The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Monster Guide - How to Beat the Wolf King

When you first take control of Ciri in The Witcher 3, you’ll soon come across a foe known as the Wolf King. The villagers fear him; Gretka says no one can kill him – y’know, the usual shtick. But don’t worry; he’s a really easy fight as long as you do exactly what the game prompts you to do before the big fight.

As you begin your first mission with Ciri, you’ll notice that she’s a lot faster on her feet (her dodge is so pretty to look at) but players won’t be able to access the inventory or use Signs when playing as her. However, her health does regenerate quickly whenever you take damage, so there are ups and downs to playing as her.

As you make your way through the woods, be sure to gather as many ingredients as you can, even if it seems pointless, considering that you’ll probably be switching back to Geralt soon enough anyways. There are four ingredients that you should collect before taking on the Wolf King, and they are:

  • Dog tallow
  • Wolf liver
  • Fool’s parsley
  • Wolfsbane

These items are fairly easy to acquire – just kill the small wolves you come across and loot for them, and also be sure to check all the plants in the area. The game will prompt you to look for these items as well.

Before long, Ciri will come to discover a mangled up body. It is important that you examine the body thoroughly and select the ‘Summing up’ dialogue option when it’s available. This will allow Ciri to correctly identify the type of beast she’s up against and help her brew the right potion.

Once you’ve examined the body and collected all the required ingredients, follow Gretka through the woods and you’ll soon reach the cave where the Wolf King resides. In spite of his intimidating name and his scary appearance, this boss is extremely easy to kill, especially if you did all the previous steps correctly and brewed the right potion.

The Wolf King has some very fast swipes, but Ciri is faster; just keep to his sides and his back, and he’ll go down in no time at all. And that’s it. Congratulations! You’ve just slain your very first beast with Ciri in The Witcher 3. Well done, you.
