This is the main section of the game. From here, you can jump right into a
variety of modes.

Essentially, this is “Quick Play” mode. There are two teams set up, and you
just have to pick a team and jump right in to play.

—>FANTASY FOOTBALL<—
Fantasy Football bases itself on real life football results. This is just a
tool to help out your Fantasy Football game. It keeps track of all that content
and information for you.

—>MY MADDEN<—
From here, you can customize rosters and teams to tailor the Madden NFL
experience how you see fit.

—>ONLINE<—
To play this game online, you will need to have an EA Origins account. After
obtaining one of these, you need to put in your Online Pass code, and then
you will finally be able to play games online! Your Career Mode can also be
connected to the Online modes so that it is all streamlined and working
together.

There is an “Inbox” on the Main Page. This will collect and organize game
invites and messages for you. If you are an active part of the Madden NFL 13
online community, be sure to check there often.

2. Career

Career is the meat and potatoes of Madden NFL 13. First, you must choose
whether you want to do a “Player” career or if you want to play through seasons
as a Coach.

—>PLAYER<—
If you choose to take a player through Career, first you have to choose the
player. Using “Make My Face”, you can actually have a character created that
looks like you. Or you can create your own player. Furthermore, you can choose
a currently active player from the roster or an NFL Legend.

After choosing your player, you need to get used to the interface. In “News
Center”, you can see various headlines about the upcoming and current season.
“My Career” will show the goals you have and your progress there. “My Actions”
is where all the main actions go down. You can also check your overall career
stats and more all from these menus.

When you’re ready to start your career, go to “My Actions”, and choose to start
your career. First, you will be able to run Practice scenarios. These scenarios
are used to gain XP that can be spent to upgrade your player. This will in turn
allow you to do better in the games. You can practice each week before games.

First, you will have to go through pre-season games. You can skip each week if
you’d like. Then you have season games, and assuming you do well enough in the
season, you will move on to the playoffs. From there, you can make it to the
championship games and ultimately the Superbowl. At the end of your career,
your goal is to make it into the NFL Hall of Fae.

—>COACH<—
Your other Career path is to be a Coach. Coaches have to order around their
players, though you don’t actually get to control any of the players directly
in this mode. Once again, you can create your own coach, choose an active one,
or pick one of the legendary coaches that are available.

Coaches earn XP and can level up as well. Their goals for each season are
typically to reach the Superbowl. Smart goal indeed. Coaches also have to deal
with trading and cutting players from their roster, so there is more of a
managerial aspect to Career Mode coaching.

—>PRACTICE SCENARIOS<—
These are tutorial-like scenarios that can be tested out before the game each
week. They are very beneficial as XP can be gained from playing these. When
you choose a Career as a specific player, not all of the Practice Scenarios
will be available, only the ones that deal with the player in question. If you
choose to be a Coach for Career, you can see all the practice scenarios and
test them all out from the get-go.

Here are strategies to help you complete each practice scenario and earn the
most XP:

3rd Quarter Tie
===============
Difficulty: Easy
In this scenario, it’s the third quarter. The score is tied 10 to 10, and you
have to win the game. Simple enough. Obviously, the first thing you will want
to do when you have the ball is be incredibly aggressive. After the second
down, I’d start running the ball safer to ensure that you can gain some
yardage.

After getting in the lead, focus all your efforts on defending the ball. In
fact, I’d just run out the clock. Avoid throwing the ball much at all as to
keep interceptions from happening. Just run it down the field whenever you have
it, and do your best to counter the offense when you’re playing defense.

10 Point Lead
=============
Difficulty: Easy
This is very similar to the last scenario, except the other team has no points
going into this one. You have to keep the lead until the game ends. Once again,
it starts in the third quarter. If you gain points, then that just makes it
that much harder for the opposing players.

However, keep in mind that the other time doesn’t have to win, they just have
to get ahead of you in points.

Easy Win
========
Difficulty: Easy
This scenario begins in the second quarter. Here you are winning by three
points. Now you just have to win the rest of the game. It’s just another
variation of the last two scenarios. The same strategies will apply here just
fine.

Cake Walk
=========
Difficulty: Easy
It’s the end of the third quarter. Your team is winning by 16 points. Now
finish the game. This is basically just one quarter of football. In order to
catch up, the opposing team has to score two touchdowns. This is very unlikely
to happen, even if you don’t have any idea what you’re doing.

Offense
=======
Difficulty: Normal
A full game, this practice sees you playing on Offense. Win the game.
Obviously, your goal as an offensive player will be to get the ball down the
field and into the endzone for a touchdown. If you’re the QB, you’ll want to
be throwing it or running it strategically to avoid getting a 4th down.

Defense
=======
Difficulty: Normal
This is exactly like the last scenario, but roles reversed. This time the main
focus is on your defensive abilities. It’s yet again a full game of football,
but you’ll need to keep the other team from scoring.

=========
The Grind
=========
Difficulty: Normal
There are three minutes left on the clock in the 4th quarter. Your team is
down by six, and there are two different options available to you. For one, you
can try to run the ball into the endzone for a touchdown and end it, or there’s
another method that’s a bit trickier on one end, but safer than a touchdown.

Your other option is to tie the game up. You can do this with two field goals.
After that, the game will go into overtime and the next team to score will make
out with the victory. This is tougher on the later end, but it’s safer than
going for the touchdown.

Personally, I recommend going for the touchdown. Yes, it will be more of a
challenge, but at the same time, it’s faster, so if you can fail, you can
just keep trying over and over again.

