War Thunder online is a popular arcade flight shooter that also doubles as a semi-realistic flight simulator that was developed by Gaijin Entertainment. A few years back there was discussion among the War thunder community wondering about the direction War Thunder would go in and if they would cater more towards the Arcade crowd, or slowly take the game into a realistic simulator mode. In a poll conducted by the community, 84% said that they wanted the game to have more realistic planes and controls.
The War Thunder developers seem to be slowly working towards a more realistic game mode as recent updates have made tweaks to the physics and how planes behave in the air. Gaijin has also recently launched a tutorial series to teach new players how to fly in realistic and simulator mode to help novice pilots make that transition into the harder difficulty setting.
For those of you not familiar with War Thunder‘s game modes, they have a simple arcade mode that almost anyone can play, a realistic mode that is slightly more challenging but still has AI control assist, and then the full simulator mode that gives players complete control over their aircraft without any help at all. The latter game mode most players steer clear of because they complain that it is far too difficult to learn, so most just stick to playing Arcade mode.
War Thunder’s main goal is to eventually create their World War gaming mode, which is rumored to pit Land, Air, and Sea vehicles against one another in one giant battlefield. If this is the case, the developers will need more players playing the simulator mode and ready to take to the skies without crashing their plane on take off.
The below video showcases how the War Thunder Simulator mode works and walks new players through all the steps they need for setting up their controls- ranging from using their keyboard to flying to buying a joystick, looking around the cockpit to spot enemy aircraft either using your mouse and keyboard or a VR headset, taking off from the ground, choosing your gun loadout and bullet type, as well as actually flying and engaging in dog fighting combat. You can watch the full video tutorial that I linked to down below.
Players are hoping that since Gaijin has made the above video that it will encourage more players to jump into Simulator battles to join the fight, and that Gaijin will show more love towards the Simulator game mode to add new content to help steer more players into the more realistic Simulator game modes and leave behind the simplistic Arcade battles.
But what about you? Do you prefer the Simulator game mode or the Arcade game mode? Comment below and share your thoughts. For more information you can visit War Thunder Online’s official website to learn more.
