The Protoss versus Terran matchup is perhaps not as clean cut as the Zerg matchup as there are much more variables involved, leading to the Protoss player being frustrated whenever a Terran comes up in ladder. In these cases, you either go with Colossi, High Templar with storms, or maybe Dark Templars. Other than that, perhaps an early all-in to take him out before he gets to macro. But there have been other solutions that have become rather successful, like this strategy.

Overview

This strategy was created and popularized by a 14-year-old Korean prodigy by the name of Jang Hyun-woo, better known as Creator of Team Prime. This build has been there since 2011, but it has remained effective throughout this time in Wings of Liberty due to its macro-oriented nature.

This build is focused on the late game, wherein you start off with a 1-gate fast expand, then get enough units to defend your bases while you put down two Forges to get the upgrades. Your unit composition will mostly be Chargelot/Archon/Colossus to deliver maximum damage to as many enemy units as possible at any given time, especially since it’s more certain that the Terran will almost always go bio.

This is about getting 3/3 upgrades as quickly as you can from two Forges way before the Terran can. You then engage the opponent as soon as you’re certain of your upgrade advantage. While you’re getting there, you defend with Zealots and Sentries. Since this build is planned out right to the 18-minute mark, it’s easy to execute for beginners since all you have to remember is the build itself and be able to macro defend, and the only timing you need to remember is the 18-minute mark.

Strategy and Execution

How you proceed through this build does depend on what you scout in your opponent’s base. Here are three scenarios that are possible in this PvT.

Scenario 1: The Oppoent Goes For A Gasless Opening

Your opponent is just going heavy on Marines at this point, so you will have to go straight to High Templars with Psionic Storm. While you’re getting to that tech, you can get a Zealot/Sentry army at first and scout with a single Stalker to know when he’ll attack, how big his forces are, and if he expands.

The way there will be quite gas-heavy, so you should get all four of your geysers quickly. Once you have High Templars out and Psionic Storm research is done, then you should be ready for whatever comes. The only thing that you really need to worry about are drops from the back, which you should be able to take care of if you have some Templars there to feedback the Medivacs before they drop their load and storm whatever does come out.

Scenario 2: You See A Marauder

This is mostly from one gas from the Terran, and it can be a possibility that he’s going for a stim timing. Your timing here is at around 6:40 to 7 minutes, wherein you can macro up units and have an army better than the Terrans at this point. The only real worry here is if he gets a bunker down, wherein you’ll need more stuff to kill them off. That’s when you should have a Robotics Facility for making some Immortals to bust them down.

You can also just sit back and get your upgrades though, but you can take the chance to attack if it presents itself.

Scenario 3: Terran Does Not Expand And You Suspect A 1/1/1

This is perhaps what you will have to be careful about. Your mineral line is susceptible to Banshees and Hellions, so you should have Observers out and have Stalkers out to fend off the air units, while the rest of your forces can kill off anything on the ground.

If he does a 2-port Banshee all-in, then you can go Forge and Stargate to fend them off with Cannons and Phoenixes. You can then proceed to Colossi tech and push when you have enough.

Here is an Audio Builds video on this very build. For those who don’t know about Audio Builds, you can use this while playing to practice your builds, putting down the buildings as exactly as the video dictates in order to get the timings down.

This second video is a sample VOD of a game with CreatorPrime utilizing the build.