Halftime
========
Difficulty: Normal
The game is tied 7-7 at Halftime. You have to stop the other team from scoring
another touchdown while also getting ahead yourself. The main priority will
first to keep the other team from scoring, and then you can focus on trying to
score yourself. I’d avoid long passes that may be intercepted, as this can be
a sure fire way for the other team to put more points on the board.

Hold the Lead
=============
Difficulty: Normal
2:21 is left on the clock. The other team can’t make a touchdown because you’re
only up by 4 points. If they get the touchdown, you lose the scenario. Try to
push them back as much as possible, and go straight for the QB each time, just
in case he goes for a run.

=================
3rd Quarter Rally
=================
Difficulty: Hard
The 3rd quarter has just started and you’re down by 10 points. This is a Coach
oriented scenario. You have to “rally” the team to win by really pushing them
to the endzone.

No Mistakes
===========
Difficulty: Hard
Your team is winning by 3 points, there’s 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter,
and the opponent is just outside field goal range. Basically, the challenge
here is to keep them pushed back. If their QB is running back, go for them to
try to make them lose yards, which will in turn make this scenario much
easier.

=============
Uphill Battle
=============
Difficulty: Hard
Your team is down by one touchdown and there are 4 minutes remaining in the
4th quarter. Get a touchdown to win. Run the ball constantly. Yet again, a
stray interception could cost you the scenario. If you’re on the third down, I
would then go for a pass because it’s unlikely you’ll be able to get first at
that point anyway.

Close Call
==========
Difficulty: Hard
Your team is winning by 2 points and there’s 45 seconds left in the game. The
opponents are just outside field goal range again. Stop them from gaining any
yardage. Focus on the QB.

=============
Comeback King
=============
Difficulty: Hard
Down by 8 points, 3 minutes left. You have to score a touchdown, and then score
another point, either through the field goal or running the ball. Go for the
touchdown, and then for the field goal, is my recommendation. Field goals are
easier and safer to pull off.

==========
The Trench
==========
Difficulty: Hard
35 seconds left in the 4th quarter. Your team is up by 7. Your opponents are
on the 10 yard line and you have to keep them from scoring a touchdown or else
they will surely win the game. This one is incredibly tough because of how
close your opponents are to the endzone. Your best bet is to try to make your
defensive line as wide as possible to cover all the bases, and hope they try
to throw it. If they try to throw it, you have a good chance of being able to
take out the catcher before they can get their hands on the ball. Well, a
better chance than taking out the QB and keeping him from the endzone when he’s
that close.

2 Minute Drill
==============
Difficulty: Hard
2 minute drill, you’re down by three points, and your opponents have the ball.
First get the ball back from your opponents. Make the plays as short as
possible, and then continue to do so while you run the ball back down the
field.

Final Stand
===========
Difficulty: Normal
You’re winning by 2 points and there’s 1 minute left in the game. The opponent
has the ball on the 40 yard line. This is actually not that tough. Keep the
plays long to run down the clock.

Ain’t Over Yet
==============
Difficulty: Hard
Beginning of the second half. Down by 14 points. Win the game. There’s not
much else to it. If you’re playing as the Coach, keep in mind that the game
will only give you XP for the Coach.

End Zone Protection
===================
Difficulty: Hard
2 minutes left on the clock. The opponent has the ball on the 20 yard line,
and you have 6 point lead. Yes, this is just another variation on past
scenarious.

Clutch
======
Difficulty: Very Hard
Down by 21 points. Middle of the 3rd quarter. Yup. This is called “Clutch” for
a reason. Play incredibly aggressively. Usually I tell you not to throw long
passes because of interceptions, but you HAVE to take risks here. This is going
to take multiple tries and a lot of luck to rebound from being down by 21
points, but it’s not impossible.

RedZone
=======
Difficulty: Very Hard
Winning by 1 point and there’s 1 minute left in the game. Opponent is on the
5 yard line. Make sure the QB is covered, but focus on the players that he
could throw the ball to, as this is the most likely way they’re going to score
here.

Hopeless
========
Difficulty: Very hard
Down by 16, end of the 3rd quarter. Just a normal game, and it’s actually not
as hard as the other scenario like this. Yes, you have less time to catch up,
but there is also less points to catch up to as well.

==========
Tough Road
==========
Difficulty: Hard
Post-penalty, your opponents have the ball. This one is actually pretty damn
easy compared to some of the last few scenarios. After getting the ball back,
just treat this as a normal game.

=========
Bad Start
=========
Difficulty: Hard
Opponents have socred three touchdowns, comeback. Play aggressively as possible
at first, but then cool down after each touchdown you score. You don’t want to
give up the ball on accident or take any penalties.

=================
Circle the Wagons
=================
Difficulty: Very Hard
35-3 in the third quarter. This is nigh impossible. Check out the strategies
for the other comeback scenarios and apply them here. I recommend beating all
the other scenarios before even thinking of trying this one out.

5. Wii U Version Differences

This guide was created using the Wii U version of the game. The Wii U version
of Madden NFL 13 has ALL the features of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3
versions of the game, with the exception of the new physics engine, which has
been removed in favor of canned animations.

The Wii U version of the game allows players to draw hot routes on the GamePad
touchscreen. Furthermore, players are able to select plays using the GamePad
screen as well.

Another feature of the Wii U version of the game is playing the entire game
on the GamePad. To switch all the action to the GamePad, at the start menu,
hold down the “minus” button for five seconds. You’ll know the switch has been
successful when sound starts coming out of the GamePad.
