Ravenshire Castle is the fifth, and last, of the Raven Series of games, and it can be considered as Lolapps’, the original developer of the series, swan song, as they have already been dissolved by 6waves Studio, a Hong Kong based social gaming development company. Ravenshire Castle was actually developed after Lolapps has been dissolved, and development was completed under new game studio Silver Lake, which was created solely to finish this particular game, with a handful of original Lolapps developers on the lead.
The result of this endeavor is Ravenshire Castle, a testament to Lolapps’ dedication and love for the game, and a great tribute to the series that started it all for them, in the hopes that their last hurrah would also be their best.
Concept
Ravenshire Castle is a building simulation game that implements PvP and stealth based mechanics. Players must build up cash and resources in order to build up and improve on their kingdoms, while sneaking into rival kingdoms and looting them without getting caught.
Currency
Coins are the main currency in Ravenshire Castle. These are used to purchase anything from new rooms, farm plots, stations, decorations, and any other items that can help you within the game. There are a variety of ways that coins can be earned, including completing quests, harvesting crops, helping neighbors, and successfully sneaking into rivals’ castles.
Shire stuff are premium currency in the game. They can be used to skip quests, purchase premium items that cannot be found normally, as well as special items that give great benefits to the player for possessing them. Shire stuff can be purchased by using Facebook credits.
Energy
Energy is used whenever actions are performed, such as planting, harvesting, sneaking, and doing quests). Energy can be replenished over time, or you can use an energy item to fill up your energy, so that you can perform more tasks without having to wait.
Experience and Leveling Up.
Experience is earned while performing a variety of tasks. Once enough experience has been gained, the player will level up, increasing your maximum energy capacity as well as unlocking various items in the shop for purchase.
Take note, however, the castle levels, farming levels, character levels, and farming levels are primarily independent from each other, and doing specific tasks would affect only a few choice entities, so it would be wise to perform all available quests, collections, or items in order to even out leveling up of all your resources.
Gardening
Farming in Ravenshire Castle works pretty much like in other building sim games. First you have to purchase a plot and select a crop to plant it with. In time, the crops would mature, and you can harvest them for coins and resources. Be mindful of harvest time, however, as crops that were not collected for an amount of time would wither and die, requiring the player to plant crops again and wait some more.
Items and Resources
Ravenshire Castle includes a lot of items that can be used to adorn your castle. Most of them can produce coins as well as additional resources in order to create even better items. Some resources can be found around the castle, such as wood from the forest outside your kingdom, while some can be pretty hard to procure. Some resources would require players to sneak into rivals’ and other players’ kingdoms, where they can collect silver or golden crests which would be used to construct items within your own kingdom.
Fairies must also be created in order to complete building items. They can be raised by purchasing a berry pot and planting certain types of berries on them. These work pretty much like farming, and collection time must be considered as berries would wither and be wasted if not collected within a set period.
Items such as stations will also help you defend your castle against sneak attacks from rival players. You can purchase guards that will make it much more difficult for other players to sneak around, protecting your items from being looted.
Managing and creating items and resources will be the bulk and main objectives of players in Ravenshire Castle. They may also ask friends for gifts to help them acquire resources, and they can also send gifts back to help out. Other hard to require items or resources can also be purchased at the shop, using either coins or shire stuff.
Sneaking
Sneaking into other kingdoms and looting rivals and other players is what truly makes Ravenshire Kingdom unique from other similar games. It has PvP type mechanics that doesn’t center around directly doing battle. Rather, players must sneak into rivals’ and neighbors’ kingdoms, either as part of a quest or for the purpose of collecting necessary resources for building items, and must successfully enter rooms and loot from items without getting caught by guards. Doing sneak attacks successfully would earn you tons of cash as well as experience points, and it can be pretty enjoyable to outsmart other players, too.
Of course, other players can sneak up on your kingdom, too. Thus, it is important to build up good defenses by purchasing guards to better defend your castle and the treasures within. Being successfully looted would mean that your items would have to be restored in order to continue generating coins. Of course, payback is necessary, so you have to build up necessary resources so that you can do some sneaking of your own.
Audio and Video
Ravenshire Castle uses 6waves’ Fliso Engine, which, despite its 2D graphics, gives the game a 3D-like appeal. Animations also do not slow down as much even when there are many items on screen moving at the same time. Thus, lag will not be experienced as much when playing this game, and user controls will be pretty much smooth and consistent all throughout.
Ravenshire Castle also has ten different tracks that play randomly, tuning in and out throughout the game so that players will not have to bear listening to the same tunes over and over again.
Conclusion
Ravenshire Castle can be considered as a great game, with its innovative PvP mechanics and focus on the requiring of various tasks in order to complete creation of various items and treasures within the kingdom. If Lolapps aimed to save the best for last, then Ravenshire surely foots the bill as one of the best in the Raven series, and it can be considered as a great send off for the series’ original creators.
The game can provide players with countless hours of game time, building rooms and constructing items. They would also have a great time outdoing each other by sneaking into castles and looting. The game greatly melds both single and multiplayer aspects of gaming into one cohesive and enjoyable product. Graphics are also very smooth, providing players with a much less frustrating time with regards to lags and hangs.
Ravenshire Castle is a labor of love for Lolapps, and they would surely be able to see their efforts bear fruit as gamers would get to enjoy this last, and probably the best, installment of the classic Raven series.
Ravenshire Castle was released on May 3, 2012 as a Facebook social game. It was developed by Silver Lake/Lolapps and was published by 6waves Studio.
