patience until you reach a point where you can use a variety of them. Many of the hexes absorb more than one attunement slot in order to use, so bare in mind that investments into Attunements may want to be considered before continuing.
