The Witcher 3 Monster Guide: How to Easily Beat the Dragon Contract

Most contracts in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are pretty simple for Geralt of Rivia. He’s studied monsters and their mannerisms for the majority of his life, so it isn’t very often when he’s thrown for a loop. Name just about any monster and Geralt can tell you what its likes, dislikes, and hunting practices are, and maybe even the color of its poop. But mention something mythical, like say… a dragon, and then you have one confused witcher.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt‘s Dragon contract (a Level 28 quest) has players dealing with this very situation. Head over to the village of Fyresdal in the Skellige Isles and talk to the elder about the terrible deaths that have occurrednear the small village. The elder will inform you, quite energetically, that they are under attack by a fierce dragon. Naturally, this leaves our white-haired hero a bit confused. Dragons don’t exist in the world of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, at least not how we imagine dragons to be. Still, Geralt is a man who helps people, and won’t turn down a paying contract, so time to do a bit of investigating.

After speaking to a villager who just lost her sons, you can check the area of the attack, and you will eventually find the Dragon’s nest. It turns out that the Dragon in question is actually a Forktail, which is still a pretty nasty beast. Its nest sits at the top of an old siege tower, so you’re going to have to bait the Forktail if you want to be able to fight it. Head back to the village and ask for a sheep (a Forktail’s favorite meal).

When you collect the sheep, you will be given a set of instructions on how to successfully guide the poor, unsuspecting animal to the Dragon’s nest. You can use those if you’re fine with being frustrated, or you can just cast the Axii sign on the sheep and run directly to the nest. This method is much quicker and will allow you to get right down to business. Once the sheep stands next to the siege tower, the Forktail, named Dragon, will swoop down and attack.

When fighting Dragon, there are a few things you should know. First off, this draconid is fast and will constantly try to close the distance between you two. Secondly, it has some seriously poisonous attacks at close and long range. When Dragon sits still, be ready to dodge left or right so that you don’t get hit by its venomous spit. Its weaknesses are Aard, and burning.

If you happen to have bombs (Dancing Stars are my personal favorite), you can actually end this fight very quickly, even if you are at a substantially lower level than the Forktail. As soon as the battle begins, cast Aard to bring Dragon down, then toss a bomb directly at it to cause some heavy burning damage. This will not only send the Forktail into a bout of high-pitched screeching, but will also leave it completely vulnerable for you to move in and slay it as well. Depending on your strength, one bomb may be enough. But if you see Dragon start to twist, get out of range and prepare to throw a second bomb to seal the deal.

There you have it, another deadly contract completed quite easily. Were you excited to hunt a dragon? Were you expecting fire-breathing, and gold-coveting? Let us know in the comments. For more guides, tips, tricks, and information on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt be sure to check out our handy wiki.
